It really is a just the font/color in the thumbnail playing a barely noticable small trick on many of our eyes, but it has given me a new headcanon as to why Bruce had to make sure he always had pants that never tore specifically at the crotch, as well as new completely wrong and immature reasons to laugh at the phrase "HULK SMASH!"

River Lovell I mean I haven’t really ranked my hulks but I’d am both She-Hulk and Doc Samson have a lot going for them so it comes down to personal preference more than them being good or bad characters. Like some characters are badly written and you have to look past that to like them but both or them have defined personalities and different enough circumstances from the hulk to stand on their own.
@samwilson9781

I recently read his first appearance, and I agree with your view on Samson. Some fans thought it was bad writing/decision-making on Bruce's part, but the man had to have been traumatized during the years spent as the Hulk. Banner went from being hunted by just about everyone to completely ignored. Samson should have been focused entirely on Banner once Betty was cleared. We still have an MCU version of Samson waiting to get an origin story.

I first learned of Doc Samson when he was a side character in X-Factor for one issue. He had a session with each team member. We got little of him, but got a lot of character depth from the team. I think he is a little underused in the Marvel Universe, considering he could help heroes and (imprisoned) villains and won‘t get killed the first time a superpowered patient acts up. Sadly this won‘t get better because of the static nature of superhero universes

My favorite doc Samson appearance was the time he separated the Hulk from Bruce Banner (The first time he did it), and then he went out to fix the problem he caused. Well the Avengers had the same idea and they sent Iron Man, Wonder Man, Hercules(?), and Namor to also try to stop the Hulk and they jump Samson and he throws them around like a rag dolls. Not two panels later Iron Man it's like why should we let you go after the hulk, "after all ,we're all more powerful than you". The little kid me was like " but are you" ?

Great vid, as always, I didn't know Lenny's full origin, so this was pretty good to know. Thanks you so much for the great content. I didn't learn about Samson until I really got into comics in late 80s, and Hulk had just turned from Grey to his "Professor" phase. Peter David really expanded on the whole psychology of Banner, and used Samson as a Therapist should be used (Although anytime he tried his hand at some sort of heroics, it usually ended badly for the good doctor). I loved that in Hulk 393 (30th anniversary issue) there was a paper on Banner's personality disorder/history, written by Samson (David Obviously), I love insights into characters like that.

I am a big fan of this story line and Doc Samson, I think they hit all the notes right of how an at first a boring side character can matter over time (which is one of the great thing about the whole form) and how, then, a character who matters as a man of science--medicine--god gifted but otherwise worldly and arrogant--can rise so as to become a classic arch villain--or, in some better minority of cases--an unlikely hero like the man Dr. Stephen Strange was before the accident. But that at that point that character achieves its "legend." So I love that old tale. Thanks for reminding us of it.

Sampson is also the one that combined the Hulk/Banner personalities into one for the combined Hulk that would later be the "Professor" personality. (Should have been permanent growth of the character instead of another Hyde moment) He had the help of a Hypnotist villain to do it.

Love the character after they made him first Hulk's and then the superhero community's therapist. Wish he'd appear more. Hate that they took away his strength being tied to hair length.

I remember reading this when Doc Sampson was introduced- good times. If you want to focus on another somewhat obscure Hulk villain, how about Tyrannus?

3:28 As much as I didn't like Full Evil Sampson from the Red Hulk/Death of the Hulks run, I did like the idea that a lot of the math on the Cathexis ray was done by AIM. The "Colleagues" mentioned here 4:18

(I think I deleted this comment, but apologies for any duplication...) Hi. I discovered your channel back in March, and I’ve working my way through your episodes, from oldest to newest. I’ve finally made it to the present. Casually Comics is one of the most entertaining channels on KZbin, so thanks for your posts. Now, I’m old - not as old as the Ancient One, but old enough to have read this issue when it was first pubbed, and I was in high school. So, because I’m a geezer, I remember when Herb Trimpe was first introduced in a “Bullpen Bulletin” with the words: “Happy Herb Trimpe, rhymes with ‘blimp-y’”. Decades later, this pronunciation was confirmed when I became friends with a barista at my (then-) local Starbucks. We only ever saw each other at that Starbucks, and I only knew her first name. A couple years later, when I was moving away, she gave me contact info that included her last name - Trimpe. She was surprised when I pronounced it correctly, but I told her that there was a comic book artist with that name, and the whole “rhymes with blimp-y” thing and she said, “Oh, that’s my Uncle Herb. He’s my dad’s cousin.” The more you know… Keep up the great work.

Thank you for this show. Next to Hulk vs the Thing this was my favorite. I must confess I was 11 and I never read them but only looked at the pictures. And the drawing of the Hulk was perfect. Samson really caught my eye as well with his build and the flashy suit..Just looking at some of the pictures again had brought back memories and feelings I haven’t experienced since I first saw the comic. And your a great host so it was very entertaining. Thank you again.

Hulk's being a giant is a more recent development. He was about the same height as most other superheroes when I was reading him tin the 1970s.
