In the 90s there would be something like 175 spec script deals, scripts that werent based on an existing IP, per year. In 2023, there were 11. Meet Joe Black isnt really a spec script, its based on an old 1930s play. But the spec script thing just highlights how hollywood used to be much more willing to make weird movies, risky movies. A lot of them were bad, but you also got a ton of absolute classics out of it, and even more just decent quality movies. The 90s truly were a golden era for films.

This scene is brilliant. Not enough movies today can replicate this. And directors need to learn most of the work in this scene isn't in the dialogue, though it's great. It's the pauses, moments of silence, glances away, facial expressions etc that do the work.

@@utubeyelper One of the most underrated movies EVER. The critics just got hung up on the idea that 'Death coming for a vacation to Earth' was too ludicrous to contemplate and also that it was 'too long', so it ended up being a flop at the box office ($143M made vs budget of $90). The critics completely ignored great acting by Hopkins, Pitt, Forlani, Gay Harden, and Tambor; the amazing cinematography as well as a great soundtrack; and many subplots which were beautifully depicted and acted out. I saw it at a theater when it came out and today, It's one of the favourite films in my DVD collection.

Brad Pitt made it, but Claire Forlani didn't achieve the status she deserved. Her looks weren't like everyone else's, in an almost ethereal way, and her acting skills were just about on par with her co-stars. Her facial expressions could tell the story, like theirs. That's what really impressed me about her films.

I agree. The Thomas Newman music throughout is so much of part of the power of the movie - especially seen here as part of the "walkaway" clip, the second clip after the deleted edit of a non-coffee shop scene.
@kemperchafin7352Ай бұрын
That transition to between the two coffee shop scenes is at about 4:15 (beginning with "it's kind of a pro bono job"). Newman's "Walkaway" music starts at about 6:00.

Thanks for editing out the accident part. Man do I ever love this moment in this movie. I watched it for the first time the other day. I was like, "No, man, it's says 'Don't Walk', get outta there!!! You got a woman to marry and cherish!!!" Overall there were some serious theological problems with the movie, but as far as capturing the very essence of what it feels like to fall instantly in love with someone as if God destined you to be together, this captured it and reminded me of that feeling. Sadly, most people just hook up these days and coast into crap relationships only to break up later or be miserable for the remainder of life. The best thing is to put faith in the Lord, walk with Him, and wait on Him to bring you to your perfect partner while doing good. As for all the guys saying, "It's cause he's brad pitt", no, it's cause he's kind, and tender, safe, funny, caring, and well kept which means he takes care of himself. All that comes through from the dialogue exchange and his initial phone call with his little sister. Not to mention he's working 'pro bono' as a lawyer. I'd say this character was the most down to earth, real, and likable characters Brad Pitt ever played.

Lots of ingenuity in this movie with "names". The unnamed character Brad portrays puts too much cream in his coffee. Perfunctorily portrayed mirror image wise with Forlani's character. The Joe (Coffee) Black character is "coffee without" cream. - a pale reflection of the vivacious coffee shop character. The Anthony Hopkins character's name is William Parrish. He is going to die, and that's why "Joe" is there. It would not right to call him "Will Perish". They punched with script up over the best part of 20 years. I'm sure they giggled every time.

But at least I had one for a time who was honorable. This movie makes my heart hurt. Ms. Forlani is so lovely and quiet and peaceable.
