In the time periods depicted in this video the cultures living in Scandinavia and those living in England had far more similarities than differences and in many cases were actually the exact same people. we are going to be looking at the same colors, same linens and similar styles and patterns. There will not be furs or any of that other sillyness you see in hollywood. If you are thinking about traditional bunad that was not invented until the 18th/19th century.
@carrieschutrick85504 жыл бұрын
And if "Vikings" were "people living in Scandinavia during the High Middle Ages", that would mean something. They weren't, and it doesn't. The end of anything that could be referred to as Vikings was the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 - ca. 300 years before the sources for this video. I'm not going to google it for you because I don't need to; even the most cursory search will give you plenty of references.

i've been really enjoying watching your capsule wardrobe design process! in this one, i wonder if you might have had some fun playing a bit with mixing in medieval menswear, so you'd have tunic and hose options (i love a leggings and dress outfit for any season.) I would have loved to have at least one longer dress too. and maybe the shift could have more modern use as a sundress or beach cover-up? you give a lot of good ideas to play with. thanks for the inspiration!

I LOVE these history bounding capsule wardrobe videos! I like the idea of history bounding but thought I could never pull it off because it seemed to impractical for me. Why put all that time and money into an outfit I love but could never wear to work, where I spend the greatest part of every weekday? Visually seeing you create these capsules has made me realise I could actually pull off history bounding. Please keep these videos coming!

I'd love to see your takes on Viking clothing -- Viking as in historic early Norse, rather than the Viking TV show.
@charischannah4 жыл бұрын
You could probably layer a jumper dress or sleeveless dress with narrow straps over a t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt, or over a long-sleeved, tightly fitting dress to get the look. Plus lots of embroidery or woven trim and jewelry to complete the outfit.
@ananda10010014 жыл бұрын
@@charischannah I've made a couple of mostly-historic early Norse outfits for myself. I've done a bunch of research on early Norse clothing, so I'd skip the embroidery. I just haven't found enough examples of it used *on clothing* in a decorative way, which makes the time and work to do embroidery so very not worth it for me. Aside from the serk & smokkr, there's also the women's coat that could be worked in. And then to really historybound it, rather than staying with historical accuracy, you could mix and match with men's clothing elements.
@ragnkja3 жыл бұрын
@@ananda1001001 In the following centuries in Norway, trim, whether woven, pinked, embroidered or some other technique, was often made separately and then sewn to the garment. This does make sense from an economical standpoint, since the garment and trim don’t necessarily wear out at the same rate, so if the trim wears out first it’s replaceable and if the garment wears out first the trim can be reused. Based on a bog body that is either late pre-Christian Norse or Sámi (mid-11th century), it seems likely that this would have been the case in the Viking age as well.

I've got to say that I have found these design videos to be right at the intersection of my niche interests! I'm just starting the process of designing a historybounding wardrobe for myself and abstaining from buying more fast fashion (if you can even call some of the Walmart buys fashion), so the way that you have approached garment versatility and color scheme through drawings really gets me fired up to tackle my own set. Excited to watch more of your worldbuilding videos as well since I am also worldbuilding a setting for D&D.

I like to see viking next. What a good idea with detatchable sleeves! I have to make some! My medieval wardrobe (yes, I have one for medieval events and such, it's small, but it exists. Sometimes I toss around the idea of wearing some of it in every day life, but I have a hard time pairing it with other things.) consist mostly of long sleeved underdresses and overdresses without sleeves, and that´s how I combine it. But detatchable sleeves would give me much more options, but take a really small amount of fabric to make.
@MariahPattie4 жыл бұрын
Yes! The only thing I might amend in real life, if the sleeves were particularly heavy, I might try to figure out how to attach them from something like a Lengberg bra strap, something tight enough to keep it from drooping off the shoulder.
@ragnkja3 жыл бұрын
Medieval detachable sleeves were typically either pinned on or tied on with points, or maybe even both. The most important thing is that at least by the end of the period, it was definitely something that people did.
@ragnkja3 жыл бұрын
Tie-on or pin-on sleeves were definitely a thing by the end of the medieval period, and people did use them to add variety to their wardrobe. When open-skirted (over-)gowns became fashionable, some also added “false kirtle fronts” to get even more variety without having to make a whole new kirtle.

I would include tunic tops with flowing sleeves, paired with leggings. You could get away with bolder, more "medieval" type patterns, shapes and embroidery in a top paired with modern leggings, if they're black. That's sort of what they did in the "Hunger Games" movies for the Capital people - very bright colors and strong shapes softened by black.
@fabricdragon3 жыл бұрын
as far as your "longer " question.... in a very old book on clothing (I haven't a thing to wear by Judith Keith) the author suggests the idea of using snaps to add skirt length or treatments. since you are adding detachable sleeves, why not add detachable extra length?
@tammyt34344 жыл бұрын

This is excellent! I just stumbled across this video and got really excited. I've been trying to design some modern menswear pieces based on medieval fashion, and so far all I've got that really works without feeling TOO costumey is essentially a hoodie that has the dagged shoulder mantle and a hood that has the liripipe tail. the sleeve thing is super cool. A dream I've had for a while is to purge my wardrobe to 5-6 shirts, not counting vests. Then I would rip out all the shoulder seams and install snaps or buttons instead, so that any sleeve could be matched with any shirt. So many shirts these days are super boring. detachable sleeves would just liven them up that extra bit, to take an outfit from okay to awesome.

I can't draft or sew, but I'm obsessed with the idea of a small number of adjustable-sized clothing items. I like that historical fashion was by-and-large practical and meant for years of use. I'm a little sad that I can seemingly only find dresses and womenswear that is made to be adjustable. While I'm not opposed to wearing dresses, I'd like some stuff that won't get me funny looks if a guy wore it. ... Maybe that's a little much to ask, seeing as most history bounding stuff is kind of unique.

This video has just got yourself a new subscriber. I love it all. I think one way to make the palette work better would have been too change the shade of the green to one that lies on the blue-r end of the spectrum. I feel that it was the olive-y shade against the grayish- blue that was just not working. If the green had a bit more of a blue- ish hue to it, closer to an emerald green, or maybe a grayish green colour, it might have looked better. But that's coming from a person who only looks good in green if it's a bluish green. So I might be biased. And I'd probably go for a silver over the golden colour, for the sake reason. Well, that, and I'm allergic to gold. And yellow tones make me look dreadfully jaundiced. So take it all with a grain of salt.
