Medieval 2 is the definition of vanilla. It removed some of the title functions from the first medieval. It staryed away from representing medieval society with cut and paste recruitment system, and horrible mercenary pool. Family tree dynamics limited, and fuedalism was simplified into the core of the game, rather than a building block to forge your faction through time. They need a community based function to interact with the populace as the ruling class. It just doesnt really exist in the game as a tool, justba means to an end. We antcipated and expanded variation of Medieval 2 in terms of campaign mechanics, and indepth world building. Multiple minor adjustments all across the board. Its the battles that seperates this game from others. I dont mind medieval being clunky, now incorpoarte characteristics that explains why untis are clunky. Create a unit tier system that doesnt just impact cost, availability, armour and training. Actually modify the units to fight differently too. Why do peasants and dismounted fuedal knights have the same attack animations? Sword swipe, and shield bash. Shield bash animation doesnt even seeve a pupose, its just a default modifier to make your units more useless in battle. Higher trained units have higher moral sure, but now incorporate other competencies with physical indicators, not lazy stat. sheets. Why do halbeird units cheer instead of fight. I loose 30% of halbeirds to town militia becuase my units are stuck in mocking mode. Wtf. Hold ground and fight!!! Ca really needs to spend time in the lab. Field testing weapon impact, cavalry impact, collision theory. They need data to improve unit performance, cohesion and physics. Theyd rather use expenses to polish the cheapest options.

Having recently played Rome 1 and Med 2 back to back, I find your review surprising because I had the exact opposite opinion. Population mechanics was simplified because Rome 1 couldn't deal with eventual uprising in all of your settlement. Rome 1's economy was too bountiful that every turn forced you to build something in every settlement. Unit recruitment system prevents you from filling an army with elite units only and to lesser tedium as well. Overall I think med 2 greatly reduces unnecessary time you spend on the campaign map while refining most of the shortcomings in Rome 1. The only thing R1 has going for itself to me is the speech and facton diversity.

First of all, no flame, nobody should be flamed for stating their opinion. That beeing said, when you make a review, you should be well informed, you should have a mastery or the subject you are reviewing. Otherwise, you are just stating random opinions. This video feels like a first impression, since I didn't understand if he played through Nightmare or Hell so I assume it's just Normal. I would like to see a follow--up review of the game, with the same character when he is lvl 80, finished hell, with an optimised build and self found geae only. That would be interesting.

Not 100% sure but i belive the reason for the spongy bosses is that they act as kind of a lvl check to encourage players to go back and grind a lvl or 2 rather than slog through. Ofc this is not explained as such soo :P. Allso in the end if you did like diablo 2 just for one playthrough i would sugest Titan Quest its a more linear game with larger but static maps, and this game has allso gotten the remaster treatment. It has gotten alot of "modern" expansions and the quality of those is a bit hit and mis, so i would advise you to stop a first play after immortal thrones wich was the original expansion. Allso being a tradition of that era TQ allso has spongy bosses even more so than D2R, so you might end up being forced to go back in that game, but you know its a thing

I will say one thing i do love about diablo 2 is that every item is avalable for all classes. You can in fact make a pure melee sorceress or a sorc with a bow. It realy opens up alot of different avenues on how to play. Yes it can be annoying getting melee stats on a staff but thats how it goes sometimes.

It definitely takes time to realize what D2 really is. I tried to get my buddy to play and he was hyper focused on the story lol. I told him to not even bother paying attention to it until you are in Hell mode. Also an endgame character with GG will give you a completely different experience. The game is really about grinding for gear and runes. Secret Cow level farming, Diablo, Mephisto and Baal runs. For example, my endgame sorc has broken frames and can teleport across any map in seconds and destroy the cow level in just a couple minutes. I also have a “gold find” barbarian build and a “magic find” sorc alt. Once you get certain uniques and rune words you can make some seriously OP builds.

