Kemi Ashing-Giwa, a second-year PhD student in earth and planetary sciences, uses her lab work on bivalves to investigate some of the reasons for the mass extinction event 250 million years ago that killed 90 percent of all ocean life. Then she pops open a Google Doc and, with ideas from the lab, begins to craft fantastical fictional worlds-and even a space opera or two.
