The float inside the back bowl of the carburetor may be stuck in the open position or have failed, or the needle valve the float controls may be leaking by the seat. Replacing the needle valve should be done first; as it is usually easier and cheaper than replacing the entire float assembly. There is a large "screw" on the top of the back bowl. Loosen that screw and remove it; the needle valve will be therewithin. After you replace the needle valve you will have to adjust it to ensure the bowl remains filled to the desired level. Examine that "screw" carefully, and you will notice it can be "adjusted". There will be a window or another screw on the side of the bowl. If there is a window, "adjust" the screw on top until the gasoline level is just at the base of the window. If there is a screw in lieu of a window, remove the screw and adjust the first screw located on top of the bowl until the fuel level in the bowl is just below the second screw hole. If replacing the needle valve does not solve the problem, then you will have to remove the associated float and check/replace it. There are four horizontal screws holding the back bowl on, they are on the backside of the back bowl. Remove them and you will see the float therein. The float may be hollow, but in any case it must be capable of floating in the bowl of gasoline. When the bowl is full to the desiered level, the float will rise and shut the needle valve so gas can no longer enter the bowl. Good luck, let us know how it goes!!!

Float's stuck on the carb. It's a Holley carb, so it's easy to access. There's four screws holding in on, (and since it's a four-barrel, there's a float in the back, which looks like the one that MAY be stuck, so pull the one facing the rear first.)

gac914: could it have anything to do with the ethanol in the gas? Not sure if the earlier Holly carb components were designed for it. Even 10% can cause major issues in older carbs.

Any open vent carb will have issues with ethanol when it sits.. Startron has worked the best for me... It's an enzyme that eats the ethanol varnish...

Take the radiator cap off and drive a HEMI under it!!! The float inside the carb is not shutting off the fuel. The float may have a hole it but likely the needle and seat need replaced. Go to NAPA and get a carb kit for that beast.

Pritchard Service is absolutely right. Don't keep trying to start the truck until you get the carb fixed. You are dumping raw gas right into the engine. Just get a carb kit and carb cleaner and rebuild it. It should take a backyard mechanic about 2 hours or so - a professional less than an hour. Try to avoid ethanol in any older vehicle and small engine. Ethanol will slowly dissolve seals, gaskets, and fuel lines in any engine not designed for it. The residue will, in turn, clog carburetors (among other things) causing things like stuck floats. Sorry to say to corn farmers in Nebraska, but ethanol is not the boon to mankind it is cracked up to be. It is too late for Stabil or Sea Foam although they may help delay problems in the future. Love the channel. Grant, you are a lucky guy. Laura is the most positive, upbeat, happy person I have ever known of. 'Course Grant is a pretty nice guy himself, so pretty good match up!!!

Just a thought It's been a long time... and this is just an opinion... nitrophyl floats....they don't like ethanol blended fuels. The floats (both of them) develop a leak, and fill the bowl full of fuel. So they sink to the bottom of the bowl, then the needle and seat reacts to the fuel level as too low, and it kept pumping more gasoline into it until eventually it has no choice but to come out the vent tube. I'd take the transfer tube & fuel bowl off. Reassemble on workbench. Blow regulated air (7 psi) through the transfer tube, into the fuel bowl using a rubber tipped blow gun. Check the needle & seat valve for leakage when float is up, and check for airflow when float is down. I would also give it a Oil Change as well after the repair ( oil might be contaminated with gas)

As others have said the rear float is stuck, if the truck has been sitting for any length of time you should have a complete carb rebuild. and keep gas stabilizer added to the gas. I was an ASE Master Technician and worked on lots of carburetors.

I love the scenery shots, my family is from Kansas, and we used to go out there from VA every couple of years. I miss the Midwest. I drove my sons out to KS to see family this summer and lived the drive through the country. Also, everyone is so much nicer out there then here on the east coast!

That’s a stuck float. But that is a huge fire risk. Burned up my engine with on of those. Keep a fire extinguisher handy when you start it.

if you tap the carb all around float area you might get it to be unstuck! Most likely just rebuild it...

maybe take the front filter off the carb and tap it to get all the junk out - if problem get a new filter - and if a lot of rust might look for a new gas tank and i was think as a new truck they do make a ford nugget camper that i would have custom extended and electric powered for summer and winter dont forget the tow package and 4 wheel drive - that is just out side of the box

Just keep tapping on the bowl housing in the back with the handle of a screwdriver, not too hard. It will seat eventually. Need to let it run for a long while and get it flushed out. Rebuild takes a couple of hours for someone who knows carbs well if you want to go that route. Great seeing you guys, need more BB Ford action please!

The float is sticking tap on it with a small hammer (tap) Buy a bottle of lead additive and mix your gas. The lead lubricates and ther old Ford will love it. This is a simple fix. If you want more info im always watching! Good luck

In the market for a truck... Brand matters, but more importantly, get at least a 3/4ton truck or don't even bother. A half ton truck is basically just a car and has no use on a farm. Nice merch designs!

In carburettor their is chamber with a float , float will rise in chamber when fuel enters into chamber ,, then when the float rises higher as fuel in chamber it contacts a plastic needle to cut off the fuel entering possibility :- The float could have pinhole in it and taking in fuel in float , making it less buoyant , so float being less buoyant as fuel in chamber enters, will not rise high enough to contact the plastic needle to cut off the fuel so with needle not doing its job from cutting off the fuel to prevent flooding will flood the carburettor chamber with fuel , hence then pour into engine chamber to cause flooding and engine will stop , cut out stay safe all the best from UK

May need to replace the float. But I would check the needle and power value. It might be easier to get a rebuilt kit and go through the whole carb. And make sure to put an air filter on it to keep trash out of it.

time to get out some tools and dig into the fuel system.Biggest problem is that it has a Holley carb(I don't care for them) but they can be made to work again. , but the float mechanism needs attention, its not stopping the flow of fuel at the proper level.

The float on the secondary side is sticking in your carb it is stuck or it has sunk.
