This was so informative, thank you so much. I'm a beginner in gardening and without knowing bought a bag of clay soil which I later found out was not so suitable for plants. I have been mixing it up with sand and using it. Some of my plants are doing well with it, will now try it with vermicompost as well

Very informative. Any suggestion on how I could I make a well draining soil mix for my indoor garden herbs. The regular potting mix with a lite perlite added isnt working. Soil is too wet, and takes a long time to dry out.

Very useful information, thank you!! Pumice, perlite (as well as zeolite and attapulgite) are cheap and easy to find in my country (being one of the main exporters worldwide), pine bark is relatively available too, but coco peat isn't easy to find and coco chips are impossible to get. I haven't been able to find horticultural charcoal either, but I'm guessing if you get a good quality charcoal, it'll be ok. What's the best replacement for coco chips, in your opinion? Thank you and have a great day!!

Hi Ann, I had two questions regarding clay soil. 1. How does one understand when the soil needs watering? Clay soil compacts as it dries and I am not able to poke my finger inside to check the moisture in the soil. I have lost a few plants which I bought from local nurseries because of this and because I was yet to learn the cues of the plant. 2. Approximate ratio of vermicompost to clay soil would be 1:1? And can vermicompost be replqced with cow dung manure/leaf mould? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Ann. I tried this mix minus peat moss and cinder. Some of indoor plants struggled in this mix and i had to shift these in water. Does any of the components need some procedure after you buy these in packets....like dry these or give a days of sun before mixing or wash and then dry in sun???Any other things?

Hi Ann, the final mixture makes sense. Thanks for the information. One question though, will this reduce the risk of mealy bugs, compared to regular soil mix? This question is because I have regular infestations in my balcony.
@radhakrishnanpillai2330
@radhakrishnanpillai2330 Жыл бұрын
Hey Akhila, Mealy bugs are not because of the soil mix at all...they are attracted to high nitrogen levels and soft growth; may appear if you overwater and over-fertilize your plants.