Best part of this comments section is you can tell who is super passionate about this game by the explanations and advice they give, coming from a genuine good place - they just want to share their enthusiasm for the game with someone who’s just getting into it, and it’s overshadowing all the hate (that Llama told people not to do lol). Of course it’s so much easier to troll and hold hate in your heart than to extend with an open heart any expertise you have, in empowering others by spreading your knowledge to drive that same passion. It’s one thing Zeruel himself is phenomenal about in his own community, so the parallel here in reciprocity is even more heart warming. Ok I’ll stop being y’alls auntie 😂 banger review as always lad, I did smash that like button

I agree with a lot of the other comments, playing through normal mode on a single character isn't really enough play time to warrant calling this anything but a first impressions video. I'm actually impressed that you managed to beat normal while going in blind, my first character from almost 20 years ago couldn't even beat duriel in act 2. There are just so many hidden stats and effects in this game that you won't ever figure out unless you're willing to look up outside sources or spend a couple hundred hours in game experimenting. You kind of lucked out by sticking with a single skill tree, a common mistake that new players make is thinking they can do a little bit of everything, and they end up with a really weak character that can't progress, so good instincts there. But at the same time you skipped over some really useful and almost borderline necessary skills that belong to the lightning skill tree, static which basically shaves off enemy health is perfect for bosses, just spamming static really quickly melts them. And the biggest miss which is teleport. It's the only real mobility skill in the game and it's completely broken. I'd love to see you take another shot at this game, and hopefully spent a little more time in the world exploring whatever character you decide to try next.

@@Zeruel132 the ladder in D2 is only competitive for like 0.1% of the player base... the other 99.9% of people just like the fresh journey, the reset in the economy, the feels of progressing and evolving your character, planning a build, and farming to make that build really good.. the struggle in ladder starts makes it really fun, specially to play with friends ^^ it is really fun, and simple... that's what I like the most about D2, it is really simple, and doesn't take people much time to learn everything... and people can play even with low amounts of time.. you can even log before a work meeting and play for 15 minutes and still have a good use of the time... those are things I really like on D2 and in other games I feel players need a lot of time to make something useful out of it

If you wanna give D2 another try I would definitely recommend to start with help of some guide. It would be insanely time consuming if you tried to figure all the staff on your own and you wouldn't be able to do it well anyway for a very long time. Information included in numerous online guides comes from knowledge acquired from years of playing game by countless people. And once you get into it you can start experimenting with build theory crafting if you desired it. It gives you real feeling of satisfaction when you finally acquire needed gear for your well optimized build and suddenly you are able to melt everything in hell chaos sanctuary or secret cow level on players 8 settings in matter of seconds. My first build was javazon and she was at the end absolute killer, but you could for example easily respec your sorceress and play straight nightmare without need to redo normal. People usually run through normal as fast as they can just maybe with short stop at countess to get low tier runes for initial gear set up. Really good items you can get starting from nightmare and some only in hell. D2 is definitely not a game for everyone and there is nothing wrong with not liking it ofc, but not liking it because you quit before you even can really get into it kind of sucks. I think D2 player needs to enjoy pretty steep learning curve at first. And this applies even more to Path of Exile. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you are one of these people then these games are rewarding.

D2,D4 and poe player here. A lot of issues I think you had with this comes down to the fact D2 is a lot harder to pickup than d4. I would say it's probs just learning the game that helps clear up the loot and levelling issue. i.e knowing where to be for exp and drops. I find D2 loot superior since you tend to only get loot every now and then even bad loot is in smaller drops, but when you do get a set etc it's a big win. More rewarding than loot cannons you get desensitised with. Also sorcerer is a hard character, mana is pretty difficult to manage in this game.

It would have been understandable if you went in and played the game and was like, "It just wasn't for me." Cause we D2 is an old game, and it ain't for everyone. However, your "review" is the equivalent of opening a book, reading the table of content, and then assume you know enough about the book to make an assessment. "A time when grinding for level is good enough." Cause D4 has an immersive quest system that sets you on amazing journeys to get exp? It's an ARPG. ALL ARPG is about grinding shit for loots and levels.

UPDATE: I have reached out to MrLlamaSC and he was overall apologetic, offering to even take down the video. Instead we decided on changing the name of the video to be more accurate instead! :) Hey lads, I've finally seen all the backlash here that are coming from the brigade. Yeah man, I came over from Llama’s video to see if people were giving you crap. Sorry to see that’s happening. I think some folks did the classic thing of watching a little bit and formed an opinion before finishing the video. Overall, I enjoyed watching your impression of the game and it helps highlight the problem that DII has; time. Originally you had a walkthrough guide to play the game with that would have explained these things. How stats work, what ‘bonus cold damage’ meant, etc. etc. so the game was constructed with very little information on that stuff since it was viewed as bloat. When the game came out since people had less of an ability to research the game/look stuff up the book was the only reliable way to ‘play the game’ when you couldn’t be on the computer. What that means now is that new players are starting the game with even less information than the seasoned vets did, and sometimes those guys forget their own humble origins. Thanks for providing more content for the DII community!

