@@amazingmonkey886 Car and Jet technology have very different developments. A car from today will be in almost every way better than the ones from the 60s. An F35 and an F14, not so much- in fact, there are things that the F14 does much better than the F35 like speed and maneuverability. Even in terms of stealth, the US developed more stealthy jets in the 80s. Rocket, space, and aircraft engineering have not changed much since the 1950s when you compare it to automobile engineering. In 1969 the US landed on the moon, how much has the US space program developed since then?

Manual control is an advantage since it is immune from electronic jamming. This fighter actually looks perfect for dog fights which is needed for defending a land rather than attacking as does the US. I remember the time people saying Iranian ballistic missiles were Photoshop.... Now Iran has one of the most diverse and biggest arsenals in the world. Same as the Iranian drone inventory.

Tbh as an aircraft designer the intakes on the top with no s ducts is not a huge issue. They will be mainly shielded by ground radar, the more concerning issue would be boundary layer ingestion into the engine. Considering this is an issue that still plagues nations with far bigger budgets I would have to pull the bs card on this design.

Something tells me the intakes look like that because it might not be a supersonic jet. The engines may still be the Iranian Owj turbojet with afterburners but just like the mig17, those afterburners are just there for some extra thrust for better payload capacity for take-off and climb rate. Not really for sustained supersonic flight.

And apart from laughing on these military innovations just because of their Irani origin, I think the design of this jet is super cool. 👍 Iran is really creative and in terms of drones like Shahed 136 & Mohajer 6 are not only creative but also very effective.

They run a Chinese clone of a raspberry pi 2b but with only 2 a56 cores. The camera is 480p and can only pan 5 degrees, no gimbal or stabilizer. The lipo battery is the most dangerous part of the air roomba.

The advantage of losing a fly-by-wire system is that in the event of an EMP, whether generated from a nuclear detonation or otherwise, means that the pilot could keep flying whereas the control might be knocked out for other pilots depending on the protection of their aircraft!

Not keep flying, but able to perform a controlled glide to the ground instead of uncontrolled tumbling out of the sky. Every other computer controlled system in the plane would be knocked out, but at least the stick will still move the control surfaces.

Here’s the thing: if they go even further into the anhedral design, specifically making the wings hull wings, they’ll get a few advantages. Of those that I can remember off the top of my head: a) the ability to shield underwing external stores from radar and b) by using gull wings in conjunction with all-moving wing tips, one can eliminate the need for the vertical tail and rudders. Furthermore, all-moving wing tips can ease design complexity and reduce maintenance costs by moving all wing surface controls to the wingtips, which also has the added benefit of increased roll performance. This is a UCAV the pilot is there for the proof of concept and development. The camera pod is a test equipment used for flight test and development. Fo rthe serial production you can be sure it will be removed. The UCAV is a top hemisphere stealthy. It will be used to approach AWACS and fire a missile. It will fly in formation with F5s in an air to ground role. There is a posiibility that it will be able to take off from the lakes rivers etc in case the runways are destroyed by the enemy. Thus the intakes are where they are, over the wing. In that case the wing tips can be used for steering in the water. Since it will be used for ground attack it has to have combat survivability against shoulder fire missiles and AAA -at low level flight nothing is stealthy - so fly by wire is not an option. The intake are shielded by the wings against ground radar. The original version probably served as a glider for the proof of concept.

Hmm, when discussing the inlets for the engines, two things come to mind: First of all, yes, they are rather small, but so are the engines. And unless building am combination of RAM jet and conventional turbo jet/turbo fan with afterburner, small engines don´t require large intakes. Second, the hightend position of the intakes should be rather effective against ground based radar, since they can hardly be seen from below. Therefore, the designers might have had a higher interest in optimizing the stealth characteristics concerning ground radar compared to airbased radar systems. Finally, there was the question of why it might be wanted to be wanted to have a plane with the capability of using manual controls instead of a fly-by-wire system. First of all, this means that there is a high degree of redundancy and savety: A plane, that can be flow manually, will be more likely to survive once the electronics fail, e.g. when being hit by bullets or shrapnel or as a result of an EMP: not every country has EMP hardened electronics at hand. These two aspects of the design make me wonder, if the aircraft might be a ground attacker and/ or optimized of use in a conflict that includes nuclear weapons.

