Historybounding: The practice of incorporating various degrees of historical inspiration into a modern wardrobe. I realize I was using the terms "viking", "norse", and "nordic" interchangeably, and if that's inaccurate I'm sure you'll let me know.
Ok so I probably should have gone into more detail about the shoemaking process. But I don't actually know how to make shoes, I just watched a few videos on the subject last year and I was taking my best guess at copying how the actual professionals put together the soles. It was kind of an impulsive, experimental thing, and I didn't think they would actually turn out well. So apologies, and if I make another pair in the future I will do a more in-depth tutorial.

You could totally make a regency modern wardrobe that has both masculine and feminine fashion, because I think the masculine fashion would translate to women clothing quite well (the coats, shirts, etc) 😍

I NEED THOSE SHOES! The whole capsule is glorious, but those shoes! Due to medical problems, the only actual ‘shoes’ I can currently wear are horrible ballerina style flats - absolutely nothing with structured sides or uppers. Now I need to research those shoes/boots, and make myself a pair along with the felt liner to make them into boots for the winter. Amazing!

Since I started watching your videos I've become really interested in historical clothing and designing clothes for my worldbuiling projects. I recently bought a book called "Viking Dress Code" by Kamil Rabiega, which has helped me a lot with my designs. It shows a lot of reconstructions of scandinavian clothing from the 8th to 11th century, as well as fotos of surviving garments, and it goes into detail about their construction. Just as a little recommendation for anyone interested in viking fashion.

I'd wear it all! I think the skirt could be a little fuller, more a-line and less pencil.

That's it, that's what I didn't like. I imagined the skirt fuller, then I drew it narrow to fit beneath the other layers and it looks slim 🤷‍♀️

My first thought was that I would wear viking inspired clothes without the modernasiations, but it turned out better than I expected. You are really good at picking out the features that makes the feel. Also love the shoe-making! This gave me many ideas. In my head, I really want to wear both viking and medieval styles as they are in modern day. But in reality, I will not do it. I actually need thoes modernatiations to be able to use them in everyday life.

I’m so in lOVE with your channel right now... Your capsule wardrobe videos are absolutely stellar, fantastic explanations of how to create unique and versatile pieces and I just 😭 I adore how you think like a worldbuilder when designing, rather than focusing on pure ~aesthetic~ you take function and practicality into real consideration, drawing upon the inspirations for answers to problems. 💗💗💗 (also eee!! the apron top is fantASTIC, i’ll have to make something like it for myself!)

Keep up the good work. I have always been a rebel when it came to clothing. My parents were constantly on my back to "dress normal" and would stress continuously about "what people would think". Finally, in my thirties, I decided I could dress how I wanted and sod what people thought. Being a part offirst a re enactment group, then a LARP community have given me sooooo much leverage to take my wardrobe where I want. I now encourage my grown children to do the same, and make garments for my grandchildren. I am pleased to see they dress how they feel, not always how convention suggests. Well done.

It seems like a lot of you know each other(?) maybe (?) because I just watched an Abby Cox video where she lists a bunch of the same people I watch.... and I would so love to be in a crafting circle with all of you. You just gave me an idea! I have a pair of those - we call them "Bundschuhe", "drawstring shoes" - that got ruined due to a heavy rain on a medieval festival after which they were not dried properly. They molded and deteriorated in the sole area. I killed the mold with chlorine, but the sole is still damaged. I might make new soles for them and sandwich the damaged area between a thinner inner layer and the sturdy outer sole. I happen to have sole leather, because I once planned on making my own medieval shoes, but then ended up buying a pair.

So I finally got around to watching this. I do medieval reenactment with an emphasis on Norse/Viking. I've been needing to update my work wardrobe and the red dress style is so going into my rotation (as soon as I have a chance to get to making it.) and you've inspired me to up my game on the skirts I'm going to make. I'm going to adding trim/embroidery to some of them.

You made me realise what I needed in my life. Viking-style embroidery on modern clothing. Oh gosh, yes. Though it may prove a bit difficult to carry out because I can't draw a simple clear line in the right direction for the life of me, which is also why I watched the process of you drawing the fur with rising awe and my jaw totally dropped to the floor at the end result. This is magic. And then you actually made shoes too :O I'm so glad you made this video! I happen to have some nerdy knowledge of the period and place in question, and I'm gonna share because this is what one does with nerdy knowledge, and maybe it's even going to be of use to somebody ;) This tablet-woven band with a braid pattern you used on the neckline edge of the red dress is actually based on a find from Birka, IIRC, although the original one was brocaded with gold (or silver?) wire, hence it survived. The pattern on the trim you added to the green apron dress is called kivrim or 'running dog' and is traced to... 19th c. Turkich or otherwise Arabic carpets ^^" But it's a beautiful pattern nonetheless and fitting for Viking-inspired clothes. The deer antler pattern is not historical, and the previous applies to it as well in my opinion. On an unrelated note, check out this blog post on a full reconstruction/interpretation of one grave from Birka, I think its super interesting: cheyenneolander.blog/2020/06/01/an-attempt-at-recreating-grave-507-from-birka (its not my blog, not my work, this is not an ad)

