So basically, if a group of riot police accidentally wandered into a time-warp and found themselves in the Dark Ages, their shields would keep them safe so long as they didn't encounter any viking warriors

I think the slow death of heavy infantry losing momentum must have been so much worse than the swift deaths of lighter infantry. Also, the visibility of having a riot shield would have been an incredible advantage but a terrifying view.

My only concern with this is that it does not take into account the concussive force that will be occurring on the neck and spine with these blows.
@The_Keeper4 жыл бұрын
Yup. Most of the blows on the Kevlar helmet would have been lethal, if not at once, then surely in a day or two.
@LCRDKazrai4 жыл бұрын
@Siward Beorn A rifle round has momentum but not much mass. Kevlar is meant to distribute the impact of a round with little mass though its many layers. The warhammer has the force of the person swinging it and much more mass behind it. I will say that if the helmet was whole and not damaged beforehand then it may have withstood the first impacts better due to the curvature allowing for blows to glance off it. A direct hit on the top of the head would have compressed the neck of a wearer and done major damage. That kind of damage can be seen during the Crusades when the flat top Templar helmets came into use. Heavier weapons such as hammers, or stones dropped from walls might not have buckled the helmets from impact, but the soldiers' heads were still pushed down and caused compression injuries to the spine and neck. It's also seen more recently during WWI when shelling caused stones and debris to fall onto the heads of soldiers wearing rounded helmets, and they also came out with neck and spine injuries (instead of being killed outright by the falling debris. That all being said, a strong blow to the head might do even more than just compression damage and instead buckle the kevlar helmet and crush the skull. As for the bec de corbin (spike) part of the hammer, that was meant to penetrate armour of all sorts. If someone of decent strength, and more importantly, good accuracy were to strike the helmet with the spike it would sink into the helmet. As we see in this video it did not penetrate all the way through the helmet. This is due to the helmet being empty. If a human head was inside then the helmet would have nowhere to bend into. At that point the target would likely have a fractured skull, even if the point didn't penetrate all the way through.

Ngl im honestly surprised from just how well the sheild managed to hold up till the end i figured it would have been shredded Sooner since its meant for bullets rather than melee.
@eon2330 Жыл бұрын
It would also be FAR less likely to be penetrated if a person was holding it. As people aren't/won't brick wall a block. They will give and bend with the momentum. So the shield would actually be stronger.
@eon2330 Жыл бұрын
Also it is ment for rocks and baseball bats. Not really bullets.

A fun video for certain, but methinks one thing is always forgotten in tests like these; shields and helmets when carried and worn have much more give under impact, rather than being braced stock still like a tree. But still, very fun video lads. ^.-.^

I enjoyed watching this but an accurate test would be to use a new helmet or shield each time so that their integrity wouldn’t be weakened from the earlier weapon. 🤙

movies are full of fake situations as a brave knight VS a bunch, with his fancy sword. a guy VS a bunch was not the usual, generally they never broke lines but could be, instead sword most likely carrying a warhammer or something else able to pierce armors

Are the weapons metallurgically accurate? Can't help but wonder if it's the modern forging process that gave those weapons the necessary structural integrity to be able to damage/penetrate a riot shield.

Matej Lachman was the axe head small in the time it was truly used? The size just made me laugh because compared to the Irish axe it was so small lol
@matejlachman58954 жыл бұрын
@@potatoslave0357 It was actually used, that reproduction is made to match precisely the original. The Slavic axe is from 10th century. back then iron was more rare. The Irish axe is approximately from 16th century, when iron was much more available.
@Kingdomkey1236784 жыл бұрын
Smaller Axe heads were meant for penetrating armor and shields. All the weight of a normal Axe head concentrated into a small area
