The way they’re speaking doesn’t sound natural. Sounds like they’re reading a prepared script or memorized a script. How can this be a language speaking competition if they’re not going to speak naturally?

Scripted news? Like CNN

No shit they're on live TV What do you think news reporters and TV interviewers just go without any form of prepared script?

I would love to work with hard working people like this. To be fair, if i had to debate in Korean, i don't know how well i would do in contrast. It's pretty clear on other English speaking videos from the DPRk, they are learning from British or English from the Commonwealth nations.

To be frank, it seems like they're trained in English, but their arguments were super unnatural due to the very odd topics given at hand. Yes I think it's good to give these sorts of hard hitting questions to really get your brain going, but if it goes to the point of asking a non native speaker "which is better, ice skating or roller blading?" Expecting them to answer that type of stuff will actually lead to more unnatural results as those sorts of conversations can genuinely be unnatural if you yourself don't consistently do both or have a really deep comprehension of English. They argued in really technical points or quite clearly struggled to find words. So at some point judging them on such an odd topic almost becomes unfair at that point.

of course, they'll all work in either intelligence or diplomatic affairs. So they're part of the elite already.

Quite an involved topic at the start there. But clearly Chinese and English are disimilar languages, don't know why she got the short end of the stick to read that script and argue that.

This is so weird but they're intelligent and trying hard and it shows. They should unify Korea.
