How to defeat the Mongol hordes when they invade in Medieval Total War 2: preparation, strategy, and battlefield tactics. Mongols are feared because they have so many good cavalry, most of which can shoot, so they can either charge you or shoot you to death. All their infantry can shoot, and they don't run away until their general dies. They have high dread generals with very good command abilities and units with a lot of experience. They don't require any money to keep them in the field. You can defeat them on the battlefield or by using an assassin (a very good one, there's not much chance). To defeat them on the battlefield, meet them in a hilly area, on a bridge, or in a settlement. You'll need to prepare the settlements between Acre and Baghdad with extra fortifications and recruiting facilities. You should build lookout posts or forts between Edessa and Baghdad. You'll need four armies, each lead by a general with a good number of command stars and high chivalry levels. You'll need some good long-range troops such as longbowmen or crossbowmen - Englsh long bows, Jannisarries or Genoese Crossbowmen. You will need a few light horse, such as Turcopoles, Mounted Sergeants, or Jinnettes. You will need a lot of spearmen and knights. A few artillery and devices such as a Grand Cross or Carroccio will round off each army. In battle, you will need at least five long range shooting units per army, placed in front, at the top of a hill. You wait for the Mongols to attack you, then shoot them to bits while charging from the flanks with your cavalry and holding back any Mongol charges with your spearmen.
