Greg Miller's insight into woodworking transcends the motions of saws, planes, hammers and chisels. His experience as a youth worker, his work with victims of road trauma and acquired brain injury and his deep love for the children of today make this interview worth watching to the last moment.

"Hear the whisper of a sharp hand plane taking a shaving from a nice piece of wood"
The Heritage Woodcraft Centre is home to The Joy of Wood, where Greg Miller and friends bring you the pleasures of traditional woodworking in many different ways, from public workshops to private tuition and more. Come and join us and discover the wisdom of the centuries through your hands and your heart.

I was touched very deeply by this film and am comforted by the thought that I am not alone in knowing that making things by hand is a very special thing and must be preserved. Thank you for your eloquent and heart felt message.

I have been doing the same for the last 3 years at our local high school , the thrill in the kids eyes on completing a project gives me as much pleasure , I have tried to formalise this process but accademia want me to spend 4 years getting a teaching degree I'm 61 my best years have passed when working in west Papua on weekends and evenings I taught wood work , boat building and tool making to local kids who then brought their dads down to learn I loved his inter generational connection

What a fabulous piece. Hats off to you Greg. My upbringing was quite similar to yours and I've treasured every minute. I've never known an unhappy or unbalanced person who could make things with their hands. Never stop what you're doing.

You have summed up why I have fallen for hand tool work. So many times I look at the table saw and by the time I position it, hook up dust collection and put on hearing protection the hand saw is just much faster. I can also hear myself think, so much nicer. Great video.

I went through one of Greg’s courses on spoon carving last year. One of the best learning experiences you can have to spend a day in the workshop with him and other likeminded people. If you’re in Perth don’t hesitate to sign up for a course of some kind with Greg, can’t recommend it enough.

I am happy to see a lot of younger people re-discovering the pleasure of real manpower. As well as the pleasure of creating something from scratch. There is anew found appreciation for the quality of tools made in the past years (pre ww2). There are being put back into service once again. I believe that every so often we re-connect to the essential elements that matter to us the most.

Greg is such an amazing person and being around him and listening to the passion in his voice when he talks about wood is amazing, he gives you a real sense of feeling about the wood and makes you appreciate every little thing you do. And also learning from Greg I found myself using those skills I learnt from Greg in everyday mundane tasks such as washing the dishes, in a way that I would think about if I was sanding a piece of wood in place of a bowl, it just wouldn’t look right if one side was sanded more. You are a huge mentor in so many peoples lives and I think everyone really appreciates the passion you have for your job.

Totally enjoyed listening to you mate, my dad was a chippy, he taught me to sharpen a chisel till it shaved the hairs on your arm, to put needle points on a hand saw etc, so miss working with this man, today I have a great workshop, sadly it is difficult to get my grandkids interested, but my adult daughters grew doing the things you spoke of and I could not be prouder, thanks mate for your time.