Again, the FBW system is only 1 of hundreds of systems in the jet. Unless this is just a reskinned pre-coldwar jet, an EMP will kill everything in the jet except the ability to control the glide to the ground. Not exactly helpful. But as you said, when the iranian electronics likely fail, the pilot would be able to still control what is left still functioning on the jet.

At least in race cars, We drivers like to avoid any drive by wire inputs as this increases the amount of feedback we get through the controls, allowing us to have a better feel for the car. I assume the lack of fly by wire controls on this jet is there for a similar reason. Giving the pilot a better feel for his aircraft and the air around him.

My question is, why would that be such a concern for the designers of this plane? Nuclear bombs are the only realistic source of an emp powerful enough to disrupt fly by wire. I would imagine all electronics would be useless making the fighter only good for landing or unguided gun runs and MAYBE un guided bombs or rockets if they also designed them to not need electronic control systems. Radar would fry i think too. IR and radar seeker heads in your missiles would be toast. But I guess if you can get the aircraft home safely it can be repaired and used again.

The wingtip pointing down is the same as wingtip pointing up on F-4. And albatross wing has been a concept for a long time. They could have gotten it from boeing, or not, because there's multiple ways to come to that, you can't know untill you ask them.

Interesting, as an aeronautical engineer I am not entirely convinced by the overall design. There are some aspects to this concept in that it at least gives countries venturing into this area of aerial defence a platform from which to build on. Right now, I think they are a good few years away from service.

Iran already sort of does have stealth jets, but they're unmanned, few in numbers, and fewer of them are actually armed with nothing more than air to ground weapons. Not to say they couldn't design a stealth fighter of their own, but it'll take a lot of resources and time to do so, even if they have technical assistance from China and Russia.

They both come in armed and unarmed configurations and are both probably flying over Ukraine right now in support of Russian troops. Most military drones use a lot of off the shelf equipment to reduce costs, since most military drones are meant to be disposable anyway.

One military expert of my country (i do not remember the name) said that the design of the jet's thrust nozzles (or what am i talking about, there are no nozzles at all) propably is catastrophic, he theorized that when turning afterburner on the whole aircraft would ignite because of the hot afterburner flames making contact with the aircraft's stealth paint.

Funny note, just after you made the comment about the manual control surfaces there was an animated shot of the plane taking off. In this shot a naca duct is clearly visible, these are theoretically low drag intake ducts(haven't seen a lot of experimentation). But why this is funny, particularly with manual controls is that these ducts don't work trans or supersonic. Which would limit the craft to about 600mph if that duct does anything important.

Flying without a computer requires an aircraft planform that is inherently stable. Stable is good for passenger airliners but, not for fighters. What Iran needs is Russian assistance to make the Qaher 313 become a reality and good enough to take to the Paris Airshow. Until people see it flying at the airshow and parked for inspection by VIPs, it doesn't count and doesn't matter. Iran was rightfully humiliated when they tried to pass off a R/C model as the real thing and a taxi test where the main gear had hidden electric motors to move it along. Iran needs a real propaganda victory with the Qaher 313. I have no doubt that what Iran and Russia come up with will be bigger and the engines covered with something more robust than the plastic fuselage around the exhaust. But, it MUST look like the Qaher 313 that was roundly mocked and now shows itself in Paris as the equal of, say, the Saab Gripen.

I actually like the airframe design but what doesn't make sense to me is the position of the intake. From the front you can see these rectangular profiles on the sides. This is where I would expect the intakes to be. The inlets are too small for a twin jet, they could work for a single engine design though. The airframe itself would work if this was rectified

can be for multiple reasons why its manual, but mostly for easy control when the airplane electric system is shut down but by an EMP can still control it manually also its cheaper for production. also not hackable .

