Meet the men who help clean the polluted Passaic River

Frank D'Antonio and Iran Walker are doing their best to help clean a 10 mile stretch of the lower Passaic River. Frank and Iran, you have no idea the impact your cleaning efforts are having on the Passaic and our environment in general. I’ve only discovered the Passaic, through fishing, in 2019. The abundance of fish and wildlife on this river is unreal. It supports healthy populations of bass, perch, pike, and so many others. I regularly see mink, river otters, bald eagles, foxes, you name it! The only way an environment can support this variety of wildlife is if its a healthy ecosystem, and this is happening on the Passaic because of your efforts to clean it. Now every time I leave I take some trash with me. My hats off to you both and many thanks for improving our spot in NJ.

Great job gentlemen…..take great pride in your work. You definitely notice how much the river has cleaned up but there will always be debris especially after a rainfall it’s more noticeable.

in the 70's as a kid used to fish off woodcliff ave in little falls, directly opposite willowbrook mall area; water was, believe it or not, MUCH filthier then. Def some improvements

That river goes all the way to the ocean. It flows to Hackensack, Newark to the ocean.

When are you cleaning up the trash in the Passaic river between Garfield and Passaic?? The net has been filled with trash for months now and the birds can’t even land.

Much of the garbage comes from upstream, not surrounding areas. The upstream Passaic goes through many towns, like Wayne and Oakland, before it seems to empty off the Garfield dam in the tidal waters of the lower Passaic. Because the river floods a lot upstream, it gets more debris, which are carried down into this area. There it does not drain properly into the ocean, and instead seems to go back and forth, trapped as the tide goes in and out.
