I know a lot people had problem with the ending of the movie and the other characters in the movie, keeping aside what really happened (no one knows for sure), but i think this is the perfect story telling from all the dramas and movies i have seen so far on meera bai. Why? Because they showed what a real bhakt gos through in real life (even though we like to imagine that this world is perfect n meera must have been loved by everyone). No husband would want to have a wife like meera, so the character played by vinod Kahana was perfect portrayal. Her family was happy n encouraged her bhakti when she was child but once she grew up they were disappointed in her. Her in-laws even those who were excepting her at first also went stood against her. Some loved her for her bhajans, people that were like her loved her. And the rest of the society stood against her because she was breaking society rules. Even today people of the place where meera was born do not name their daughter meera because people want saints like her to be born but no one want their daughter to be like meera bai. Just think about it some young beautiful girl telling her family that she don't want to get married because she consider kriahna to be her husband. Some would laugh like bhoj raj but most would do everything possible to change her mind and force her to live like normal girl. Poor girl would not even have any friends.

Yes,you are right.She died of poisoning.Coming from a princely family her conduct was not in keeping with the rules especially being a female. गुलजार ने फिल्म बनाई थी मीरां। उस की पटकथा पुस्तक रूप में छपी थी। तब मैं काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय वाराणसी में शोध छात्र था, 35 वर्ष पहले की बात है। मीरां देखने के बाद से मैं गुलजार के सोच-विचार का विरोधी हो गया। जब एक साथी ने 2011 में कथा पत्रिका का मीरां पर विशेषांक निकाला, मैं ने गुलजार के कारनामों को याद किया। बकौल गुलजार मीरां को विष देने का आदेश 'धर्म अदालत' ने दिया था। मीरां जब विषपान करके घर से बाहर निकल एक मंदिर में बैठकर भजन गा रही थीं, वहां अकबर आया, भजन सुनने लगा। भजन सुनकर अकबर ने गले से मोती की माला निकाल मीरां आगे फेंका। मीरां ने सलाम बजाया और बक्शीस ले लिया। इस भोड़ी प्रस्तुति का माकूल जवाब मैंने अपने आलेख में दिया। भारतीय परंपरा में 'धर्म अदालत' नहीं होती, न्याय करने का कार्य राजा ही करता था, कोई चुटियाधारी ब्राह्मण धर्माधिकारी नहीं। जैसे ईसाइयों के राज्य में पादरी चर्च में न्यायालय चलते थे और मुस्लिम राज्य में काजी अदालत चलाते थे। 'धर्म अदालत' का आरोप मिथ्या है। जब अकबर मेवाड़ गया था, उस समय मीरां द्वारका में थी‌। उनकी उम्र अकबर की माँ की उम्र से अधिक थी। सबसे असह्य बात गुलजार वह वामपंथी मानसिकता है जिससे उसने मीरां पर फिल्म बनाई थी। जब अटल सरकार आई थी गुलजार डा. जोशी के यहाँ आया था। अभी मोदी सरकार में ज्ञानपीठ से पुरस्कृत हुआ। ऐसा लगता है कि विद्वान साहित्यकारों का देश में अभाव हो गया है या योग्य लोग निर्णायक नहीं हैं। Pramod Dubey ji

The only thing that seemed a problem to me was Vinod Khanna's character, who plays the husband of Meerabai. Unlike what the movie shows, Meerabai's husband, Bhojraj loved Meera very much and he himself was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. It is said that oneday Meerabai was sleeping next to her husband and suddenly she woke up hearing the sound of her husband crying. , but she did not move or say anything. She listened carefully . I saw this movie when it was first released in 1979 and now once again today. Hema Malini as Meera has done full justice and I can bet anything that no other can depict the devotion and love for Krishna as Hema Malini . All the songs/ bhajans are par excellence by Vani Jairam under Pt Ravi Shankar. i am glad that Lata Mangeshkar refused to sing these beautiful compositions. But feel very sad for all those talents that have been crushed under the monopoly of Lata Mangeshkar.