@Celebrinthal

Coming back to this thread because as I was pondering over the idea of adding tablet-woven trims to modern clothes, I realised one important thing. Tablet weaving produces very thick and sturdy bands (as for every thread you see on the outside there are 3 more hidden beneath + weft), and therefore would be very cumbersome to use. There is, however, a technique called missed hole in which you use only two threads per tablet (and it's period-accurate - apparently the Vikings didn't like their trims too bulky either ;) ) But then there is still the problem of it very possibly behaving differently than the rest of the garment (shrinking)... I think faking it by replicating the patterns with embroidery on a regular contrasting cloth trim would be the way to go about it in modern clothing. P.S. I think you did quite solid research for this video, after all nobody can be an expert on everything :)

I really love these videos. In case you are looking for ideas for future videos, I would be really interested in your take on how to modernize outfits from the 17th century and restoration period. They are so outlandishly lavish, but there are some really interesting silhouettes, especially in the women's riding habits. It is also a period I don't see a lot of on youtube, so it would be a great discovery.

So much love for this video!!! This was beautiful work. I do hope you don’t feel pressured by popular demand to do men’s clothing if that doesn’t interest you - if so, someone else will just have to be inspired by your work to do men’s capsules instead 😜 Also, as someone who basically lives in photoshop and never got past the basics of illustrator, I was in awe of the ease you did that fur collar with! Ok, I spent an age wondering wth you were doing, saw the end result and had all the intelligent thought of ‘!!!!’. But. I have been impressed with your skill since I started watching and have enjoyed the screen share, but this was a new level. About the skirt you were unsure of, I think that visually the pattern of the embroidery is too low on the left instead of appearing to curve around the hem, which may be part of what is putting you off. And the shoes! Just. ❤️. I know this video was some 20 mins long, but it felt like I’d been sitting down watching for just two. Every moment was enjoyable. Thank you for sharing.

As a person that work a lot in leather, I must say you made a good job with the shoes (I made like a ton of the same design btw. And wear the design for summer use accually instead of sandals). Waxed linnen thread is prefered, how ever I would have used a slightly thicker thread than the one you where using. Aftet glueing it is allso a good idea to put the sole under preassure for a few hours, make them last longer. (I use barbell weights to preassure mine)

You know this is actually something I might wear more everyday. It's very appealing to me even if I am a more modern fashion gal daily, but occasionally dawn Renaissance Garb during the summer. I kinda wanted a weird blend of the two with a bit more edge. And maybe what I needed was the ancient feel and heritage from my own ancestral family in my wardrobe. Like I have the Renaissance pieces already I do now sometimes dawn my shift to sleep in but what's needed is blending I think for the future. Take the Past & the Now and for the Future.

I think I'm going to. I love the way this pair turned out, but I know it'll be better a second time around.

As a guy viewer, I don’t particularly care if you choose not to cover men’s fashion as much. I subscribed and watch your content because I enjoy what you make, and if what you like making is mainly women’s fashion-oriented, I still like it. Just because it’s not something that applies to me doesn’t mean I can’t learn and feel inspired by it.

I dont know if its an era you're at all interested in, but would you consider a mid-late 18th century capsule wardrobe? I'm seriously loving this series ☺ I can feel my creativity and will to Create! being restored 😁 (p.s. I know this video is like a month old at this point but I felt it was a bit more relevent to the topic to comment here 😅)

I love this whole look and am tempted to make parts of it especially those shoes! I agree the red skirt does look a bit plain even with that fantastic embroidery. Might it look better if it was fuller, so the fabric could flow and fold?

Very cool designs. Interesting to watch your process. Now you should make at least a couple of those pieces and try them out in real life!

@@MariahPattie From some of the felted slippers I've seen here and there, one way would be to knit wool socks at a much larger size, then felt them. (Memory is trying to tell me the felting could be done in a washing machine, but I'm not sure if I trust it.

@@PhoenyxAshe; you can felt in a washing machine, just use hot water. My SIL felted a woollen nappy cover by accident that way.
