The memory he has of his mother giving him a balloon while he was in hospital and a nurse popping it later on was clearly traumatic for him. If I was a loved one and I heard him say that, I'd be asking more about his experience of being hospitalised so young, and maybe about his relationship with his mother. While I agree it's technically harmless, any type of long-term addiction is always a coping mechanism for some internal struggle. And it would it only serve him well to address that traumatic memory.
