I do think there should be a National Trust that provides at least SOME of the funding for the preservation, that helps out the people that take on these enormous and insane projects, seeing as the rules are so strict and the buildings are being preserved for future generations of Britons. Or at least organized groups of volunteers to go around to all the historic houses being preserved and help with the labour ... as part of an accreditation system/ apprenticeship program. That would be a win-win situation! (Create jobs, promote ancient skills and help everybody out).

@Mark R The laws regarding listed buildings are so strict and often so prohibitive cost-wise, that people cannot afford to do the renovations and the houses MEANT TO BENEFIT from restoration often fall apart/DON'T get renovated (BECAUSE the rules are so restrictive). The reasoning behind the strictness of the rules is that these buildings are historical and MUST BE PRESERVED AUTHENTICALLY (for 'future Britons'). Thus my suggestion that those attempting to do the work be afforded help by the very people who are setting restrictions. (The comment wasn't about THIS specific build, but about ALL listed buildings. Not MY choice of house either).

@nancyn347 Жыл бұрын
Since it is grade 1 listed, they couldn't over-modernize it. Grade 1 listing means both inside and outside had to be preserved as much as possible.
@davidmatthews309316 күн бұрын
As others have said very little modernisation would have been allowed. My son and his partner own a tiny Grade 2 listed Georgian cottage in Kent which has much less protection than a Grade 1 but even with that their hands are tied. They wanted to insulate the walls as it was a thermal colander. Their application to do so was refused. They appealed and were finally allowed. The cottage is timber framed with horizontal weatherboard on the outside. They were allowed to remove the cladding, insulate the outside of the walls before replacing the cladding over the top. When finished the insulation and the work to fit it was completely invisible. Early on they found a problem, the lower part of the wooden frame was in poor condition. Work on the insulation had to stop while the timber frame was inspected. They were then told how it had to be repaired, a task that only specialised crap were allowed to carry out. The now live in a lovely warm characterful cottage. That stage of the renovation is behind them and they say it was well worth the hassle. I live in a stone house that is at least 100 years older than their cottage but have no such restrictions. That’s because I live in France where age alone isn’t enough to give buildings protection. Not that that freedom to ‘modernise’ without strings attached has changed much, my house has retained all the period features that were here when I bough5 it as a ruin. It still has its huge fireplaces, a stone sink and very few small windows. There are no windows at all on the northern side. I could have applied to put in more and bigger windows and even a glass double door leading out to the back garden but that was never going to happen, I was always going to keep the period charm of the building. My only concessions to the C21st except for running hot and cold water, a toilet and an insulated roof is that I replaced the wood burning cuisinaire in the kitchen with an electric Aga and the mud floor has been replaced by tiles.

In 2015 my motorcycle and I flew (Air Canada) to Paris and spent 70 days exploring western Europe. I included Great Britain and Ireland and made sure that I visited as many manors and castles as would fit into my schedule. I am still amazed at the number of historic building still standing and even more amazed at the documentation that still exists - treaties, wills, laws, agreements of all kinds - from centuries ago. I now appreciate the saying "While Canada has too much geography, Britain has too much history." Hang on to your history. It is so valuable in many ways. By the way George - Nice touch with the books you present to the owners.
