Oranges, lemons and avocados are some of the fruits being grown in B.C.’s South Coast - thanks to a group of growers experimenting with growing subtropical and Mediterranean fruit in a province typically deemed too cold for them. The growers say they hope to inspire more conversations around food security and climate resilience.

This is Amazing!! absolutely amazing. when I was younger I remember asking why we cannot grow fruits typically from warmer climates and told "It's too cold here" but my argument was if we can grow Tomatoes in a "Hot House" why not say Limes, Oranges etc. and yet again to be reasoned with "Well you can grow it ,but it would bear no fruit".

I'm trying to grow passionfruits in Ontario. Plants are in containers and I bring them indoors by a window in the winter. Pretty simple setup, I don't even have a greenhouse. So far, I'm only gotten fruit from the maypop variety, but fingers crossed for the others, they normally only produce fruit on their second year, and I've only had them for one year. The plants look healthy so far.

Isn't it environmental unfriendly trying to grow tropical plants in cold climate? You need to burn fuel.

Yes, it is and they should be ashamed of what they're doing,.

The first greenhouse burns wood for heat, the second one said he uses lightbulbs 10 days a year for added heat and it costs him 2$ in electricity. That’s about as environmentally friendly as it gets …..

@@PacoSkippin burning wood releases carbon dioxide and is not environmentally friendly.

The one lady has a small youtube channel. I vaguely recall that she has a second layer inside the greenhouse to help preserve heat when it gets cold. It's amazing what a second layer can do, I recently had some endive lettuce in an unheated greenhouse, under a second sheet of plastic that survived a -9 (-20 wind chill) blizzard. It did get a bit of damage but most of it is still edible.
