Meet Mylo: Vegan Leather Made From Mushrooms

Material solutions company Bolt Threads created a vegan leather made out of mycelium, the fibrous root structure of mushrooms. The product, Mylo, is being used by companies such as Adidas, Lululemon and Stella McCartney to create more sustainable fashion. NBC’s Sarah Harmon reports for TODAY.

The idea of sustainability and fashion simply don't mix...at least not on the scale it has been for the last 300 years. Plastic microfibres are turning up in watersheds and aquifers, the chemicals produced by textiles are also horrible, although it's the countries that don't know how to properly dispose of them that hurt the most. The idea of mushroom leather is great, but not where it should be in terms of impact. The reporter hits the nail on the head around the 5 minute mark when she suggests slowing down consumption and sharing clothes, but lets face it, not many people want your skinny jeans anymore. It's the fashion industry itself that needs an overhaul more than textiles. We need more clothing that's built to last or that is biodegradable; we shouldn't have to worry about what is 'in style'.

It seems like mycelium leather may also be the perfect way to encapsulate technology in a seamless waterproof container with potential for sensors, like skin for androids. That's interesting for a future of companion androids and requires further research.

I’d rather buy leather because: A - it is a byproduct of the meat industry, a product that would otherwise go to waste B - it will last twice as long, I’d rather put one pair of shoes in the garbage than 2 or 3 in the same amount of time C - There is an unnecessary amount of poly plastics that are added to vegan leather

Oh yeah, way to go! Create a sustainable, economical product and then sell it exclusively to multi million (billion?) dollar fashion conglomerates who are most certainly going to mark up these vegan and sustainable products 1000x their cost. Yay! to the product, boo! to the marketing.

Thank god!! No more plastic!! And no more animal products!! They need to make sure it doesn’t harm the environment when degraded. Also spider webs exploit spiders so not a good solution. But buying LESS is super important as well!! Very good point at the end.

Leather is a natural by-product of the meat industry. Leather good manufacturers are the reason the hides of various animals are not piled into huge waste which would be burned and effect the environment. We create beautiful products with hides - which makes the leather products sustainable. In the process we help in circular fashion. On the other hand "Vegan Leather" is actually plastic which will never be as sustainable as Genuine Leather. Using PU and calling it Vegan Leather just effects the image of Genuine Leather Products. There is no such thing as "Vegan Leather".

did you not listen to the video at all? sure there are unsustainable vegan leathers made from plastics, but this mushroom leather is a great, way more sustainable and cruelty-free alternative to animal skin and synthetic leathers. i don’t get why you’re so mad about this, if less animals have to suffer and the planet isn’t burdened with unsustainable synthetics, then that’s a reason to cheer for everyone. leather is not just a harmless by-product, it’s another reason why inhumane livestock farming continues to exist and by buying it, you finance this cruelty. a lot of people don’t want that so they prefer vegan leathers, even more so now that they can be made from mushrooms
