This is a vastly smarter thing to do than attend a prestigious uni that costs a lot. Many top high schoolers are taking advantage of the full or severely lower cost tuition offered by public universities with acceptance to their honors college/program . This is what my class valedictorian did, taking an offer from our state's flagship, and then attending a top 25 med school. He's now at Johns Hopkins for his residency.

For most of high school I dreamt of going to notre dame or duke or some other elite school, but the closer I got to applying the more I realized that they’re all incredibly expensive and not necessary worth the cost, especially since I knew I wanted to go into medicine. So I ended up applying to three schools, all cheap state schools where I knew I would get good scholarships. In undergrad I had good grades, 99th percentile mcat, research publications, and then a job working in a healthcare consulting firm during my gap year, all which apparently look great when applying to med school. I didn’t apply to any “top” med schools because again I didn’t feel like it was worth getting into 100k+ debt, so I chose the (relatively) cheap(er) public school in my home state. Maybe it would be nice if I could tell people I went to Harvard for undergrad or med school, but nowadays schools like Harvard don’t bring that much more to the table relative to their high tuition costs.

@@steve9605 Publications is referring to how many papers were published with their name on it. For example, if you worked in a lab that researched cancer and they made a breakthrough they would put your name on the paper detailing the results of their research since you helped them get there.

I love your mature mindset, and it's really great advice. I also found that schools that are /aren't a match with personality type can impact performance. I transferred out of an Ivy to a smaller school where I was able to establish relationships with my professors and peers and the environment wasn't so cutthroat. I felt like I was able to allow my curiosity to direct my learning, so in that respect, more of my internal resources were available.

In general, yes, it matters b/c ivy league is seen as more favorable when it comes to any context/situation (i.e. applying for school, social settings, applying for jobs, etc.)...even if one doesn't make the most of the opportunities/research etc that's more available at ivy league schools. med schools are mainly concerned with gpa and mcat, so ivy league matter less, but still is preferred with all else being equal.

In India too, we can directly get into medicine (MBBS) after completing 12th grade (which we call pre-uni) by giving a competitive/entrance exam. I think it's because we follow British education system.

I’m a white male. Struggled all my life. Was born in southern white trailer trash. Had parents who were cult members, and tried to endocrine me with the supposition that” doctors were of the devil.” When I finally broke away from them, I had no money, no resources, and no education. Hell, I’m still working full time in my 30’s just to pay for college and living expenses out of my own pocket. YES… *in general* minority students such as African Americans have had a very difficult go of it from the day they were born, and the day their parents were born, and so on after that. BUT…can I tell you that it’s frankly BulS*** that “White male” students have connections and money. Everyone I grew up with gave up and just ended up selling drugs, overdosing and dying, or thrown in prison because we were taught “you’re a white man, you have privilege, and inherently you should just give the opportunities to those more deserving.” I’m white, I’m male, I’ve never acted rudely or improperly around a woman, and I’m not a misogynist…like everyone would think I am. I’m also white, male, and watching all the friends I did make of a different ethnic origin get into schools that I could only dream of… with lower GPA’s, lower MCAT scores, less volunteering and clinical research. When the hell are we going to look at PEOPLE and start throwing out race? I grew up in Atlanta about 3 miles from Dr. King’s memorial and church. I have photos of his plaques of “non-violence” tenants hung on my poor white trash wall. I don’t think this was the future he envisioned. I’m all for equally of opportunity, but what you’re talking about is equally of outcome. Frankly, I thought you were more intelligent. Man it sure would be nice if I could get a scholarship and into the school of my choice if it were only up to how hard a person was willing to work for it, rather than the color of my skin. …and before you go commenting like “well you haven’t had to put up with x,y,and z your whole life… or you don’t know what it’s like to be arrested for just looking the way you look” YES… I do. Iowa State is hidden gem. So is University of Iowa. If both started marketing themselves more to the coasts and to kids of different backgrounds, they would attract more critical mass and become more interesting places than they already are (not to mention more widespread reputations). He is very young, so I'm looking into this waaayyy in advance - getting started on my homework early. We are an upper middle class African American family, so the networking benefits and peer group available at an Ivy League environment would probably be worth it for us in order to overcome the cultural social biases that are sometimes stumbling blocks for minorities. I don't normally do this, but come on man, accepted at a dozen MD schools? That just smells of BS, many of my peers graduate/ apply from MIT with a 3.8+ GPA, 520+ MCAT, with publications and a ridiculous amount of volunteer, clinical, research hours, and have the social skills to close interviews. While they got into medical schools I think the most I heard was one guy getting 6 acceptances. 12 is underheard of, and even if someone out there did do that, I doubt they are bragging about it on youtube comments.

