Meet my Roommates at Uni, Room Tour and Minerva Traditions: Ukrainian

Meet my roommates in the first week I arrived (this is MAD for me to watch because I've become so close with them now! Enjoy the cute awks vlog hehe). I take you on a bit of a room tour, Minerva kitchen tour and to the Ukrainian 10:01, a Sunday tradition where all the students from a certain country share their culture with our cohort :)
Shoutout to Phuong and Ada and the beautiful people in this community!! I love 'em 🤧 it's so much fun being the only British gal in this crazy international community 😌
also just want to clarify that in the kitchen we have some banter for which context isn't really explained. people make jokes about me being a coloniser because I'm British, and it's chill because they know I can take it, we're all aware of the actualities of history etc. But I don't want anyone to be offended or think we're being insensitive through mentioning it! Colonisation screwed up many many many things. It isn't lighthearted, even though our banter mentions it in this context. okay. note made. enjoy! x

You'd be surprised! A good portion of us (I'd say even most!!) are actually introverted in nature😊 But that doesn't mean they don't go out and interact and form meaningful bonds. Everyone just goes about it at their own pace and quite literally everything works, so long as you're willing to put in the effort😁 it's not only extremely diverse in culture, but just about any metric you can measure a human

Chretien li i believe that 100%. I also love to go out and meet new people and stuff, but not having your own space... maybe that’s also my social phobia. I tried to live in a dormitory some time ago and i literally starved myself so i didn’t have to see people🤦🏻‍♀️ but i can see how much fun it is and how much you can learn about other cultures and yourself during this time😍

everyone asking about privacy when sharing a room: I go to a different university in the US so my experience could be different, but I think what most people find is that 1) your roommate(s) is/are not constantly in the room so there are times when you have it to yourself, and 2) you can always find somewhere else on campus to have alone time. There are lots of spaces like quiet corners in the library, designated study rooms, outside if weather permits, etc where you can recharge. It is somewhat of an adjustment to live with someone else, but even though I'm a strong introvert I've found I actually quite enjoy it because I am always able to choose whether I'd like to socialize or be alone- there are options for both depending what you seek out.

In the past when there is only 1 person from that country they would recruit other students to help cook for the 10:01, but that 1 person would be in charge of deciding what food to buy and teaching people how to cook it. Also sometimes when there are enough people from neighboring countries that have similar food they will do a 10:01 for their geographical region, for example, the third 10:01 this year in San Francisco was a Caucasus 10:01 (2 from Armenia, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Azerbaijan) and they still had a lot of people helping them cook and prepare their 10:01.

yes living in a dorm style accommodation is not a good idea. Normal universities give you your own room etc which I think is better. Dorm style accommodation is just so chaotic and would not suit me but each to their own

Yaaaas, I finally caught up watching your recent vids, this and your week at uni video and do you know what? YOU GO GIRL, hectically hecting around, Jade, with your such an outstanding outlook on life and work ethic all of this will pay you out for sure)))). This September I started the IB at United World College in Maastricht (the Netherlands). My year consist out of people from all over the world as well, and everything that you said like I can relate to it so much. It makes me really happy to see how the same experience, though a different setting, is impacting other people and it is so nice to hear someone else outside of my school say the same thing as what I'm experiencing, because it really is an amazing thing being in an environment with people from all kinds of backgrounds and nationalities coming together for the same thing

Jade! I also decided to do a study abroad and went from my little town in Ireland to a Completely international cohort in the netherlands. It is so amazing to be amongst the different languages and cultures. Best decision I ever made. I'm back home for halloween right now but feeling so much gratitude for my international family. Uni seems so much like school in terms of banter and everyone getting along! A lot of people are saying that it looks like such a small room to share with 2 other people, but in America, that sized room with 1 or 2 other roommates is pretty normal. Yeah there are accommodations a some universities where you can live alone and/or have an ensuite bathroom, but most of American university freshmen have a 1 or 2 roommates and share a communal bathroom.
