It's true, thanks to the generosity of viewer Paul, I have a 2002 Peugeot 106 Independence, and I've named it 'Dumpit'. Why? You'll have to watch and find out (that's kinda the deal...)
The plan? To run this car on a very tight budget! How tight? Oh, you'll have to wait and see!

Yes yes yes budget motoring at its finest!! My mate bought one brand new in 2001 just when the then new '51' reg came out. We ridiculed him at the time but within an hour we all ate our words. For a 1.1 it was a flyer. Even 4 up loaded for the coast on a Friday night it was brilliant. Suprisingly torquey again for a 1.1. It would lean for weeks in the corners but never understeered or was ever in danger of rolling. These and the saxo are from a time when car were fun. Fun colours , Blue door cards , blue dials or green carpets with funky as hell seat patterns truly wonderful. Well done Richard. You've scored. Long live dumpit.

Well said sir. Had my 106 for just over 7 years nowc& in 40 years of motoring I think it rates amongst the best. Cheap to run/insure, fun to drive, with enough practicality to suit my needs. Just need to watch those hidden areas for the dreaded corrosion, as that's what tends to kill them off! 👍

For me it is the 2CV I can’t afford. But faster! Thanks Rich for your long videos. I like listening to you and your philosophy. It’s soothing and inspiring. See you soon. I had an old Nissan estate back in the 90's it cheaper to buy that than hire a van to remove the overgrown garden i had taken over. I cant remember the model (think it may have been numbers) but it was bigger than the bluebird. Everyone used to use that car for garden and rubbish tip runs, the keys where above the sun visor and the only rules were park it back were you found it and it must half half a tank of fuel in it. I kept it for 10 months sold it for a fair bit more than i paid for it and I only ever needed to put fuel in it maybe twice in that 10 months! Bless the use it and abuse it car! The Dumpits of this world deserve recognition ❤

My first car was an L reg 106 1.1 XN graduate (cat) 3 Dr. Dark blue with the graduate markings including pink stripe. It was very basic inside, it didnt even have a light in the boot, or a cigarette lighter. But, it was only £200 back in 2005 and had only done 73k, and still had MOT. It was a great first car and I loved every minute of driving it, even with the leaky heater matrix that would piss coolant over my left foot! 😅 I replaced it with a K reg 306 1.6 XR complete with beige velour interior..

In mid 2001 I was given an identical 106 Independence, but on a Y plate, as a courtesy car when my Xantia was in having accident damage repaired. Long story, but they managed to cock up the repair of my Xantia so I had the 106 for far longer than I should have done. Due to my general annoyance at them messing up my own car I absolutely thrashed their 106 for the whole time I had it, but it took it all totally in its stride and I grew to like it. It still managed to average 40 MPG even when driven with no sympathy whatsoever!

My dumpit was of all things, an AU Falcon. My sister didn't want to drive it any more, so after it sitting in the car port for 18 months, I threw a few dollars at it and got it running and roadworthy and registered and drove it for a year or two until the transmission finally cried enough (ironically after a service) and I sold it to the wreckers. A few years later I picked up a 97 Ford Laser (All 323 Protege underneath) with a few dents, threw a few more dollars at it and got it roadworthy, and drove it until we could afford something better. I do enjoy driving a car that you can park in a dodgy area, or in the shopping centre carpark, and have absolutely not a care if it picks up a dent or two.

Steering heavy when you are stationary, nobody needs to steer when stopped! As soon as you move even 1mph it gets lighter. Nobody used to move the steering wheel when stopped before power steering became universal...😂

Same as one of my two 106s!! Just mine’s a 51 plate xD. the independence came with painted bumpers, a rev counter and a driver’s airbag as standard. You could option stuff like power steering and a passenger airbag - though power steering did come standard in the latter half of 2002. mine has unfortunately gained quite a bit of the inner arch tin worm and is going for its MOT tomorrow so fingers are well and truly crossed (i don’t want to daily my Dolomite really)

Great stuff. Believe it or not, my daily is P 106 5 doors 1.1 of the year 2001. Great little car that I've had for 19 years now. I bought it of my grand dad. It was his last car. The car only seriously failed once when the headgasket blew and the engine was full of brown cream. I got it repaired. The play on the gear stick is a feature I suppose. I smiled when you demonstrated that. The seats in my car are the best. Nu hurting back even on longer commutes. And at 100kmh on the motorway it is lovely and quiet and extremely comfortable.

