Not going to lie, even in modern combat, with just a vest, a helmet, and your gear (water, ammo, etc.), Judo makes a lot of sense. I say this as a soldier who has done Judo, Folkstyle/Catch Wrestling and BJJ. If I were to create a martial art system for soldiers who wear gear, it would be Judo and Boxing, plus weapons retention. Wearing gear and utility uniforms (boots, load bearing equipment, etc.) forces you to be upright and absolutely kills your mobility. Most of the rides and fancy guard work I learned in wrestling and BJJ are so much harder in gear. Furthermore, some of the wrestling takedowns I favored (swing single, fireman's carry, ankle pick) are so much harder when you have something that affects your thoracic mobility (chest rig). I'd never attempt a low single on someone who has a weapon. That leaves a risky high-C and blast double - which if you fail... might have cost you your life. Instead, I think I could get most of the Judo I like to work (Ashi Waza (sweeps, trips, reaps), Harai Goshi, O Soto Gari, and Uchi Mata). I can do them all upright, while deploying most of my other offensive tools and the risk of failure isn't nearly as great.

Man there needs to be a push for this mainstream In the US 💯💯 someone contact Dana White to start UFC: Armored Combat. Plus more publicity and eyes means more money which means higher quality events both small and big(for example outdoors like this could have high tier bands, feasts, other competitions including archery wrestling maybe jousting? To high quality stadium UFC style pay per view style matchs) the best fighters wont just be good techniquilly, they will also be fighters who can effectively implement showmanship and choreoghaphy level moves to entertain crowds(may not get you a point but looks flashy and good, as long as you dont LOSE a point) who will get sponsors, more fights, etc.

But back when I first started, BJJ was almost double the price of Muay Thai classes (probably in part because the UFC popularized both sports, but the Gracie family had famous gyms in the US way before Muay Thai gained the reputation it has now). Long story short, a gym being run by a well-known practitioner of the art will probably be able to charge substantially more than a gym owned by someone who hasn't made a name for themselves in combat sports.

@@ChurchWorshipandvideo Realistically, about $2500-3000 for a full kit of armor. Most people start training with a local team and slowly acquire or get used stuff first. The nice thing about this hobby is once you have it that's all you need. Most events are free or very low cost to participate in. Some fights even pay small amounts to fighters. But that's the beauty about competition, isn't it? As long as there's a winner and a loser, people will train, they will develop strategies. So whenever you watch a sport at a high level, even if it looks chaotic, that just means that you don't yet get it.
@7dayspking
@7dayspking 4 ай бұрын
This isn't necessarily high level. Buhurt, that I understand, isn't in a place where people can compete professionally as their career. By that I mean anywhere in the world, it's definitely not a professional sport in the west. They did have 'M1 medieval knight fights' and armoured 'pro fights, I dunno if they're still around. 1v1, full contact matches with a similar format to kickboxing. I don't think anyone was getting paid enough in that to do it full time either though.

@@Benw8888 well real anti armor weapons were not used in tournaments back in the day also, the nobility was not trying to end each other, even on a real battle field they would try to capture each other for ransom. Mowing down poorly armored common folks was what knights were really about most of history. One of the most amusing tidbits, European nobility really got mad at the Swiss because they did not try to capture knights in war they flat out ended them, the cowardly nobility (aka Knights) just stopped messing with the Swiss and went back to fighting other nations that played by the 'rules' of mowing down poorly armored commoners only. They even made laws to make weapons very good vs armor illegal in warfare example was crossbows were not to be used vs other Christians for centuries. They were used however vs muslims etc.

They could make it that light because they knew how to shape the armor to keep it away from the body to absorb impact and deflect blows. This armor needs to be extra thick and heavy because it doesn't do that.

There's a lot of details about tournaments in actual history that are far more complicated than the folks you asked said, but I appreciate it can be hard to get stuff across when asked in a middle of an event and when you later have to edit it out to make a fun piece of content to consume. Also the modern 'medieval combat' scene (be it IMCF,BoN or ACL etc.) is a modern combat sport that has a lot of similarities to some forms of historical tournaments, it's not a direct continuation. It's absolutely great stuff though and I'm really happy to see it featured on your channel(hope you do a similar video of a hema tournament though :D ) Their weapons and armor are also of differing levels of historical accuracy for the modern game for purposes of safety and longterm durability. However I dont doubt if you transported a knight from the 14th,15th or 16th century that they'd complain about the changes to the armor for the purposes of a tournament(and we know that even in period there were disagreements on what exact get up would be best for war and in what context etc.). If you look up 'The Art of the Game: Hastiludes and Chivalric Competition in the Late Medieval Period' you can find a great lecture on historical tournaments done by Adam Franti(on the lansing longsword youtube channel) that goes into a fair bit of detail about these historical events. He also lists a number of resources for further reading and research for anyone interested.

Cool video! We had some Aussies make the trip out for this last year I think. Would be awesome to see you do some Harnishfechten, which is more the sort of armoured combat you'd do in a life or death situation rather than a tournament.

Try Belegarth next, granted they are foam fighters, but as someone that has done both armored combat and HEMA fencing. I was surprised by how much of a martial art it's developed into and there are a lot of misconceptions about it.

Well i think this is pretty far from medieval combat. I see nobody daggering each other in the face. This is just some MMA in Armour but has not much to do with medieval combat imo. For example you see often how these competitors leg kick each other in a martial arts way. Makes no sense also.

Three points on the ground and you're out? Heavy opponents? This sounds like the western-medieval version of sumo...but more team based. Could you get a couple of your sumo buddies together, armor them up and be an effective team? Would make for some great footage. Also team sumo might be an interesting variation on regular sumo

I used to live in a city that does an anual iron age (viking) festival, and the last year I watched the reenactment melee, an Australian reenactor got one of her fingers chopped off between an oponents blade and her own shield rim. Fortunately, the finger was found on the ground almost immediately and was in good condition to be cleaned and reattatched at the local hospital less than an hour later. Iirc, she was back to participate in the melee the very next year and told the local news paper that the finger had healed without complications and her biggest frustration had been that the injury had prevented her from fully enjoying the rest of her plans after the melee on the year of the injury. The city hospital is 3min by car from the site of the melee and there's always ER nurses and an ambulance on standby at the event site for these kinds of mishaps. And in case of more serious injuries, there are two major hospitals also involved in high end medical research less than a 30min drive away in two of the three closest bigger cities.

Being struck by a (blunt) sword when in full armor doesn't seem that scary. What I'm concerned about more are those axes/hammers some of them have. That must be all that more painful

These people aren't just strong they have alot of stamina to fight in that full armor. You fought for a little wile with that one dude and were already breathing heavy. Just think of how strong and in shape real medieval soldiers were to fight for days wearing full iron armor.

I've been doing Muay Thai for years, and I had a friend who was heavily into buhurt. He tried to invite me into the sport. All I could think was how much more crazy it is. It's not even the armored weapons combat part. But the same issue I have with American football. It's all the tackles you take from blind angles. In orthodox combat sports. It's one on one. And ideally you are always facing your opponent. But with multiple opponents you can't face all at once. And to me that was the biggest risk.

Wish you could have seen Simon Rohrich there, who is the reason why all the helmets have the strap on the back of the helm to ensure they don't come off the head. He took an axe to the skull after his helm came off but was fine afterwards coming out of surgery to repair his fractured skull.
