Just had my very first game in her while I watched you in the background. Got Kraken, High Cal, Confederate, First blood and 3 Dev strike medals for 2200 base XP in a loss!!!! Couldn’t carry my garbage team hard enough. The next best XP was 748 base lol. This ship is amazing.

I completely disagree - in this case. The ship is, in some ways, an improvement on the Mahan - with not the Benson torpedoes, but the FLETCHER's Tier-7 Torps -- doing a massive 16,000+ damage at Tier-5. This is a tremendous power-up over the Mahan's Mark-12 torpedoes (11,700 damage), as well as having the Benson / Fletcher's 9.2 km range. Literally it's the Tier-7's Torpedo armament, at Tier-5. For this, you give up ONE cannon. That's it. One. Anything you can do in Mahan - for the most part, you should be able to do in Monaghan. You'd still out-gun most other destroyers you come up against (other than perhaps a Mahan or Icarus, but I think you'd probably still overcome an Icarus, if you got the jump on them). Someone suggested (as crazy as it sounds) NOT to put in the usual Halsey, and instead view this as more of a Torp focused / generalist ship, and not the usual enemy DD hunting game the US Destroyers usually go about. To that end, someone I read suggested actually running Dewey ! (lol ?) - with Fire % increase, Look at me Now, Torp Reload perk, and Reaching Out, to extend the gun range a bit. Take Fully Packed as the Legendary skill, and you have 3 Smokes, 3 Speed Boosts, a 7% (max) fire chance with a rapid fire rate (Icarus has 8% and is generally viewed as best firestarting DD at the tier, IIRC - but this would shoot even faster than that, in most cases), and have a firing range nearing 11-km (Mine is 10.7km with only a Level-7 Dewey, I tossed in). My Upgraded / maxed Fletcher only has 11-km gun range, so -- again, this thing compares very favorably to a Tier-7 (at least in that area). Overall, seems totally usable and profitable. My first match I ended up with 67,000 damage, 89 Gun hits, 3 Torp hits, 2 kills, 2 fires, 3 floods, 9 base defenses, a Capture, a Dev Strike, and 316,000 Credits earned. That seems, to me, an excellent result for a Tier-5 premium - and I think Monaghan offers a lot of versatility in playstyle that the Mahan and other limited functionality-torpedo DD's don't have. So - I would not regret your purchase, just yet, to those who got it already ! :-)

And 1 less gun, is a lot of missed hits chances if you fire your guns 50, 60 times in a game. Buy it if you want, but I'll stick with my original opinion, that this ship is a turd.

@@kygunrunner I respect your points -- I'm just saying the Torps are Exactly what the Fletcher has, at Tier-7 -- and nobody ever really complains that the Fletcher is bad because it has those torpedoes. Or, put a different way -- it would be as though you took a single turret away from a Fletcher and then everyone would dump on the ship ? Cause that's (in a sense) how the Monaghan performs -- a 4-gun Fletcher with its Fletcher torps. Hard to look at that and be all that disappointed, is all I'm suggesting.

Fun fact, Spartan: the 4th of the Yamato-class battleships was unofficially named #111. The IJN named the first three after Japanese provinces, but I like to think that the second one, at least, was named after a real-life, undefeated Japanese samurai: Miyamoto Musashi.😁😎

So what do I in particular want from Spartan Elite... Before I become a member? Now I love the video's, I've learned such a lot to the extent that I don't get to go back to port within the first few minutes (unless I'm in that Helena thing that seems to have armour made out of cheesecake judging by the number of times I've been sunk by a broadside from a cruiser) but even that I managed to counter by hiding behind things with armour, such as Destroyers... No, what I really need, bearing in mind at the moment I'm working 150 miles away from home building a nice new warehouse to store all the NHS's PPE in so only really get an evening or so on the Xbox, is some guidance on how to play the stuff I'm really rubbish in. Mainly at the moment Japanese cruisers, that have issues with spread, time to load.. And what I'd really like to see is Spartan old lad... Play some of the stuff you struggle with. Show us how to deal with destroyers with only two cannons and short range torps for example. Strategy if you like. Because not all of us are Tier 6 level just yet. And some of us (me?) are Tier 6 but really shouldn't be yet. ;-)

Yes, Budyonny does get radar, but you have to swap your plane out for it... Tactical tip, if you see a Budyonny (or any of the hi lvl Russian Cruisers) launch a plane, then you know it doesn't have radar equipped...

Well, the thing is I believe WG didn't want an American destroyer to have a high rate of fire and the fast speed of japanese torpedoes, not to mention those torpedoes having a reload below one minute. In other words, to make it less OP at tier 5 against other destroyers of the same tier. For me, the reload time of those torpedoes doesn't seem long at all. During, those reload periods I just go cap bases or hunt down the other enemy destroyers until my torpedoes are replenished.

USN DD line is most likely a no go for me bc of mediocre at best torps. Been branching out from BB's to expand my skill to other classes. Also you're not the only one when it comes starting fires. One minute my Dallas will start fires like a million burning suns then the next. Nope. It's like the deck and superstructure is being rained on....

Spartan are excited for Odin? I am but my biggest fear with that ship is that everyone who gets the campaign can get even people who just got the game and complain to wargaming that it'll need non-stop buffs because they are bad and need to learn and play and not hop directly into a tier VII.

I wish they would add the USS Tennessee. The California is a Tennessee class BB. The Tennessee herself was at Pearl Harbor, and was heavily damaged. Before the war she had torpedoes, but when she was repaired after the Pearl Harbor attack, she was modernized. Her torpedoes were removed, and she got a lot more AA and I think a few more secondaries.

I think most people's problem is that they're comparing it to the Mahan, a gunboat destroyer, when the Monaghan is more of a middle-ground, jack-of-all-trades tin can. Of course it's going to lose a gunfight with a Mahan, because the Mahan is a close-range knifefighting gunboat tailored to that specific role. The Monaghan loses that specification and becomes more of a multirole ship. It's less like a Mahan and more like an Icarus imo

Budyonny does get radar, but most seem to swap it for a plane at tier 5. (And that guy launched a plane, just as you were asking if he had radar 😁). But, I've got to be honest, this DD looks like no fun. Get the t-61 at tier 5. Why would you EVER pick the Monaghan over it???? 🤦‍♂️

Not hating. Why do people use double concealment inspirations on dds? I’m a dd main and for me my concealment aint the be all and end all,there are better use of inspirations imo. All my dds have 6km+ concealment and I come out of vast majority of engagements winning.

I use Sims on German destroyers, for even more HP, as well as Burke, so the guns calm down a bit. I've also been trying Sims as an inspiration for Tanaka, so you have extra HP to survive those close encounters with gunboats...jury's still out on that...

Zapranoth 1968 I use sims as inspirations on all gunboats dds, can go wrong with extra hp. 2nd inspiration for me varies depending on the dd

Musashi took more of a beating and a lot longer to sink. I think the pc version gets a torp reload. I won this in a crate on pc and rarely played it. The Mahan is a lot better for this tier.

Musashi had an upgraded torpedo defense system, if I recall...she took 19 air dropped torpedoes before sinking...Yamato only took 11, but in fairness, they were mostly on the same side...
