I kinda miss the old short arming sword though. Seeing you fence with it against the sidesword, even though you have range disadvantage, yet still managed to create some very effective exchanges is a joy to see

Yeah it was cool but the shorter type XIV is lesser representative of what I want to work ok! Thanks btw!

Arming sword would do well. You basically have a monopoly on that market, as almost no one else covers arming sword by itself. It is how I found you in the first place!

Tbh that is half of what fencing is, especially when you have limited hand protection. Longsword works like that too 🤷‍♂️

If you use arming sword only why don't you use passing footwork ?
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Жыл бұрын
I use the footwork I need to do my actions! But honestly, it’s not easy to avoid keeping a right lead when you use single weapons, every time you step with the left you lose 1/3 of reach. It’s useful if you want to grapple mainly, not only, but mainly. I would even say that’s easier to work with passing steps and left guards while using shields, bucklers and other side weapons.
@alinvid6098
@alinvid6098 Жыл бұрын
@@FedericoMalagutti ok... I understand what you say but if you for example stary with your left foot in Front in a guard like Coda lunga streta or Guardia alicorno and you make a mandritto squalenbrato with a passing step don't you have more reach and more momentum and power ? And if you time it right with your sword in front of your body you are still not exposed right ? So using the passing step with single weapons also can still be a valid technique no ? Sorry for asking so many questions... but it would be great if you would tell me this... I really would want to know... thanks in advance !
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Жыл бұрын
@@alinvid6098 well yes, but passing steps makes you more vulnerable against single time counters (stop thrusts). It’s possible to fence that way as it is possible to fence in any way as soon as you are aware of pros and cons. Passing steps are long and take time, also if you accelerate too much you start running, which is a valid way to land actions but requires a lot of precision and previous calculations. Also it’s hard to vary them (making them shorter or longer) compared to stepping with the same foot forward, in which you can advance of 1, 2, 20, 40 cms or more depending on necessities. Passing step are committed steps, it’s not easy to recover from them. And if you are 190 cms tall, or even more, as me, this thing feels even more as a problem, because the distance of your step is huge.

@@FedericoMalagutti thank you for your answer 😊 ! This is very onformative. Me I do not practice hema cause there are no hema gyms in my area but I practive reanament we spar with synthetic and blunt steel swords in gambeson, helmet and mail gloves or gauntlets and we use the same point system as in hema ( we stop after a we score or receive a point just like in hema ) except we are not allowed to stab and do ascending cuts for safety reasons cause not everyone has a closed helmet. We sparr with heater shield and sword/punch shield ( witch we use like a buckler ) and sword and longsword. I try to apply hema techniques never the less in my sparring. I am also short height 1.72 meter So in this context I always felt that the passing step gives me an edge but as you say I have to be well aware of the risks cauae if if I don't time it right so the step is after I initiated the movement of the cut and the sword is not in front of my body I am met with counters and they do hurt 😃😄😄 Thank you for your replies my friend and thank you for constantly putting up content ! You are a great help 😊 !

What's the standard procedure for returning a captured weapon during sparring? I figured you would place the weapon on the ground for the opponent to pickup. Did you hand the blade over because she was your gf? I'm super curious now 😅
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Жыл бұрын
We do not have a standard procedure honestly. What I consider important is to not give instantly the weapon back, which per se, can be bad conditioning. Otherwise everyone gives it back his own way. Rituals are aesthetically cool, but I think that there are two kind of opponents only: The one who you’ll never want to give the weapon back, and opponents which you don’t mind give them the weapon back, so the decision is faster made! Hehe ;-)