I do have a (perhaps misplaced) nostalgia for 106s. My Dad used to have a 1.5D 106 XR. My abiding memory is that it didn't like going more than 55 mph, and used to jump out of 5th gear on bumpy B-roads. To this day, I think a 1.4 petrol in the same trim level would be a perfect city car.

Around the same time as you got Dumpit, I got a Xsara Picasso 2.0 auto, being 74 I can't get into a lot of cars now but amazed myself by the fact that I can get into the back of this. It is the same colour as Dumpit, Love the clean, no nonsense, wheel in each corner look of the 106. I am on my 3rd or 4th Picasso and I persuaded my brother to get one as well, he has the more sensible 2.0 tdi, but despairing of finding anything to replace it he has just had new cills fitted. Reg number of mine starts KP and given the shape I have named it Peanut.

My brother had a low-spec 3-door 106, don't remember what trim exactly but I think it was a late Mk. I with the same engine. He upgraded to a Mk. I MR2 as he really didn't need more than two seats, and his girlfriend had a green 3-door Mk. I (lots of Mk. Is) Clio which could do the more practical stuff. He did miss the 106; he gave it to his girlfriend's brother who ended up not driving it due to, well... basically, he saw something bad happen to somebody and it put him off driving. A few years later, and I had obtained a white P-reg 3-door Clio, 1.2 RL Oasis, Mk. I (yay) phase 3 from 1996, one of the early ones. It had an extremely similar spec to Dumpit, except for some reason my Clio was lacking a radio - eventually remedied - and a rev counter. Renault, in their infinite wisdom, decided that the 1149cc D7F was a 1.2. Anyway, it had exhaust issues at the manifold end which, about a week after an "attempted" - read, majorly bodged - repair for the second time, the exhaust decided to make friends with the tarmac and give the car a whole new ambiance. It's theorised that the manifold was loose and this caused shearing of whatever bolts were left. The specialists who managed to fix it did say that performance would have been like lopping a cylinder off, which is painful given it had only 59 hp to begin with. Later in its life, the heater would occasionally pack in for no good reason, including one splendid day when it was 30 degrees and I was sat in traffic, also it would bog down horribly during a cold start, likely some sort of sensor. Despite these issues, it was the little car that generally could, and I have fond memories as a result.

It wasn't actually bad to drive, even on faster roads not terrible. Easy to park anywhere and you could fit a lot of stuff in it if you really wanted. Think these were made around the time that Peugeot were pushing their cars at new drivers so the package was the car with insurance. Ideal for first time drivers and I think it was on a range of cars they were pushing. Look in the handbook if you have one as people used to write the radio code in the cover. Failing that, can Doctor Google or you tube help with decoding it?

Moonstone blue too. 3 stud wheels, no power steering, wind up windows etc. It had the same tu1jp+ as yours. (Mine would have been one the very earliest with that engine). I had it for seven and a half years. I still miss it, it was a great little car. It looks a pretty clean little car. Ps. Mine had continental eco contacts on from the factory. 106? I'm in. Ages ago I once drove a bog-basic rental 106XN in and around Antibes. To drive it was as close to a Mini as you could get but it had room inside and a 5-sp box and you (I) could rev the nuts off it, unlike any A-series. I've never forgotten that drive or the 106, shame they rusted so badly.

Personally I'm more of a 205 and 306 guy, but I really do appreciate the 106 and Saxo. If for some reason my current modern daily would have to be replaced, I think I would do something similar actually. Buy a late 90's / early 00's car and see how long / cheaply it'll go (with proper maintenance though). At work we have similar dumpit kind of fleet car. It's a '95 Volvo 940 estate that has been in the company since new. It was a company car until somewhere in the early '00's. It has been handed down multiple times over the years. From company car, to short distance fleet car, to local maintenance workhorse and now it sits at 370 000miles as a backup car for on-site taxi services.

