Welcome to Part Four of our September/October 2022 Ocean Journey, A Mediterranean Odyssey, aboard the Viking Sea.
This time, our trip takes us from Barcelona, Spain, to the heart of Tuscany, Italy.
In Part Four, we are off the Viking Sea and on land for our Tuscan extension in the stunning Tuscan countryside. Our Tuscan Extension features Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and the beautiful Tuscan Countryside of the Chianti wine region.
Part Five will feature the Viking Sea, a Viking dining guide, and our impressions and commentary on the trip.

What an interesting extension to your cruise in such a beautiful area, I am itching to go. And thank you for a well-presented video, I enjoy your tongue-in-cheek humour. It seems it really pays to carefully research and choose the excursions/extensions - and the cruise line. I've never cruised but am seriously considering it and your videos are persuading me towards smaller ships that are more port-of-call focussed. As keen independent travellers who loathe crowds spoiling the sights (all those OTHER people, why are they there? :), we structure our days to arrive early at the sites before the tour groups. We enjoy a relatively undisturbed view, leisurely lunch, then relax in parks and cafes in the afternoon, and stroll around in the evening for the atmosphere. At Topkapi Palace and Haghia Sofia in Istanbul, we got there a good 20 minutes before opening, got to experience everything in peace, and I noticed when leaving that the tour groups were shuffling around in huge queues barely able to see. I understand that Rome in the early morning and evening is beautiful.

This post-cruise extension was very well organized (except for the return home part :-) and the Tuscan countryside was stunning! As with almost any visit to a major city in Italy you must share with thousands of sightseers. It was almost a “shock to the system” to go from Venice to the countryside! I know what you mean about taking things easy and trying to avoid the crowds. Unfortunately it is almost impossible these days to do that… especially when on a cruise. We normally like to get out and explore on our own, but the situation today makes that more difficult. We like the smaller ships as well and will never (I know.. Never say Never :-) go back to the “cities at sea!” Happy Travels! Tom