1. The Q-313 will only be produced in UCAV unmanned variant so it will most definitely have a fly by wire system but a manned version will NOT be produced 2. The advantages of not requiring a fly by wire system are 1. A more durable platform against EMP, directed energy weapons & during system failures. 2. A cheaper platform if no fly by wire is installed. Not requiring a fly by wire doesn't necessarily mean you don't have one it just means you can fly the platform without one. The main disadvantage of not requiring a fly by wire means you had to sacrifice maneuverability to build such a platform. With the Q313 Iran wanted a Low Cost (Under $10M USD) Low RCS (stealthy) platform equipped with an internal weapons bay that would be both capable of PGM strikes & be used a as a mule for Iran's IADS. The Q313 uses 2 cheap engines that combined cost less than $1M, Iran also used off the shelf commercial avionics built around a composite sub sonic platform the reduced the aircrafts Titanium requirements and lack of an advanced radar also helped further reduced cost. With advancements Iran has had in AI and UCAV technology Iran feels no need to put a pilot in the craft allowing for further reduction in cost by removing a million usd ejection seat, cockpit gear & canopy. This could allow Iran to achieve a production costs below $5 Million USD on a far stealthier platform.

Their aircraft's lack of fly-by-wire computer control is not an advantage, no matter what they say. They haven't incorporated it into their jet because they don't have the expertise or (probably) the computer tech necessary to add it. Also, any claim of making the aircraft immune to EMP is ridiculous, because American combat vehicles reliant on computer control and netcentric warfare systems are hardened against EMP effect. If they're concerned about compromised operability due to EMP, it's only because, there too, their technology is lacking.

I'm no expert but here goes. FBW and other systems may be beyond their design capability and daily serviceability. What real good is a hangar queen when you need a sortie now. Using parts/engines/weapons that you trust and are available might make sense for a country that changes allies and enemies occasionally. The desire to have a new wave F5/MIG21 I can understand but can they pull it off? That remains to be seen.

No fly by wire serves two main purposes: 1. They're sanctioned which makes it hard for them to get components 2. If facing an adversary that has greater technological means analog controls are the safer bet over digital controls systems. ///they probbly dont want to see the flying version of Stux-net.

Because jet fighters are not piloted remotely. Drones are hacked typically by spoofing GPS and telling the drone that it is landing in friendly territory. A pilot inside the aircraft that controls the aircraft will not land simply because the control logic tells him to.

Could it be that the current version is just a new skin on an existing F-5 to make it a bit more lik F-14 but with some stealth? Yes, I know it's single tail vs twin tail, but it seems to make sense given what they have to work with, much like Taiwan's IDF looked like a weird mish-mash of F-5, F-16, and F/A-18 (with a dash of some Mirage jets in there) It's clear they don't have the avionics to make a true 5th gen stealth fighter, but can this this be even called 4.5gen? It's likely without radar as well, so it'd be CHEAP compared to a true 5th gen , much like F-5 vs F-14.

IMO, Emp is a threat. They expect to use it as a weapon of choice, and are building their future capabilities with that in mind. I say this because both the Soviets and the US published studies on it, and both came to the conclusion that if you wanted to wipe out the other, a few nukes at high altitude was all that is needed. The US Congress published a study decades ago that concluded 95% of the US population would die from such an attack.

An aerodynamically stable design does make sense, if you are lacking the capacities to develop fly-by-wire software, the avionics suite etc. In that case, anyone would try to close the gap, best possible, leaving headaches to the next generation, more time to catch up, included.

From personal experience manual flying is actually slightly better than computerised flying this is because the flying is more down to pilot skill and not AI. But for faster response in a battle situation computerised flying could or could not be delayed when a pilot inputs a manoeuvre this is because the competent has to translate it then input the move but with manual it’s done instantly

It's good for support close combat range. I believe it the best in this class. This fighter only needs a 100-meter runway and can fly at low altitudes to evade radar detection. Go ahead. But for fighter in the category of F22, F35, Su 57, Su 35, Iran should build bigger turbofan and new bigger size of Qaher 313.
