It’s so quirky and funny that it was illegal to move outside your village.. but if you managed to do so and hid away from a year specially, they’re like “ok at that point in time, you deserve to be free! Go be free!” 😂🥳 I know that towns like 95% of the time did have walls, and whenever something had walls it was a really a hassle to enforce anything upon, and I can imagine that you would have a great deal of people trying to escape, and it’s much easier to just make a way to legalize it instead but still trying to have some sort of deterrence. Still a fun solution!

Herefordshire is an old English county. It still retains the practise of 'sin eating' in deep rural pockets. This is a where upon a death in the community, another appointed villager serving term as nominated sineater (identity kept from other villagers) arrives at the door of the deceased in hooded garb and bread is placed upon the chest of the deceased. The sineater then consumes the bread to eat the sin of the one passed. Ledbury is a wonderful town for a photo opportunity, but wise to move on.......
