In high school, he led his team to a state championship and was one of the top running backs in his class.
But despite record-breaking stats in high school, he received just one Division I offer. Now, after delivering one of the most dominant seasons of any college runningback, doubts about his NFL potential still remain.
So why is Cam Skatteboo still overlooked? And how did he become the most underrated RB in college football?
To understand his journey, we have to go back to where it all began.
Cam Skatteboo grew up in Rio Linda, California, and from an early age, his athleticism stood out. He could walk at just seven months old, and his bowed legs gave him incredible balance. Always full of energy, he had a knack for escaping tight spots-whether it was wriggling out of car seats or never being able to sit still. That restless nature made football the perfect fit, and he decided to play after watching his dad coach and his older brother, Leonard Skattebo, take the field for Bowling Green.
Naturally more competitive than his friends, Skatteboo became a wrecking ball in high school. In one unforgettable play, he broke nearly every tackle on the field to score. By the time his high school career was over, he had put up staggering numbers-3,556 rushing yards, 42 touchdowns, and an eye-popping 11.6 yards per carry. Yet despite his dominance, he was overlooked and underrated, failing to receive a single FBS college football offer.
But instead of letting that discourage him, Skatteboo used it as fuel. He was determined to prove everyone wrong.
So, he committed to local FCS powerhouse Sacramento State.
As a freshman, he had a solid start, but what happened next? No one saw it coming.
By his sophomore season in 2022, Skattebo was ready to take over. He exploded for 1,382 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, while also throwing for a touchdown and even returning an onside kick for a score. His breakout year earned him first-team All-Big Sky honors, Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year, and FCS All-American recognition.
Seemingly out of nowhere, he became the face of Sacramento State football. Many believed he would be the future of the program-but Skattebo had other plans.
