Supergroups usually imply musicians in the twilight of their careers hoping to milk a few more albums and tours off name-recognition. But Divine Council’s median age can’t be over 20, yet they carry themselves with the same self-confidence and veteran mentality. There’s something regal about the four-piece, rappers $ilkmoney, Cyrax!, Lord Linco, and producer ICYTWAT. Maybe it’s in the name.
Like fellow child of the internet Lil Yachty, the Council has successfully converted a youth-skewed Soundcloud following to tangible success, including sold out LA shows and a deal with Epic records just within the past year. Still, there’s an element of mystery surrounding the group’s origins and their swift rise, at least for those uninitiated to the individual members' projects and collaborations scattered across the net. The myth surrounding the deal - brokered directly with L.A. Reid, at behest of André 3000 - immediately puts eyes on them as newcomers with the weight of two of hip-hop's greats behind them. When André himself came down from the clouds to lace $ilk’s “Decemba” with a monster feature last month, the Council join Frank Ocean as one of the few newer artists to get a direct cosign. If that wasn’t enough, Erykah Badu’s a fan, too. We sat down with Divine Council over some Halloween candy to talk shop - moving out of Richmond, and their path to becoming the supergroup they seem destined to be.
