Photo Elicitation & PhotoVoice as a Participatory Action Research method

In Participatory Action Research (PAR), photo-elicitation and photo voice are powerful tools to let people speak their minds through pictures. Sometimes it can be hard for participants to sit in front of an interviewer who looks them in the eyes and asks questions. Talking about a picture can then put them at ease, as it literally drags the attention away from them, towards the picture you are discussing. In this video I show you how you can integrate photo-elicitation and photovoice in PAR, giving you an example from the field, in Kampala, Uganda.

Many thanks. Before I watch your video, I have zero understanding about Photp elicitation and photo vocie methods, but after watching it, I got basic understanding about the method. Much appercietion for your time and effort.

Thank you, I have been looking for a research method that I can do with very young children where they don't have to be interviewed in an uncomfortable manner which may skew their responses to please the person in authority (me) who is also their teacher. I am asking them honestly about if they like their learning activities and I think to challenge me on things they don't like would be taboo for them so pictures is a great way to see what they do and don't like and they have the pictures to remind them and use to help them to talk about their opinion - especially good for children with special needs and communication difficulties so it is inclusive too - thank you so much for this practical guide it has been invaluable and I enjoyed seeing how you have used this in the community you were researching!
