I love the point both Dr. Capwell and Mr. Easton make about the virtue of armor users contributing to the history discipline. It reminds me of the origins of historical study of warfare, where originally historians didn't see it as their job to study warfare as a discipline, and instead left it to the officer class within militaries because it was thought that only a military expert could understand the accounts of ancient warfare. But military people didn't necessarily appreciate the nature of historical sources, unreliability and contextual reading that is so important in academic history departments. It was only when there was a marriage of academic historians and contemporary military experts that we saw the rise of warfare as a rigorous area of research.

German person here. For US citizens may be unbelieveable is the situation in my homeregion. Why? May be 30 km/ 20 miles away was fortified border between Roman Empire and ,Germania Magna', you can still see some relicts of border wall. May be 15 km/ 10 miles away are relicts of celtic oppidum ,Heidengraben', ramparts, still an obstacle for tanks. Relicts of lots of medieval castles, some build on locations at clifflike northern end of ,Swabian Alb' plateau, ruins of two Renaissance fortresses, relicts of town fortifications, from former ,Imperial Town' to small ,rural town'. Lots of old civilian ,timberwood' buildings, churches , but also relicts of ,Natter' rocket plane starting plattforms, relicts of a ,glider lift' from the time of a Charlie Chaplin lookalike, all inside a circle of 60km/ 40 miles diameter.

Although I will certainly be trying to get a physical copy when I can, I hope Toby will be releasing a digital copy someday. More portable, easier to access, and as silly as it sounds, use. There are some use issues for those of us with physical ailments, just easier to read an iPad than a whopping great book. Also don't need to worry about spilling tea on it, or it being chewed on by a ferocious parrot, as much.

It's so interesting that there are no known verifiable examples of English-made armor from this period. Is there any potential reason for this? Was there a habit or policy of recycling steel in England that would have consumed domestically produced (and thus less expensive) armor at higher rates than imported armor? This seems like an interesting question in itself!

I think a possible variable is that was more rare and not "mass produced" and exported because it was designed primarily for foot combat instead of mounted, which was quite unique to England. So I suppose there was not the supply and demand which means less made and less to survive.

@@sirwi11iam Indeed, that sounds like a very plausible contributing factor. If it was an order of magnitude less common at the time we'd certainly see far fewer surviving examples. But the fact that they are so incredibly rare makes me wonder. I wonder if any culturally specific habits contribute to it as well E.g. were people buried in armor in England in those days? Did they simply not value domestically made armor or was it considered so superior that it was constantly remanufactured and reused in bits and pieces? I don't know if any of that is true but I think it would be quite interesting to understand where it all went.

Concur on the e-copy... I downsized into retirement, and only have about 30 feet of shelf space, mostly stuff I still use for "work". I would hate for this stuff to end up boxed in the attic, or worse, end up in a thrift shop when I move on. (Willing to pay a good chunk for them too--)

I hope there is more discussion of French and Spanish armor, these were powerful Christian European Kingdoms there, and therefore beautiful and expensive armor being worn there.

​@nicholasricardo8443 France was also the most populace Kingdom of the period, even with somewhat smaller borders than modern France. It's fascinating to me looking at French effigies of the early 15th century and seeing the subtle differences. From 1400-1420 (I only use this distinction because that's the period I looked at). You see the majority of effigies without any helmets. One or two examples towards the end of the period had helmets depicted separately. And there were small number that did have helmets on their heads. So it's interesting to contrast artistic styles of the period in different locations. I did see one or two very interesting harnesses that seemed to differ from a lot of the others. So I think it's definitely a subject that a lot could be written about.

I got the opposite advice on my PhD subject. After finishing my master's I was so tired of its subject, and I was talking about it with a friend/colleague and she said "anything you work on for four years with the pressure of a PhD is something you'll get tired about, so choose something you don't love". I didn't follow it, but I did choose something that I didn't love because I love neuro but I wanted something that would be easier to get a job outside academia, because I didn't want to move to another city. But it's not good advice, anyway. A PhD is very different from a master's; I basically didn't choose a theme for my master's and it wasn't a problem, 2 years go by really quickly, but for my PhD, I found myself questioning whether I really wanted to study that, many times. And I did change my theme probably four times (and ended up on the second theme). So yeah, choose something that you love and about which you don't mind spending the next four years reading at least one article each day. And most importantly: do everything as if you didn't have a sponsor. Many of them feel that they are not there to help you do it, they are there to check your work, but they won't tell you that.

Great video, Matt! Love your interview videos, especially with Dr. Capwell. Is there any hope of his books eventually becoming available electronically? I'd love to get a copy of all three, but I don't currently have space for large, expensive books that I'd want to keep in as good condition as possible for longevity. I've already got ~1500 books that are a massive pain to own and about triple that amount in digital books that fit on my hard drive. A digital copy would be a welcome option and would, if he cares about that, ensure it would remain available for purchase for decades to come.

Question as a KZbinr. How did you get Dr. Capwells audio so clearly ? It doesnt look like he has his own lavelier Mic? Is it your lavelier Mic? Do you have a directional mic (dont know the proper english term) Your audio is always good by the way. I recently had quite some problems in an interview in a room with suboptimal acustics with a non lavelier mic approach :) Very interesting Video.

I know it’s a huge ask for Dr Capwell but a book from his studies with Tod and putting that information that they get from the longbow tests into a book on Azingcourt and the effects of the longbow and how important it actually was to the English army would be interesting that would certainly be a huge help to anyone studying the Hundred Years’ War period and explaining why the English won or even worse why the French lost we know the archers had an effect but he really could with this study with Tod prove how much of an effect on the battlefield the Longbow actually had

I wonder if advancements in armor and arms coincided with the wars. As in greater changes during or right after war time and a lull between wars? Or was the down time used to do a lot of experimentation which would lead to numerous changes and variety? Were styles and types thrown out after a war which would either lead to a few being prevalent afterwards and used primarily afterwards for a time or more inovation afterwards?

Has Dr Capwell seen the wall painting from Coventry Charterhouse? It's a partial early 15th century crucifixion scene that features 2 armoured figures. I don't think it has been very well documented so far, as it was only rediscovered fairly recently and isn't normally open to the public. A local charity has been trying to restore the building and develop it as a tourist attraction for a few years, but they've only met with limited success and the building (a former Carthusian monastery) is on the Heritage at Risk register due to a leaky roof. The armoured figures representing the Roman soldiers persecuting Jesus are depicted in a 15th century style and show some details of the armour, as well as clothing worn with it and associated weapons, so might be of interest to him if he's not already seen them (or anyone else with an interest in medieval arms and armour, for that matter). There are also some later, 16th century wall paintings in the same building, dating from its period as an elite residence following the dissolution of the monasteries, which include a pretty detailed portrayal of a 16th century soldier with a sword and shield (possibly anachronistic for the period). Anyway, it's a really great site that could really use more attention, academic and public alike.
