Oh boy, it's a long one!
Recently Allegorithmic held a texturing contest called Meet Mat 2 and I thought that was a great opportunity to jump back into Substance Painter 2019 and Substance Designer. In this video we recreate my original textures, which took 2 days, from scratch in a much shorter time. Along the way we will cover new Substance Painter 2019 features like proper displacement and realtime Subsurface Scattering in the shaders.
The Substance Live Stream with Kyle Horwood which helped me figure out making shapes and just really good general inspiration: • Substance Source lives...
In this first part of two we create the base ceramic material and the gold. Substance Painter Topics covered include:
-Disp & SSS in shaders
-Instancing Materials
-Working with UDIMs in Substance
-Blend Modes
-Making Materials
-Importing Resources
-Using Filters
-Texture Projection Modes
This tutorial is great beginners new to substance or people just starting out that want to see how assets are textured.
The second part will be uploaded in a few days and includes other topics like smart mask construction.

My name is Michael Wilde and I'm a professional VFX artist, I have been working in the industry for nearly 7 years and have worked on many Hollywood blockbuster films, including a couple of Oscar winners! I'm here to demystify VFX and try and teach what I know to others :)
I do Mari, Zbrush and Substance tutorials with at least one new one a month, sometimes more!

FAntastic tut Michael thanks! really helped me click with substance a lot more. A few Qs: I get that the textures output from designer are just surface color but why not export them as a package? Just unecessary in this case? I assume it takes longer on the compute side. It seems like substance doesnt allow scaling per udim, or allow for separate uvw per layer is that correct? Even though now we have multi udim available it still seems quite limited.

Yer I could have exported as a substance file for sure, it's been a while since I worked on this but from what I remember I just needed the single patterns rather than multiple channels to build materials so it was easier to export as an image that I can then add to my texture library for other projects too! And yer, unfortunately no individual UDIM scaling. If you need a few UDIMs at a different scale you could just copy and paste the material and change the scale then mask it to where you need it

I’m not sure I ever said this one was for beginners... that said, I talk through everything and I don’t think I went through anything particularly complex in this video so if you know the basics of how to use the software you should be okay