No, you did not get the best weapon possible in Act 2. No, the game does not barely drop loot. I’m curious how different this would have been if he did understand how it works. Or is it that he still wouldn’t have love it because the instant gratification and low level of skill and difficulty of D4 is really what he wants.

The stats and mechanics that are not only misleading but also a straight lie, for example the breakpoints that make some stats only work at certain thresholds, but also don't really reflect the numbers. For example you hit the 105% faster cast rate breakpoint on a sorceress, does it mean you cast 2 times faster? Nope, 62,5% faster. But at the same time the game doesn't tell the player what to do, or at least didn't until the terror zones were added. That ultimate freedom is waht made the game appealing to me.

I'm here from MrLlamaSC's reaction to this video. I would be interested in seeing an update from you after say... 100 hours or so, trying out the various classes, learning more of the intricacies of the various mechanics, finding better gear that allows for more diverse character builds, Nightmare and Hell difficulties and how they challenge you after more monsters gain immunities to certain damage types, etc. There's a lot more complexity to this game than meets the eye after just a single playthrough of Normal difficulty with 1 of the 7 character classes. Overall, I wouldn't exactly call this a "review" but more of a "first impressions" video. I would greatly encourage you to stick with Diablo II a while longer. Diablo 2 is a game that you need to have played first in the early 2000's when you were 15. Don't get me wrong, it is still to this day a phenomenal game, even without nostalgia, but you need to have had the time and mindset of a 15 year old in the early 2000's when you got into it. You need the free time to play this game extensively, level multiple chars into the 90's to truly see what the game can give you. If you play it for the first time, AFTER having played modern hand-holdy aRPGs as an adult with a job, family and friends, you can't get into it, like back then. It is WAY more complex than you give it credit for, and it is at the same time, a lot harder, but also a lot more forgiving than modern games. You can play almost every build you want to finish the game, as long as it makes at least a little sense (don't put 1 point in every skill, then run around with a crossbow as barbarian). But if you want to play the very endgame and kill the UBER-bosses you need a finely tuned character, specifically built for these bosses, and have the right equipment to do so. But these aren't things you will find by playing the game once. These are only things you know after hundreds of hours of experience. And even then you won't even come close to finding all the items, runes, etc. the game has to offer. There are people that have every Unique item in the game twice or even 3 times, that have never seen some of the most valuable items in the game, because they are magic (blue) items with insane drop-chances, like small charms, JMoD, or perfectly rolled rare (yellow) items that have sold for many thousands of $. You apparently only played the story once, through normal mode, so you haven't even had the chance to find over 2/3s of the items that are possible, and you probably only saw around 0,01% of the items in the game, because you just tried to finish the game instead of building a character specifically designed to go item-hunting. Most players start their first char as a sorc, level it up to around lvl 75, then equip a lot of gear with the stat "chance to find magic item" and then kill some specific bosses or unique monsters over and over again to get items. Other alternatives are doing the same thing with a barbarian, equip gear with "% extra gold" and then kill travincal over and over again to quickly farm gold and gamble thousands of items in the hopes of finding some circlet, amulet or other specific items. Then they use those items to build a char specifically for killing the uber-bosses and only then have you actually played through all the content the game has to offer, which still leaves you with 4 or 5 other classes that you haven't even touched yet, and can play the entire game through with those again, having an entirely different experience each time. There is a reason the game got remastered. It is just so damn good, that people still play it almost 25 years after it got first released.

Diablo 2 is about the gameplay loop, and the combat. everything is designed from the ground up to mesh well with it. what it's not trying to be is a loot treadmill. it doesn't want you to sit and stare at stats and eyeball incremental upgrades. it wants you to feel as though your upgrades are meaningful and there's no meaning without restraint. I think if you think about what Diablo 2 does well, and try to evaluate how it's game systems either intrude or help with that, it would help you see just how focused and coherent the game design is compared to more modern iterations that have gotten way too frantic in their design motives and lost the plot on what makes then good
