I just get my head around anyone 'fearing' porcupines, unless they believe the silly idea that they can shoot their quills. They seem designed to define cuteness. Even their voices are squee-worthy.
@animalwondersmontana9 ай бұрын
They can sure be scary if your dog is trying to go after them (understandably so). Otherwise, they're usually really chill and just want you to keep out of their personal bubble.

Most rodents are scary with their huge, iron-coated teeth! That’s why their teeth are often orange… straight-up iron for enamel.

I’m sure it’s easier rehabbing or caring for babies like this too…

Yeah, they can be quite big. We had one living in a tree at a summer camp I once worked at. They find dead, hollow trees if they can, to live in. They poop down the hollow till it fills up, then find another tree. At least, that's what the camp naturalist taught us. There was plenty of evidence around the bottom of this tree. Way up in the tree, the fellow looked small enough, but I once saw him (her?) on the ground; big and trying to seem threatening. I just kept my distance and thought, 'Oh, you big cutie!'

When I was growing up one year a porcupine seemed to have made a den behind our shed. Me and my mom were walking down our driveway and saw her crossing in front of us about 20ft away. We were initially quite startled because she was big enough we thought at first it was a black bear, and then noticed that it had a smaller porcupine following behind it, so we suspected it was a mother. We just let her cross to the other side. We are in a wooded area and on the other side of the driveway that she was walking to is state forest (although they would have to cross a stream) so it made sense as a place they might make a den, and I think we saw her at least one other time that year.

I remember one of my best outdoor moments of my life was when me and my friend were hiking in the Berkshires, and a porcupine joined us on the trail. Naturally we kept our distance, and were able to walk with him for maybe half a mile before he reached his stop and got off the trail. (We stayed about 10/15 feet behind him the whole time) It was such an amazing experience, and truly the most full of awe I have been in my life. (Also for people who aren't from near me, the Berkshires are the mountains in western Massachusetts/northeastern New York)