Mr Gulzar’s Meera (1979) has been a film that I have visited at least a dozen times. Though the film has only three authentic historical facts namely that Meerabai did exist (time indicated is wrong), her verses (historians vary from 2 to 78 as being penned by her) and her documented devotion to Lord Krishna in the form of spiritual husband, this movie still has some strange attraction for me. The film has been made sensitively, sets are beautiful as they were shot on location and most actors were ideally suited for the role they played onscreen. Perhaps this is the only film where Meera has looked so serene and innocent. Music, choice of bhajans and Vani Jairam’s enchanting voice were like embellishing of stars on a dark night. Meerabai, the saint continues to enthral us because she represents love without boundaries, love not restricted by traditions, caste or creed and her ability to stand for and live by her belief despite oppression, which was no mean feat for a royal woman in that era. The film subtly portrays her transition from feeling helmed, growing inner peace and strength as her convictions give her self-assurance and finally merging or being one with God. The last major scene of the film depicting the dharma adaalat or religious court where she was tried (though not true in reality) was like a philosophical poem enacted on screen. It gives so much insight into the constant debate and ugly fights about traditionalism versus unconventionalism. The reason why Meerabai will be appreciated till eternity is because her bhajans combine spirituality, purity of love, longing, joy and ecstasy of union with her beloved Krishna (oneness with God). The same emotions were later found in the writings of the Sufi saints. It also gives a feeling that so much strife on religious beliefs is needless, pointless, useless and wanton. If one does not have much penchant for historical accuracy then this film is definitely a one-time watch. For people who enjoy this genre of films may like another black and white film called Jogan starring Dilip Kumar and Nargis.

मीराबाई का जन्म सन 1498 ई॰ में पाली के कुड़की गांव में दूदा जी के चौथे पुत्र रतन सिंह के घर हुआ। ये बचपन से ही कृष्णभक्ति में रुचि लेने लगी थीं। मीरा का विवाह मेवाड़ के सिसोदिया राज परिवार में हुआ। उदयपुर के महाराजा भोजराज इनके पति थे जो मेवाड़ के महाराणा सांगा के पुत्र थे। विवाह के कुछ समय बाद ही उनके पति का देहान्त हो गया। पति की मृत्यु के बाद उन्हें पति के साथ सती करने का प्रयास किया गया, किन्तु मीरा इसके लिए तैयार नहीं हुईं। मीरा के पति का अंतिम संस्कार चित्ततोड़ में मीरा की अनुपस्थिति में हुआ। पति की मृत्यु पर भी मीरा माता ने अपना श्रृंगार नहीं उतारा, क्योंकि वह गिरधर को अपना पति मानती थी।[3] वे विरक्त हो गईं और साधु-संतों की संगति में हरिकीर्तन करते हुए अपना समय व्यतीत करने लगीं। पति के परलोकवास के बाद इनकी भक्ति दिन-प्रतिदिन बढ़ती गई। ये मंदिरों में जाकर वहाँ मौजूद कृष्णभक्तों के सामने कृष्णजी की मूर्ति के आगे नाचती रहती थीं। मीराबाई का कृष्णभक्ति में नाचना और गाना राज परिवार को अच्छा नहीं लगा। उन्होंने कई बार मीराबाई को विष देकर मारने की कोशिश की। घर वालों के इस प्रकार के व्यवहार से परेशान होकर वह द्वारका और वृन्दावन गई। वह जहाँ जाती थी, वहाँ लोगों का सम्मान मिलता था। लोग उन्हें देवी के जैसा प्यार और सम्मान देते थे। मीरा का समय बहुत बड़ी राजनैतिक उथल-पुथल का समय रहा है। बाबर का हिंदुस्तान पर हमला और प्रसिद्ध खानवा का युद्ध उसी समय हुआ था। इन सभी परिस्थितियों के बीच मीरा का रहस्यवाद और भक्ति की निर्गुण मिश्रित सगुण पद्धति सर्वमान्य बनी।

I truly find Meerabai as an inspiration but there were many loopholes in the characterization of Bhojraj and Meera. Bhojraj was really supportive and he never judged Meera. Not a single time. Also. Meera treated Radha as her 'swamini' while Radha treated her like her lil sis. Another issue. Meera was not given death sentence. Krishna saved her when she was poisoned. The travels to Vrindavan and Dwarka were ignored. Rest the good part was how Meera protested against non-veg.
