This medieval carol is here given a spirited rendition by the Choir of Clare College Cambridge. In Daryl Runswick's arrangement, under Geoffrey Simon's direction, the choir is accompanied by a small cello ensemble, a descant recorder and a medieval tabor (drum). The word "arrangement" should be emphasized, as this version is not intended to represent how this piece was played and sung all those centuries ago! (From Cala Records CACDS4115 'A Cello Christmas' with all due acknowledgements.) ... I've been fluent in "real" classical latin for 59 years - but every performance I have ever heard of this little thing by anybody has used the same pronunciation as Steeleye Span - including Cambridge's Claire College Choir waxing Gregorian! So that's how i perform it! Lord and the souls of the original Gregorians know how this was originally pronounced. Almost certainly NOT in Julius Caesar's or even Constantine's Latin! Lighten UP, classicist zealots! This song is gorgeous! Enjoy! or quietly steal away!

A Catholic hymn sang in Latin, the language of the church. "Mist takes the morning path to wreath the willows-Rejoice, rejoice-small birds sing as the early rising monk takes to his sandals-Christ is born of the Virgin Mary-cloistered, the Benedictine dawn threads timelessly the needles eye". The Benedictines are a monastic Catholic order of monks still today.

@@AMG-kw7kt - I don't think either version (this or Steeleye Span's) could be considered authentic. But we'll never know for sure HOW it was actually sung in medieval times. It was probably performed as a 'Gregorian' style chant. Interestingly, celebratory chants and such were, in earlier times, generally performed in a minor key. Whereas nowadays we associate a minor key with sadness, not celebration. Think 'A Coventry Carol' for instance. Nowadays it's always arranged in the minor key. But that was probably not the case in Tudor times.

I agree that no version is more authentic than any other. However, one can have preferences, and I prefer this to the Steeleye Span version, since it is cheerful, unlike their version which strikes me as being rather melancholy. The Kings Singers version is also worth hearing.