Dr. Jubbal - I hear you when you say that what ultimately matters in medicine (and in almost any endeavor) is YOUR effort and YOUR work ethic. That was my motto too, all throughout college and since arriving to the United States at 13. However, nowadays I find myself doubting whether that is at all true, at least in terms of medical school admissions. And here is why: At an Ivy League medical school interview, most (~10/12) came from top colleges, like Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Duke, etc. I, in turn, graduated from a state school in Florida, not into the party scene, missed out on some family and friend gatherings because of the all too familiar “sorry, i have to study”, and had part-time jobs here and there. It was “worth it” because I graduated with a bachelors of science in biomedical engineering, summa cum laude, first in my class, and first in my family to get a degree in the US. During college, while some opportunities were readily available, like becoming a student leader, others were much harder to get (My school does not have its own medical center or hospital, like some schools do, like University of Michigan or Rutgers New Brunswick for example. So, early on, when I became interested in medicine, I applied to be a volunteer at a local hospital. The Volunteer Services office sent me a nice waitlisted letter - rightfully so, because they were overwhelmed with the amount of volunteers already serving). I know many other highly qualified students who could sit at a top medical school interview, because they have the work ethic, their grades are good, they volunteer in their community, some do research while others work for a living. To conclude, and to avoid an even longer comment, I think that where you go to college, specifically speaking to the resources and opportunities they have, has a substantial impact on your trajectory as a competitive applicant. I’m not saying that premeds who are not at a top college are out of luck. Some state schools can provide you with meaningful opportunities. At others, you’d be pretty much on your own when it comes to finding meaningful experiences. Thankfully, I was accepted by another med school. But that experience at the Ivy League school has shaken my beliefs. This does not directly apply to the topic of the video, but I keep hearing over and over again that job-seekers with a prestigious college name on their resume are more likely to get an interview and even the job. And i’ve come to believe it too. Dr. Jubbal, any thoughts? Do med school admissions committee actually review each application holistically?

I agree with you. I think Dr J slightly underweights the value of an Ivy degree. (I speak as someone with a non-Ivy undergrad and two graduate degrees from Harvard-not medical school though.) The point he makes at 4:02 is true, but I don’t think he realizes how often people make that comparison - that is, how often people treat all other factors as _approximately_ equal, and then get starry eyed at the prestige of the Ivy League. Moreover, while it’s plausible that admission committees don’t pay much attention to your undergraduate institution, and most patients will not even bother to look it up during your career, there are many other situations where it will matter a lot. Especially if you, like Dr. J, ever decide to do something outside of medicine. For instance, I’m sure he would benefit from a Harvard degree now in his business ventures. It opens doors like few other things do.

I'm going to attend the College of Wooster, which is a small research/liberal arts school in Ohio. They have a great Pre-Health program and quite a few opportunities to do research, volunteer at local hospitals, etc. It isn't a "prestigious school," per-say, but the collaborative atmosphere with individualized attention will definitely be a plus! In addition, I would ideally like to attend Northwestern medical school in the future.

