You never mentioned what could have been the trigger of the rebellion Supposedly, a tax collector attempted to prove that Tyler's daughter was old enough to be subject to the poll tax by PUBLICLY stripping her almost naked! This proved to be a VERY unwise action!
@brc9739 Жыл бұрын
Tyler was a legend, man defended his daughter took on the whole crown and corrupt bourgeois and paved the way for modern workers rights
@rennor3498 Жыл бұрын
@@brc9739Bourgeoisie? Lol, it was the merchants and commoners who were likely were suffering the most during this period. Remember that one of the concessions the rebels made featured in the video was freedom of trade. The pol tax along with the church tight and othet forms of taxation could financially ruin a bourgeois at the time, worse than it could a peasant, as a serf who could just simply return to work the field. While a business man risked having his entire trade crumble because crown undertook legislation damaging his trade. The contemporary londoner bourgeoisie certainly welcomed the rebellion and used to destroy the local Hanseatic trade monopoly controlled by Flemish merchants, who were exempt from the taxes and enjoyed great financial autonomy and priviledge in the city.

Since all you videos are on the Medieval Times (and they're great by the way) would you have any desire to go back to the period in time if possible? One of the catch cries of the peasants in this revolt came from the biblical idea that just after the expulsion from the garden of Eden there was no social hierarchy and no distinction between rich and poor "When Adam delved(dug) and Eve span -who was then the gentleman?"Actually the Bible especially the New Testament with its exhaltation of the poor and humble and denigration of the wealthy was often a source of rebellion and insurgency and inspired so much unrest.This happened on a huge scale in Germany with Martin Luther and his ideas leading to the massive peasant's revolt there with Luther having to renege on his ideas and his condemning of the massive insurrection.No wonder then that the church and the establishments liked to keep such tight control on the Bible and discouraged translations.This sort of thing reached crescendo level with the English Civil War and with the extreme left wing of the Puritan movement who took the Book of Revelation literally and the Fifth Monarchy idea.Actually it was Calvinism and its offshoots in places like England,scotland,the Netherlands and above all New England in the U.S. with its republican anti-monarchical impetus (If there be no bishops there be no kings exclaimed king James the First to the puritan leaders who later set sail for New England)that probably had a lot more to do with promotion of democracy and parliamentary government than remote Athenian democracy and Roman republicanism -though the intelligentsia often nodded rather symbolically to this era.John Milton.Cromwell's Latin secretary and great English poet wrote the first thorough plea for freedom of the press in his "Areopagitica" and he is recognized as such in American revolutionary documents.

A rather flippant and cursory treatment of one of the most important events, along with the signing of The Magna Carta and The Civil War, of English history. These three events are the cornerstones and foundations of English Liberty which were later to find expression in The Declaration of Independence and The US Constitution by the English/American colonialists but who sadly failed to live up to their ideals, virtually from day one, by excluding black slaves in their pious pronouncements. The price for this exclusion is still being paid today.

Dude from day one it was the freedom for the aspirational mercantile class and the peasants were kicked off land and forced into indentured wage earning. British Liberalism was only ever about and for the ascendency and domination of merchant class. Industrialization enabled by The same systems were then exported to Ireland and other parts of Europe. What happened to 90% of people during the industrial Revolution and liberalization was forced on them and absolutely brutal. While you are right about the Americans excluding blacks, their Revolution, because they had so much land and opportunity, actually did benefit the white underclasses and all those rushing their shores to flee the brutal “liberal” tyranny of Europe. .

In America almost all the taxes are paid by the rich. The top 20% of earns pay almost all. As well the creation of wealth has only made the lower classes more wealthy. It is an economic fallacy that someone has to get poorer for one to get richer . I’m sure none of you commenting about this understand the difference between a progressive tax system vs a regressive tax system. There are individuals who see losses and pay very little in income tax but then the following year make up for it if they make a profit or have unrealized gains and you ruin an entire system taxing those. Also in the US our poor are some of the richest lower classes in the world have flat screen tvs and cars. Meaning as the rich get richer so do the poor as they need more labor. Also paying for the whole country to run! Or we just print it………….but that would be a governmental problem lol
