Over the past several decades armies worldwide have seen impressive gains in firepower, mobility, communications, and other fields. Tanks dash across the battlefield, helicopters fly hundreds of miles to deliver supplies and evacuate the wounded, and soldiers can talk in real time with others on the other side of the globe. Virtually every aspect of the soldier’s life has improved, except for the weight.
According to US Defense Today, the U.S. Army will buy 624 of General Dynamics’ Land Systems MUTT (Multi-Utility Tactical Transport) for $162.4 million. The MUTT is an 8x8 unmanned ATV designed to follow soldiers on their route, carrying their gear for them and allowing them to concentrate on the mission. MUTT uses a wireless tethering system that allows the vehicle to track and follow an individual soldier in an infantry squad, trailing him or her like a pack animal. It could even act as a mothership for a flying drone.
