The church was built in the Neo-Romantic style according to the plans of Wilhelm-Sunder Plaßmann, the chief architect of the Münster diocese, in 1904-1906. The temple houses a twelfth-century pious statue of the Virgin of Werle, also called the afflictorum Consolatrix (The consolation of the afflicted).
The consecration of the church was carried out on 24 May 1911 by Monsignor Schulte, bishop of Paderborn. Right next to the basilica is the pilgrimage church, built in the late 18th century by the Capuchin monastery in Werle, which has become too small for pilgrimages.
Since 1848, the Franciscans of Werl have been the guardians of the pilgrimage church and the Visiting Basilica. Its monastery, rebuilt in the 19th century, is next door.
The basilica was restored several times in the twentieth century, and especially during 2002-2003.
