Less fuel being used means less of all of the emissions until the fuel gets to the pump from the ground which has to be a net benefit in my opinion but I don't have exact figures to back this up. honestly a real enviromentalist solution is actually good and accessible public transit but no government wants to shell out that much tax money on infrastructure that's going to reduce their tax revenues in the long run and cost a lot more then just building roads and taxing the fuel, cars and emissions. People buying expensive cars and fuel is good for the economy efficient mass transit isn't if it's an already developed country where people can afford cars relatively easily.

@@regbarnard2866 Its the high amounts of NOx that diesel produces that make it undesirable without the additions of systems like adblue that get it put on ULEZ. NOx is nothing to do with global warming really, but NOx is Toxic on it own, but can also lead to tropospheric ozone and acid rain in extreme cases. Central london had a real NOx issue, and that's why the ULEZ zone was originally introduced. I've done 44k miles in it, it's now on 142k miles. Obviously a smaller tank than the Passat but it still has a range of 650 miles on a full tank and averages 58mpg in mixed use and only £35 annual road tax. All it's needed is oil changes, tyres and brake pads. The belt was done just before I bought it and no issues with the clutch. It's worth £2k retail still - totally boring to drive but what a great car to run. You only need to look at what Uber/Minicab drivers use - the majority are VW Group TDis or hybrid Toyotas.

Since diesel engines rely on compression to ignite the fuel, warmer air can help achieve the necessary compression temperature more easily. This can lead to more efficient combustion. Reduced Fuel Viscosity: Diesel fuel tends to thicken in cold temperatures, which can make it more difficult to inject and atomize properly. In hot weather, the fuel remains more fluid, allowing for better injection and atomization. This improved atomization leads to more efficient combustion. Reduced Engine Warm-Up Time: Diesel engines take longer to warm up compared to gasoline engines. In colder weather, it takes more time and fuel to bring the engine up to its optimal operating temperature. In hot weather, the engine reaches its optimal temperature more quickly, reducing the amount of fuel consumed during the warm-up phase. Lower Air Density: While lower air density in hot weather might seem like a disadvantage because it means less oxygen for combustion, modern diesel engines often compensate for this with turbochargers. The lower air density can slightly reduce the intake air resistance, which can reduce the engine's pumping losses, thereby improving efficiency. Less Friction: Engine oil and other lubricants tend to be more viscous in cold temperatures, which increases internal friction and reduces efficiency. In hot weather, these lubricants have lower viscosity, leading to less internal friction and improved overall efficiency. Battery and Electrical Systems: Cold weather affects the battery and other electrical systems, making them less efficient. Diesel engines often require more electrical power for components like glow plugs, which are used to preheat the combustion chamber in cold weather. In hot weather, these systems are less strained, contributing to overall efficiency.

All engines get better fuel efficiency in warm weather, because hot air is less dense, so less fuel is required. Cold air gives more power, but less efficiency.

Wowowow!!! What a sensational video Joe! 🙌That makes my 400 miles on one tank in my C63 look weak… and you did that nearly 4 times over! 🤣 I absolutely love these sort of videos, and I cannot thank you, Patrick, Michelin and Elite garages enough for making it happen. My London to Edinburgh trip was minute in comparison, but the amount of planning you’d have to do is vastly appreciated and commendable. I genuinely thought the car had it past London, and then you started burning fuel for fun once surpassing your destination 🤣 I was so pleased you made it, but a little sad that these super frugal diesels have been shunted away, to make room for the EV agenda, whereas they could’ve invested this money into making diesels even more economical! Anyway, I am rambling and smashing job on the video Joe, I very much look forward to what the next fuel challenge could be! 🙏😁

