This gentleman used the word "fishes" this solves the age old question of whether you can refer to many types of fish as fishes. I asked my english major friends and they said there is no such thing, its still just "fish" but Neil deGrasse Tyson said there is. I trust this man because he studies FISHES he definitely has the proper understanding of what plurals to use when referring to them.
@nitsuaasemed15053 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on context. Like in a scientific setting and with reference to different species of fishes, then fishes is the way to go. But if it's in general, fish is still fish in plural. In conversation though, just say whatever your mind thinks first. It doesn't really matter haha. Nevertheless, the word "fishes" does exist.
@WingMaster5623 жыл бұрын
A living language changes. A word is only valid if majority of people agree on it, same goes for it's meaning. So fishes or school of fish are valid depending on whom youre speaking with.
@thanhavictus3 жыл бұрын
Fish is paraphyletic. That's the easiest way to put it
@Utgardaloki763 жыл бұрын
This age old question of whether you "can" say something like fishes in stead of fish is no more than academic self-indulgence and more often than not proclaimed by people that know close to nothing of how languages work. The language belongs to and was invented by what ever people that speaks it. If a native speaker of what ever language uses the plural fishes in stead of fish then fishes it is for that person. There is nothing intrinsically or functionally wrong with that. Within linguistics pertaining to the usage of the language there is only one true mistake that can be made and that's the breakage of the linguistic code belonging to that language. If one happens to say horses when meaning fish(es) then an actual mistake has been made since it leads to a break in communication. That's an actual linguistic mistake. Some academics don't agree with this notion but that is a case of authority. Not of actual linguistics. Linguistics is the study of how (native) speakers speak and use their language. Not the act of telling people how they "should" speak. In Old English there is only one plural of the word fish in all senses. It's fishes (fiscas), not fish (fisc=singular). That doesn't mean that the modern alternative plural fish is wrong. It simply means that what ever plural native speakers use for fish is the right one even though it may vary. Despite what ever made up standards might imply. In modern scientific use (which doesn't necessarily coinside with actual native speaker use): many fish = many individuals of fish many fishes = many species of fish So if you have a fish tank containing five fish of bass and five fish of pike then the tank contains ten fish as well as two fishes... scientificly speaking. How you as a native speaker choose to express that is ultimately up to you.

Just a question. Why did that fish didn't evolve even just a little in 65 million years ago?..
@johnwoa3 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, the Coelacanth is considered the evolutionary "missing link" between fish and humans. Living in deep water off the coast of East Africa and in an apparent protected environment (e.g. caves/caverns), the Coelacanth escaped the destruction caused by the asteroid that struck the Western Hemisphere (Gulf of Mexico region) 65 million years ago that wiped out the dinosaurs on Earth. Literally "left behind" by the complete asteroid destruction, the small concentration of Coelacanths continued to live without evolving and the first living specimen was discovered off Madagascar in the 1930's.
@Noob-fp7jn3 жыл бұрын
@@johnwoa yeah but I thought evolution is triggered due to the environment and I don't think that earth didnt change . Maybe it couldve had evolved some extra features within 65 million long years. Is it in it's final form that it didn't need to evolve more ?
@phoenicianathletix28663 жыл бұрын
Some species dont have to evolve to because they're already endowed with necessary attributes to survive future environmental challenges. That fish could climb out of the water inside the pockets of deep sea caves like in the last Godzilla film were the guy detonated the nuke. That fish could access more oxygen in those cave pockets while other species died from the release of harmful gaseous vapors of the impact of giant objects crashing into earth that theoretically killed dinosaurs

Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer deserves credit for recognizing that, among the catch of the day, that fish merited particularly close examination. Courtenay-Latimer, the curator of a museum in the port town of East London (northeast of Cape Town), was a friend of Captain Hendrick Goosen, of the trawler Nerine, who regularly invited her to check out the boat’s catch for any unusual specimens, upon returning to port. She was called to meet the boat on 22 Dec. 1938. Looking over the pile of fish on the deck of the Nerine, what would eventually be identified as a coelacanth caught her eye, and she knew it must be something special. So, the fisherman deserves our gratitude for having been generously helpful in accommodating scientific research. But in any meaningful sense of the word, Courtenay-Latimer •did• discover the coelacanth. Had she not picked out that specimen for closer study, the fisherman wouldn’t have written a scholarly monograph on it; he would’ve just sold it for fish sticks.
