Cincinnati Bengals director of college scouting Mike Potts joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the Bengals 2024 draft class.
The Bengals had a very successful 2024 draft, filling their biggest needs with players they believe will have an immediate impact on the 2024 season. They keep their same successful formula, drafting players with elite athletic scores from big-time programs.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Bengals drafted what they hope to be their right tackle of the future with Amarius Mims (Georgia). They also added C Matt Lee (Miami) in the 7th round who had the highest PFF score of any center in the draft this year. With their 3rd-round pick, they selected WR Jermaine Burton (Alabama) who has first-round potential but off-the-field issues dropped him lower in the draft, hopefully, he will be an upgrade at WR3 after Tyler Boyd departed after 8 seasons. In the 4th & 6th rounds, they drafted two tight ends; Erik All (Iowa) and Tanner McLachlan (Arizona). Both played at very high levels in college and make the Bengal's tight end very versatile coming into the 2024 season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bengals drafted two defensive tackles Kris Jenkins (Michigan) and Mckinley Jackson (Texas A&M), both were great players in college and will look to fill and surpass the role of DJ Reader. In the 5th round, they selected CB Josh Newton (TCU) who was a projected 2nd-round pick until the draft process where he fell a bit on draft boards. They also added a pair of Ole Miss players with explosive edge player Cedric Johnson and safety Daijahn Anthony.

Burton seems to have some seperation skills while the ball is in the air if he's even he's leaving type of stuff!!! Him & Jenkins really grew on me as soon as they picked them. 🔥 Mims 🔥 he is who I wanted the whole time WHO-DEY!!!

if all these rookies play up to their potential…… Bengals will be deep, fierce, full of leaders and will be hard to beat down the stretch if they stay healthy and get some momentum going.

I believe putting a guy at 1 position and letting him develop into the best player he can be at it before moving them all over the place now been versatile is better suited for backups sometimes moving players around the players can't get comfortable

DT McKinley Jackson is getting slept on to me. I'm seeing a little BJ Hill in him. That would be a pretty big upgrade over Tupo & Carter to me. I love this draft, I'm always optimistic but I love the fit of this class to the team. I'm not completely counting out Carter he reportedly got stronger last offseason maybe he'll put it together but I'm higher on Mckinley then I was on Carter when they drafted him. Carter seemed like a pass rush projection.

I've always wondered if murphy was there and mims who would have been the pick or alt or other tackles

Looking more at Jermaine tape, he looks like Ja’Marr Chase Junior. Crazy thinking he may be able to do similar work like Ja’Marr.

Jermaine is a special player who has been training with former Bengal player, TJ Housh (WR, 2001.) Scuttlebutt is TJ talked to the Bengals about Jermaine. Find it interesting that TJ Housh introduced Jermaine's selection during the 2024 Draft.

Like Josh Newton a lot. This player was another steal. Tough, tough player ... very physical and football smarts to boot. He played Corner. He reminds of a big cat who stocks his opponents. The jungle is his turf!

Another sleeper is Tanner McLachlan. Boy, does this player have a "Rudy" football story! Born in Canada, he first attended a Canadian College, transferred to So Utah, and get this, was a walk-on at the University of Arizona! He then earned a scholarship for his performance on the field while playing there. The probably that Tanner, a Canadian and a walk-on would ever make to the NFL is so minuscule that it is comparable to a Quark, the smallest particle known to exist in the universe! So how did he pull it off? Well, He is big: 6'5," 245lbs. He's fast, and he can catch. He finished his career at Arizona with 79 receptions which BROKE Rob Gronkowski's school record for career receptions by a TE! Like his predecessor, Gronk, Tanner is a big target with great hands. He had the third highest receptions on the team for a total of 528 and average yards of 11.7. Tanner said his parents would go to Arizona to escape the Alberta cold and while there he saw an University of Arizona football game. He came away from that game with the improbable dream of someday playing for Arizona ... he just didn't know how he was going to do it; or when he'd be able to do it. But somehow he did and has now landed himself a spot on the NFL Bengals' team. My perdiction: This player is a gift and will contribute mighty to the versatility of the Bengals and control of the middle of the field! Keep your eyes on Tanner McLachlan!