Lovely car in remarkable condition, fun to drive, low mileage and getting rare ... I love your dumpit philosophy - though I initially thought dumpit meant a car that wouldn't concern anyone if it got damaged / trashed ... and you may be a little more smitten by this car's ways than you expected! Hope the financial commitments in September are not too painful - while dumpit might be a low spec, I suspect it's more of an unexceptional modern classic than a banger! My 09 reg Kia Picanto (not the one in your video) doesn't have the luxury of a sunroof or rev counter, but does get electric front windows and power steering - along with such gems as non-central locking and manual mirrors that dumpit also boasts ... it's not got the dynamics of a 106 though!

wife had an Uno for 9 years and when it failed we got her a phase One 106 and she just didn't like it so we retreated back to the FIAT stable and got a Punto ........... if you factor in the cost of the cars and letting the 106 go cheap after buying dear was quite a financial hit at the time

I have never seen a cut quicker than the one after "Because it works." It so decisively precludes any reaction as to be a reaction in itself (can you tell I used to teach EngLit? But that was historical time ago.) Also, love the Dumpit idea: Dumpit's spirit animal is a donkey. 9:45 Plastic covers for headlights are a mystery to me. I had a Skyline--solid middle of the range exec saloon--and the covers clouded up every month. Now I have a cheap little Toyota (a Spade, which is practically a van) and the plastic is crystal bright. But I fear you are already too fond of Dumpit for it to be a Dumpit in the fullest sense of the word. I once had a strong Dumpit--a 1960s Mazda 1200. I eventually got something better and lent it to friends. One day it broke down on the motorway, and the driver had an appointment so she just abandoned it. Her husband and I collected it and towed it to the aging hippy backyard mechanic all their set used (married to a really good painter, actually). "Start it up" he said. "Stop it" he said. He looked and he looked and saw a big hole in the crankcase. They had managed to put a rod through the side of the world's most moderate small car. He started talking about second hand engines, and I had a moment of blinding clarity. "It's broken" I said; "Throw it away" I said. And I rang a car wreckers and gave it to them, and told them where to pick it up. I then got two parking tickets, as some really desperate hoons had stolen it, and then abandoned it. And then more desperate hoons stole it from there, and abandoned it again. I managed to get off the parking tickets, by telling my long sad story. But I do hope your Dumpit serves you well through your financial straitening.

I don't think I'm too attached, I'll deliberately leave some issues unfixed so I never fall for it! Dumpit is a badge that can pass from one car to another, like a monarch.

That interior brought back memories of my old Vauxhall Nova Antibes - white with a very blue interior and white wheel trims. It was my first new car and I thought it was brilliant as a trade up from my MkI Panda 45 in beige. Oh those days of innocent driving fun. But what was it with special editions and bright blue seats? Dumpit looks ideal for a certain festival though.

Quite possibly, yeah, although if history teaches us anything it's that the basic versions of popular cars take a long time to reach collectable status. When you've got so many 106 models ahead of this one, like GTi; Quiksilver; Rallye; XSi; Roland Garros and a fair few more, I think it'll be a a fair few years before something like this is ever worth much. Currently they're worth very, very little, on account of the fact that for a cheap car, they're not actually *that* cheap to run anymore.

My first car was a 2002 106 independence exactly the same as this except for the hubcaps. What you said about the low end torque matches my experience, I now own a 1997 model 1.1 and compared to what the 2002 model was like it's got hardly and low end torque, you'd really have to abuse it to spin the wheels dry or even wet. It usually just bogs down. But on the flip side, the 2002 one didnt seem to want to rev past 5.5K, whereas the 97 loves to rev (not sure what to there's no rev counter). Maybe they changed the cam profile, maybe it's the change from SPI to MPI, maybe its just broken. Same 60 horsepower apparently.

Always bemusing that no one knocked PSA for using the same old engines for 30/40 years like they did Austin Rover. Always amuses me to hear next doors C3 start and drive off with it's 104 Ancestry. Neat purchase there. Everything is better in basic form. Sometimes. 👍🙂

I mean, the TU engine was pretty different to anything used in the 104! But I think the reason is because PSA's engines were designed for the future, whereas a lot of AR's stuff was all older spec (e.g. push-rod OHV engines made of iron in the Metro, available at the same time as the TU; an all-alloy OHC unit). I get what you mean, but you have to concede most of AR's engines were dreadfully outdated until the K-Series came along.
