Reproduction and livemass increase per available hectar while improving your available resource. As you have pointed out those ICP's are awesome and indicate adaptability , with that comes fertility. We will all be anxious to follow the developments and comparisons in your environment. The Nguni addition is very exciting. Your passion for cattle , objectivity and regenerative farming makes it even more exciting. All inspirational and informative, well done Shane . Thank you.

To some extent. I think that there might be a market for solid coloured animals in the Nguni market going forward. It also makes it easier to sell their calves if they of solid colour 🤣🤣🤣

Congratulations on your new heifers. It is really enjoyable watching you put your herd of cows together and learning your reasons and hopes for each breed. Are the incalf Nguni heifers at their fully grown mature size and weight. The brahma heifers seem to be as big as the 2 year old Nguni heifers
@shanecotty3275
@shanecotty3275 Ай бұрын
Thanks and it's good to hear from you again! The heifers are not yet fully grown as they are only 25 months old. They will be significantly smaller than the brahmas at mature weight as they are quite smaller framed. But this is what makes them more suitable to the tough conditions. Going to be interesting to see how they compare later down the line. Cheers! 🍻

I personally like the variety. In the book I am working on they main character lives on a farm and has several different breeds. I like what I am seeing about the Nguni. I believe I will add that breed to the mix as long as they can be found in the setting of the US that has low temperatures in the winter and hot temperatures in the summer.

Hi Jill, Wow that's amazing! You can most cerainly include the ngunis as we have breeders where the animals walk in snow in the winter - and the temperatures get to over 100 fahrenheit in the summers. In fact there is already a large number of the nguni ecotype (mashona) already in the states. Good luck with your book and let me know when it hits the shelves!

When you bring new cows 🐄 in your herd do you give them medicine 💊 or quarantine?

Hi Sandile, Technically one should quaratine them... But I did not in this case as they came from a clean, healthy herd.

Greetings Shane am I FARM in the North West with BORAN / Bonsmara and BramanX I really love what u doing in you farm great experiment will you consider ur Tuli Bull to walk one of ur Nguni’s? Or he is strictly for Simbra and Tuli cattle type you got a nice headache to worry about. Above all best of luck
@shanecotty3275

Hi Tebogo, I will most certainly let the Tuli bull service the Ngunis at a later stage. I first want to increase the number of pure ngunis so Basjan will get the first round!

Interesting to watch how this experiment pans out. Never really thought much about African brands coming from a Simental stud background with a 250 head Hereford/Simental commercial herd producing grass fed young cattle into the local fresh meat market, from highly improved and irrigated pastures, through a rotational cropping program. Did appreciate how big cattle theft was there? Did it increase when the blacks gained the power, along with crime in general. We always hear bad stories here about black crime in SA.

Maan!!! I love your work . One day i wish to visit your farm just for inspiration. I'm a young farmer myself though on Communal land. I relate on your journey in cattle farming. Nguni’s take long to mature , I know you’re looking for hardy animals. in my humble opinion you must be a business man before becoming a farmer. How long will this investment start paying back?
@shanecotty3275
@shanecotty3275 Ай бұрын
Why do you say that? They often calve at 24 months(early sexual maturity) and it's one of the main reasons that the feedlots discriminate against them - they fatten too quickly.
