Medicinal Plants of Southern Africa E01: Introduction to Plant Medicine

Since we, as humans, first evolved in Africa, we probably also first used medicinal plants in Africa. Plants are the historical basis for almost all medicine. That makes African medicinal plants especially important to us as a species! This series is a celebration of some of the medicinal plants in Southern Africa that continue to be used by healers to this day.
This is the introductory episode in the series. In this episode I briefly review the history of medicinal plant use by humans and look at how we have come, in the relatively short time of our existence, to develop such a broad knowledge of medicinal plants and their uses. Subsequent episodes will delve into individual species, looking at both their traditional use and what we know of them from a contemporary scientific perspective.

This will be great, looking forward to this series. I like how you include the more spiritual side as well as a source of plant knowledge. I think a lot of food and medicine is instinctual, the information is in our DNA and cells, passed down for generations. There is a lot of room for plant communication and trial and error though.

Always make me smile such a character. huge wealth of knowledge. exciting getting all this info. really looking forward to this series something I wish I had done .... natural medicine. today's medicine has gone off course a money making racket sadly .... Cant agree with the evolutionary idea or trail and error all though yes there if course was some of that ... but absolutely medicine is steeped in spiritual forces some good some bad. Pharmacia has origins in occult witchcraft practices and forbidden knowledge being given in exchange. I certainly know very little of natural residues and plant medicine but my medicine cupboard is pretty bare but pantry full of the things I turn to. Looking forward to this thank you
