The best time to look for wolf spiders is actually at night. If you hold a flashlight at eye level, you can see their eyeshine several feet away. In a suitable habitat, it will look like the ground is strewn with glittering gems. Larger wolf spiders, like those in the genus Hogna, will generally have a brighter eyeshine.

Jack hit the nail on the head with the coloration: that truly does look like a gray wolf in spider form. I’m from North Carolina, wolf spiders are predominant and very cool. At that size, she truly does behave like a tarantula: very docile, super chill. I’ll keep on saying and thinking it: Jack, you are a modern day American Steve Irwin. We all love and appreciate your work, thanks for continuing to go out and provide excellent content! Always a loyal subscriber. I will say about the wolf spider, they will bite. They’re numerous in our basement and I know now to appreciate them, especially after coming back home from extended time away from my family. But I remember one time when I was younger, my dad putting on a pair of work pants down in our basement to go work on something and there being a wolf spider. He should’ve checked it the same way you’d check a pair of shoes in an environment that could potentially have spiders in it. The wolf spider did bite him and out of surprise, he did swat at what was causing him unexpected pain. But I remember us looking at it under a mounted magnifying lens afterwards and admiring the fangs on that big wolfie. What great hunters they are. Wolf spiders really are cool insects and wonderful hunters. *edit: I know Jack is a big Irwin fan because of how he closes each video with the same message. Steve would do the same thing, and it’s appreciated. At least for me, it’s like a bit of closure or healing for his passing. I’m old enough to remember Steve’s shows and Jack choosing to go after the animals that don’t get the love from us humans that your typical zoo animals get is awesome and reminiscent. Jack’s content is good enough for a tv show on Nat Geo, no cap whatsoever

When I was very young in the late 70's and 80's my brother and I would actively search out for Wolf Spiders in Montana. They use to be EVERYWHERE. We would take a jug of water when we found a burrow and lightly pour water in and they would just shoot right out! We would just sit in awe, never hurting them and just enjoy the coolness of them. Not sure of pouring water in their burrows to get them out was good for them or their burrow but we were like 6-8 yrs old. LOVE these spiders and how they carry all them babies on their backs!

Hello Miguel here, I am a tarantula spider enthusiast and overall arachnid lover. I was born and raised in south Florida and I got the Chance to live In Texas for about 3 years. A month ago I moved back to Florida and I can confirm that everything is bigger in Texas. I found a tigrosa helleus wolf spider and it was around 5 inches in leg span and looked a heck of allot bigger than this carolinensis. This is not the biggest this is just scratching the surface to how incredibly large these beautiful creatures can get.

In Arizona, living out in the boonies with a koi pond between the house and guest house- it was tarantula city. Specially during mating season in September. The Arizona blond is rather large and the females get heavy & large. Perhaps the most affable tarantulas, as they are very docile. If you were gardening and needed to move one that was out of her hole. You just let them walk on your glove. (they are the size of a fully outstretched hand) and move them while you work, then move them back. They ate Bark scorpions which are really nasty scorpions, so they were a pleasure to have around. Stepping out of any door you had Mojave Green, Diamondback & Sidewinder rattlesnakes sunning themselves. They all hung around the koi pond due to the food chain. We finally got LARGE king snakes, which ended the rattle snake problem :) We lived out in the boonies so we could land helicopters at the house … as I did aerial photography for a living all over the US and other countries for many years.

I've definitely seen Wolf Spiders of that size here in Colorado. At least 3 times, over twenty years or so. I actually had one in my shoe! Apparently it had crawled in there to rest, and I put my shoes on to work on the yard. About an hour later I felt something bunched up in my left shoe. I took a break to check it, but figuring it was probably a hairball from one of my cats. It was a 4" left spread Wolfy! She wasn't happy about spending an hour or so with my foot, but she was fine, and got to go back in the woods where she belongs. Just wanted to point out that at no time did she bite. Not even posturing. When she came out of the shoe, I think she was just happy to get oxygen. You should come to Colorado and find one of these giants! They definitely are here, and I think they are bigger than that one in Florida. Love your videos! 😁

Wolf spiders are one of my favorites! I've moved to Florida this past year and haven't seen many but back home in Jersey I'd see many this size if not quite a bit bigger! I lived in the woods there so they were very common around the property and even inside the house in the cooler months. I've had my fair share of bites but they were almost always wrong place wrong time. Even the bigger ones are more inclined to run away, tuck, hide and just get as far from people as possible. Out of the many I've handled, I've never been bitten and they're almost entirely docile when being handled.
@stevepreskitt283 Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you haven't seen more here in Florida. Wolfies are ridiculously common, and you'll also occasionally come across some huntsmans that are several inches across, and the huntsmans have apparently mastered the art of teleportation - it's disturbing that something that big is so fast. I've relocated a couple of wolfies bearing young from our front porch in the last couple of months. It's not a big deal to get adults out of the house, but I'd rather not deal with dozens of tiny ones inside. :-D Their temperament varies IME - most are pretty chill, but I've had a couple of wolfies cop an attitude and rear up almost like a Sydney funnel-web and even run at me on occasion. Fortunately I've never been bitten.

Turned out it was pregnant and all the babies hatched. They’d hang out on her back and I remember thinking how cool it was and what a good mama she was. But that’s all I remember, I don’t know what my brothers did with her or her babies, probably let them go but at the same time I don’t know if they’d all survive if you just let them go in a place with no little den or whatever the mom does at first since the spiderlings are so vulnerable.
