@@florenna Yeah, I thought it was more a question of not being able to hear it very often, but at least a few of these pieces would have been street music performed at festivals and fairs, which people from both the towns and countryside would have attended and heard. Not very often, granted, but a few times a year at least. And it's not like it was likely to be outcompeted by some other kind of pop music. Regardless of what GoT might suggest, you weren't likely to run into Ed Sheeran on the road. When it came to music, this would have been what occupied everyone's heads.

Love especially the Laude Novella from 14.12 - listened to this and it took me in a deep slumber from my Royal Baronial Hall to some enchanted dreamlike land where men travelled in chariots that, yet without horse, travelled faster than a frightened mare, or descended deeper than the realms of demons into long tunnels where infernal machines whisked them to remote places of outer darkness; where from such places they would ascend in magic tubes of iron to travel across the known world and beyond, from castle to castle anywhere in just a day, or even to the Moon on flaming broomsticks they called 'rockets'. Such swords of glass and iron were lit not by sun but by tiny glass bottles that even common men stuck in the rafters to make light brighter than day all night. Such cities of swords, were then lit yet more by a terrible new sun that rose in the west, that burned hotter than a thousand thousand fires, for men possessed such terrible catapults of war that a single missile could destroy a city faster than a hundred armies. Suche lande doth, indeede existeth so say our deep forest sages, not in our time, but at some time maybe 1,000 years ago or perhaps a little less.

The Cantigas are written in the early Medieval Galician variety of Galician-Portuguese, using Galician spelling; this was because of Galician-Portuguese being fashionable as a lyrical language in Castile at that time
@mariaangelesvillena89167 ай бұрын

Are there any other Pre-Christian European Cultures Music Traditions that were somewhat preserved other than those of The Norse? I imagine at least some Slavic Ones. Love the compilation though,having an eye into really anything from that time is fascinating.
@samwill59 ай бұрын
I am a huge fan of English culture (as well as the other ones on the British Isles) so I am not too surprised the English medieval music turned out to be my favourite too, but still, it's interesting England has had art to my liking every since the middle ages (and more possibly, if it was preserved). Especially the songs in your Vol. 2 were great, Estampie is my least favourite of the three I've listened so far on your compilations but still I enjoy it so much more than most of the songs. Though I love French, the French songs are a bit sombre for my taste whereas the English songs sound catchy, cheerful, have nice varied melodies and rhythm etc. Sure there will be lots of songs that go against what I've writtenfor each country but the more famous of the preserved ones definitely seem to lean more towards the tendencies I've written. The Hungarian song here is great too! Ok... by the time I got here, writing this comment, France proved me right that there must be songs more to my taste from there too as the song near the end of this video is exactly the kind of sound I love (Seignor, sachies...) ! Finally a cheerful one from my beloved France!

Some of those sound strangely modern. Kind of like rock and roll... Are those "modern interpretations" of ancient music, or did they really perform it like that?
@Djanck0004 жыл бұрын
All we have are forms of modern interpretation. Not in the "We don't have a recording of it" sense, but in many cases we don't even write music in the same way anymore, so we rely on "translations" of the musics. Sometimes we have to translate them more than once even. Like with ancient text, there are musical "dead languages" and our musical theory is pretty recent.