Only talking about part of a tankfull in my case - and going by the car's computer - but I once managed to squeeze 95.2 miles out of a gallon in a mk3 Renault Clio DCI106 on the M1 in Staffordshire (north and back south through 40mph-controlled roadworks at night-time), my only ever real attempt at maximizing economy. In the real world of driving at normal speeds, I've gone from Dover ferry port to Corley Services (on the M6) on two gallons, just over 165 miles averaging just over 62mph (so no annoying truck drivers by sitting at 50mph AND including the traffic-heavy crawl to get through the Dartford crossing) GPS-authenticated distance and speed, on a Sunday afternoon/evening. This was not even the theoretical economy version of the car - the DCI86 - but a genuine testimony to the excellence of Renault's 1.5-litre diesel with a variable-vane turbo. The car just loved a motorway cruise - on any long trip it would magically go into a super-sipper mode after around 70 miles and it was never difficult to average 67mpg over 250 miles of decent motorway driving. The official average economy for this car was 61.4mpg, but I genuinely averaged more than 63mpg over 187,000 miles and 13 years of ownership By absolute contrast, nowadays I run a mk6.5 Ford Fiesta Econetic, which is supposed to be capable of 85mpg overall, but which has struggled to better 70mpg over 50000+ miles. It really hates motorway-speed cruising for economy purposes, even though it has taller gearing and the 1.6-litre PSA motor is less powerful - you would think that it might be better than the Renault when given an opportunity to earn its economy spurs, but no.... The same run as might easily get me 67mpg in the Clio now gets me only 63mpg in the Fiesta. The PSA engine is just primitive by comparison with the Renault engine. It's also a bit of a lemon by comparison - the DPF clogged up and I had to fork out on a turbo rebuild. Suffice to say that I won't be having any more DPF problems! So - why don't I still run a Renault? A very poor experience with a failed fuse box, nine weeks off the road waiting for a replacement (for a component which was reckoned to be a common failure item in the mk3 Clio AND which was a common part for all variants of the mk3 Clio, so presumably was manufactured in the many millions), hundreds of pounds spent on taxis to get to/from work, etc. Renault customer service - Nil Points! They lost a loyal customer in me - between my father and me there was no less than 58 years of Renault ownership in 14 different cars - and I will go to my grave without ever owning another Renault. That said - I will also never own another PSA-engined car, nor another Ford. The Fiesta is not only primitively-engineered, but also terribly uncomfortable due to too-hard seats that can't be raised high enough to provide under-thigh support and cause me crippling knee and ankle pains on a long journey. Cabin ergonomics are just awful for a car designed by one of the world's biggest manufacturers. Ford design - Nil Points! The only reason I haven't got rid of it is that I'm too scrupulous on the matter of inflicting this car on another owner - nobody else should have to put up with such a bad car - so I'll wear it like my own metallic hair shirt. Please - for the sake of anybody reading this - DON'T BUY A FORD FIESTA. If diesels are still available when I come to my next car, I will definitely head for VAG - I really should have gone that way at the time I acquired my Fiesta. Petrol? Thirsty no. Hybrid? - Expensive no. Electric? Heavy expensive inconvenient no. The EUrocratic hatred of diesel has ruined motoring.

Most likely making it consume plenty of petrol. Remember that yaris is heavy due to batteries etc. That small engine will need to work hard to get it running, sounds like a lot of petrol to me.

My Mrs drives it as her daily as I now have a company car. She regularly gets 800+ to a tank. She had a 2020 plate Kia stonic 1.0 TGDI 3 cylinder and that would only do 400 miles to a tank of 70 quid of petrol. She was filling it up twice a week costing hundreds. We got rid of it and I gave her my passat, she loves it, I fitted it android Auto as well. She only has to fill it twice a month, so about £240 a month in fuel as apposed to £140 a week. Plus she is also saving by not having finance on the stonic which was £265.00 a month. The Passats are great cars, just not the 1.9 TDi B6 BXE model that throws conrods through the block at about 100k. If you want to do this again btw, a Renault Clio mk2 with the smallest diesel is also ridiculously efficient, although finding a good one now is nearly impossible, plus you wouldn't be nearly as comfortable. Great video, Michelin tyres helped massively too I'm sure, always been a big Michelin fan.

Brilliant, I have a Passat CC 2.0tdi Bluemotion and have a bit of a heavy foot and I have enough speeding fines to prove it. It is such an effortless car to enjoy, without realizing what speed you are doing. Well done on an insane video.

Quite an interesting hypermilage challenge. Over here in the land of burgers and freedum, hypermiling challenges are popular among prius drivers. We don't get diesel powered cars like the euros do, so seeing this was quite fascinating.

92mpg, that's really good! Actually, we did something similar with my 1987 Vectra 1.7D back in 2002: From Burgos to Zaragoza (Spain) then to Bourges (through the Pyrénées) then Vannes (on nationals, I'm miser) in less than a full tank and a blinking oil indicator... And, yes, I did 130km/h on the A20 (it's up and down through Massif Central and it's free), and the Vectra could go well below 4l/100km at full speed on a dual carriage way (like it was running on diesel vapour, I did once 180km between Vannes and Brest on a half reserve during the strike in 2001, no refuelling possible, no jerrycan). My wife's Kadett 1.7D seemed to do even better (she ridiculed the Passat in speed), much below the official consumption (51mpg), and I never got even close to that with the 1990 Passat 1.6TD nor the 1998 Vectra 2L DTI on the same roads at lower speeds (the radars appeared in the interim). Nowadays, my Corsa 2011 CDTI doesn't get close to that (about 5l/100km, about 20km/litre) despite the difference in weight and lower speeds. I'm not sure how to explain old engines were working so well in top speed and consumption?

I'll be hyper miling my M4 to the Nürburgring in the next couple of weeks and then absolutely hyper flooring the throttle on the Nordschleife. Great video, what an impressive piece of engineering the 'modern' diesel engine. Had a small laugh at 110 miles remaining with a warning light for refueling. This is the actual range of some EVs

Another interesting aspect is that the car didn't take running out of fuel badly. Old Mercedes diesels had some valve to bleed air out of the fuel lines when you put in the first diesel again - no big drama but you had to lie on the back under your car to do this. In the 1990s, some cars needed genuine repairs and reboots after running out of diesel - so I remembered never to run out of diesel. Sometimes it's a good thing they don't make them like they used to any more....

Just a thought Joe if you did the same journey back to Morocco you'd probably break the world record because you're going down the curve of the planet 😊 I bet Patrick hadn't thought of that one 😂