I plan on applying to USC, Chapman, NYU. I’m going public, and I know this school is right for me because of internships, and connection opportunities. You haven't converted the currency, let alone normalised the hours (and Swedish doctors could work more, if they want ) let alone considered the shift length. Tax covered anything is as limiting as the tax code, being born poor isn't nearly as hereditary in Sweden as it is in Germany let alone the USA...and covering colleges isn't the first thing a government needs to do to improve the social mobility (but it would help with the health care crisis you appear to have) .

Also, the workplace of my parents too. She couldn’t find work without any work experience. They had to pull strings to get her in and mention she’s Ivy League. One thing in this video that is not correct is the notion that the student who goes to UC Berkeley will have many more opportunities for research as other places. This is not necessarily true. In fact, because the competition for research positions is much more fierce at schools like a UC Berkeley, the chances of landing them declines. Believe it or not, there are scores of smaller liberal arts colleges that offer research opportunities not available at the most selective universities, particularly large state schools like UCLA, UC Berkeley, Michigan, or Wisconsin. Also incorrect is the idea that, all else being equal, the applicant from, say, an Ivy League school, will typically gain admission over the student from a less "prestigious" school (silly that the narrator compared with a community college). Why? First, because medical, law schools and grad schools know that people choose colleges for different reasons -- cost, geography, late bloomer. Second, because Ivy League kids at competitive medical and law schools are a dime a dozen and all grad schools want critical mass; so, the student who went to, say, Kansas State or Ohio Wesleyan and excelled there and on the standardized tests, can actually have an advantage over the kid from the fancy school.

Smart-ass (in a good way) decisions for approaching post secondary school selection. Good on you, mate. I'm planning to teach high school science and math in New York City. I won't be a dedicated college adviser, but I still want to guide students by helping them make cost-effective decisions, when selecting a university. Unlike most people I have 2 bachelor degrees (math and chemistry), and I'm finishing a masters in materials science and engineering, before pursuing a teaching license. Even though I've been in school for so long, I found ways to essentially break even financially in every case. I just enjoyed learning math and science so much I decided to stick around. In a sense I went to college purely as a scholar, but I decided I didn't want to be broke anymore so I'm studying personal finance in the hopes of becoming a millionaire later.

Great video and great advice. Is it possible to do a video about top 5-20 medical schools and what sets them apart from lower ranked (with regards to them) medical schools? Also, would it be possible to explain how come in some tops (such as US News), there is a different ranking list for medical schools, based on whether they focus on clinical or primary care. And how come the Washington University Medical School in Saint Louis, is so high ranked, prestigious, considering that it's not a medical school that comes to mind, when thinking about prestigious medical schools (at least for me) and would it be possible to do a video about such medical schools, that are prestigious, but that people don't associate with being prestigious. I admit that when thinking about prestigious medical schools, the ones from the Ivy League, Stanford and UC system come to mind.

@@nasjp3969 I came down to MIT and Vandy as a premed 3 years ago. I ended up at MIT largely because I love New England and have a lot of family in Boston (even though I'm from Colorado). However in retrospect, I wish I considered Vandy a little more heavily, my brother goes there now and absolutely loves it, and even if it is weaker academically it offers so much more in terms of the overall college experience. I highly encourage you to apply, and would strongly recommend applying ED1 if you love it. Too many Ivy League rejects panic after getting denied ED at Harvard or such, and use Vandy as a 2nd choice, and based on admission statistics, Vanderbilt admission officers don't think very highly of this. I'm currently applying to med schools and just finished my MCAT. If you have any questions I'd like to help, but honestly, there's nothing I would say that differs significantly from the consensus found on the internet.

I think, but am not sure, that prestigious universities get their prestige based on the success of its current/former students. The more successful students that attended said college, the ore prestige the school re wives over time until they are seen as a school that produces “winners” or “highly successful students.” I’m not sure what the criteria is for student acceptance but I’m almost sure it is partially based on the potential success of the student to be admitted and how that success will benefit said university. I don’t think there is anything wrong with a prestigious school because “IT IS THE STUDENT THAT MAKES THE SCHOOL.” Can I get a AMEN???

