Having recently played Rome 1 and Med 2 back to back, I find your review surprising because I had the exact opposite opinion. Population mechanics was simplified because Rome 1 couldn't deal with eventual uprising in all of your settlement. Rome 1's economy was too bountiful that every turn forced you to build something in every settlement. Unit recruitment system prevents you from filling an army with elite units only and to lesser tedium as well. Overall I think med 2 greatly reduces unnecessary time you spend on the campaign map while refining most of the shortcomings in Rome 1. The only thing R1 has going for itself to me is the speech and facton diversity.

Rome can't hold a candle to Medieval 2. This is the best in the series. Then empire

Empire is my favorite by far. Just love it. Get the mod Imperial Splendor. It's fantastic. Really improves the naval system and adds tons of unique ships.

Nah. It was downhill from Medieval 2 after CA got too big for their boots. I've tried most of the others and I still go back to Rome and Medieval 2. They just have character.

@antonycharnock2993 actually you should play warhammer 3. It's incredible ngl

The political and religious aspect seems really cool! That's an interesting mechanic that makes the management seem fun. I'd probably skip this one though and play something more fully baked. Maybe if it is cheap though it could be interesting. Looking forward to seeing reviews of later entries to the series! Thanks for the review!

Medieval 2 is the definition of vanilla. It removed some of the title functions from the first medieval. It staryed away from representing medieval society with cut and paste recruitment system, and horrible mercenary pool. Family tree dynamics limited, and fuedalism was simplified into the core of the game, rather than a building block to forge your faction through time. They need a community based function to interact with the populace as the ruling class. It just doesnt really exist in the game as a tool, justba means to an end. We antcipated and expanded variation of Medieval 2 in terms of campaign mechanics, and indepth world building. Multiple minor adjustments all across the board. Its the battles that seperates this game from others. I dont mind medieval being clunky, now incorpoarte characteristics that explains why untis are clunky. Create a unit tier system that doesnt just impact cost, availability, armour and training. Actually modify the units to fight differently too. Why do peasants and dismounted fuedal knights have the same attack animations? Sword swipe, and shield bash. Shield bash animation doesnt even seeve a pupose, its just a default modifier to make your units more useless in battle. Higher trained units have higher moral sure, but now incorporate other competencies with physical indicators, not lazy stat. sheets. Why do halbeird units cheer instead of fight. I loose 30% of halbeirds to town militia becuase my units are stuck in mocking mode. Wtf. Hold ground and fight!!! Ca really needs to spend time in the lab. Field testing weapon impact, cavalry impact, collision theory. They need data to improve unit performance, cohesion and physics. Theyd rather use expenses to polish the cheapest options.

Which generals speeches were you listening too? Each faction had something to say about whoever they were fighting kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3S1aauMbMuVa9k

I played ME2 when it first came out. I really enjoyed it and consider it to be my 2nd favorite game in the series, Rome being number 1. Empire onwards went down hill for me.

Damn, we held onto that last brain cell for so long just to lose it to medieval. Efficient, yah?

It's impressive how many correct statements one can make and still be entirely wrong, love it

I’m actually not out for blood, so I’d be glad to hear what you thought was so terrible :D
@exactlyloler612 жыл бұрын
@Zeruel132 Nothing was terrible, I just disagree with your last statement. It's a fairly old game with many issues but it's way more engaging than the newer titles. The modding community by itself makes this game superior to most other titles. I really don't think this would be a disappointing entry into the TW genre, mainly because of the mods like Divide and Conquer, Westeros TW and so on.
@Zeruel1322 жыл бұрын
I mean there’s a reason I didn’t compare these to newer games since I haven’t gone through them yet. Also mods for me are something to praise modders for, not the game for. If I did that, Skyrim would automatically be the best video game because of its modding scene. But that’s not what Creative Assembly created. Medieval 2 is what they created and it’s not the job of unpaid fans to raise its qualities.
@exactlyloler612 жыл бұрын
@@Zeruel132 What CA did was create a game that even now is extremely moddable. The newer titles can't do that, this is the Total War equivalent to Skyrim. And I do not quite agree, if the developers grant the fans the ability to improve their game as much as possible, then that's a massive plus on their part. Modding games like warhammer 1-3 is a huge pain in the @. Apart from that, medieval 2s fighting is more entertaining than that of the newer titles, even with worse graphics, because the animations actually influence the course of battle and units actually have individual health points and hit boxes, unlike the newer titles where they simply drop dead, even if the enemy arrows don't hit or simply because the unit halt dropped down. M2 feels more realistic.
@Zeruel1322 жыл бұрын
But you see what I mean right? I never looked into the future to see what you might dislike. I reviewed Medieval 2, not the future entirety of the Total War franchise. I also wasn’t the one to say that everything I said was incorrect. I also am not saying that the game’s good because you can basically make it not be Medieval 2. And I also didn’t made sure to not call people wrong because something gives you a specific “feel”. I appreciate the feedback though. I’ll try to not be right and wrong simultaneously again.

I think Rome & Medieval 2 are two of the best strategy games ever. I've played it from 2004 with thousands of hours of gameplay. I think the janky movements in Med 2 are intentional especially with cavalry. It gives a more realistic feel. Look at those beautiful combat animations then compare them to the new games. It just feels more "solid"?
@Cothfotmeoo2 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah, the total war games were a bit meh until Warhammer came out. XD Maybe there were a couple other good ones but none that I'd just randomly feel like playing again. Well played.

Thank you! :D I will say, Rome was a very memorable experience, though I've heard that Rome 2 will be messy, so I guess the second one won't recapture what 1 had.