I'm curious why you chose UCSD vs Harvard for the thumbnail. Both are prestigious and excellent schools. This year's incoming freshmen class has an average goa of 4.1 (weighted). It would be more accurate to put a Cal state (which are still really good), a school that doesn't rank, or a community college. It felt mismatched for the title.

UCSD is like barely 1 or 2 steps below Harvard. I’ve done everything I can to get into there and I’m well into my 30’s now. Now I’m just denied because I have too many “upper class units” to get into a UC school. Despite my 3.95 in California Community college. It would be just about as as easy for me to get into Harvard as it would UCSD at this point. Now I’m scared I won’t even ever get into med school because I had to settle on SDSU. Even if I keep up a 4.0 GPA in my last year or so at SDSU and kill the MCAT, I probably will still have to go out of state somewhere… no matter what. I did absolutely everything I could to get into UCSD. Perfect in every area, still I’m disqualified.

I'm transferring to University of Maryland - Main Campus to finish off my undergrad. My friend is a plant geneticist major there and he's told me of all the possible research opportunities at UMD. Along with that, the College Park fire department allows for tuition reimbursement and a place to live for free. I love volunteering as a Firefighter/EMT and I think it will be just a great experience to still be able to do that while at UMD and also further my education at a great university with plenty of resources and opportunities. Anyone go to UMD care to share some insight?

Honestly the college you go to does not matter unless you want to be a big time politician, part of a big law firm, work for google or wall street, start a multi-millionaire company other than that🤷‍♀️Whether you got your education from standford/an ivy or community college could matter less! I do not know where half of my doctors went to.

I went to Ole Miss, graduated with a BA in psych and minor in neuroscience. Got PhD interviews in top 10 neuroscience programs and Ole Miss doesn't even have a neuro major. Ultimately decided to go to another SEC school because I didn't feel comfortable at those private schools. If I do a postdoc, I'll most likely try to do one at a top 10 school though.

I've recently finished my A levels and about to study Medicine as an undergrad. I've always wondered why the U.S needs you to be a postgraduate to apply for Med-school? Is it because it's super competitive so if you don't make it, you have a degree to fall back on? I've never known.

Lol, I hope medical school admissions take into account that MIT has grade deflation because my GPA is not where it should be. MIT has whipped me in the butt especially in the coding classes that are required for most majors. Plus, MIT's general chemistry is swished into a semester while everywhere else's is a full year.

going to Berea College this fall in Kentucky and I’m thankful I get to go to there bc there’s no tuition for any student admitted(33% acceptance). Thankful I get to go and live on campus and leave home with little to no debt going into DPT school.

The biggest effect of going to a higher ranked undergraduate school is that is simply pushes you more. One is hit hard from the first day and there is an easier transition into medical school.

I am interviewing for medical schools rn and I am gonna add to what is being said in this video. Where you go to college absolutely matters. While it is not directly the deciding factor, going to a big name university allows you better opportunities for research and involvement and the letters of rec that you get are from leaders in scientific fields. Also, the education, mentorship, and networking that you get are arguably superior which allows you to be better prepared. moreover, some medical schools have a bias for their own students. So in short, yes it does matter where you have graduated form.

I am currently transferring to a school thats consider elite after community college but sometime I feel guilty going while most of my peers are transferring the state schools. It's usually not normal for people from my CC to transfer to this school and wonder if this will be the good choice. It's like when they ask me where I am transferring to then the first thing they say is "oh you got money" or "thats expensive". Also my highschool was barely competitive as going to a college was a big deal at my highschool

That's kinda not true though. It has a better effect on people without money because they are trying to change that situation and will work ten times harder. As a teacher, I have seen people who believe they belong there never actually accomplish anything (rich people) and get carried along. However, people who couldn't afford it went above and beyond to make it work for them.
