We were making a small independent movie and he played one of the bad guys. He was so warm to everybody in the cast and crew. He was mostly focused on his photography business and his family. He just seemed like a quiet and humble guy overall.

This story deserves to be told about Tony Mandarich. My dad worked for the boys and girls club partnership admin dept. in Green Bay in the 90’s. Part of his job was to fundraise - he secured a meeting with the entire Green Bay packers players and coaching staff. After his pitch asking for tax deductible donations, he gave all the contact and giving information, thanked the packers, and left lambeau field. He almost got to his car in the parking lot when he heard, “Hey, Terry! Terry! Wait up!” It was Tony Mandarich. He handed a sealed envelope filled with cash to my dad and said, “Please make sure this gets to the kids.” My dad never opened it but he said it looked like it was easily between 5 and 10 grand somewhere in there. He tried to give Mr. Mandarich the proper receipt in order for him to receive his tax deduction. Tony just said no thanks Terry, I have to get back to the meetings! And ran off back into the stadium. Nobody ever contacted my dad to donate any money to the boys and girls club, only Tony Mandarich. My dad made sure it went to the kids.

He’s a good soul and his life has had meaning for many. I never knew this side of him and reading this has lifted me out of a bad day otherwise and made me grateful for all I have. When ESPN did that special on him a few years back, he was incredibly open about his struggles. It's really a cautionary tale about addiction. I remember him at one point saying something along the lines that one of his relatives or friends had cancer (or some other terrible disease) and Tony was so addicted to pain medication that he actually wished he could get cancer so that he'd be able to have the pain pills. It was great that he was able to get back into the NFL and have a few productive years.

I can attest to that. I was addicted to painkillers and had a friend whose wife had cancer. I would actually think she's lucky because she can get all the pain meds she wants. Mandarich’s recovery from opiates and alcohol is absolutely remarkable, bordering on a miracle. I can tell a lot of the commenters just don’t get it. (And instead focus on the glory he had once enjoyed.) It just doesn’t work like that. He has saved his life and beaten a devil. His second career (Colts rebirth) is in and of itself an achievement any pro would be grateful for. (And fans and family would be proud of.) Great piece. You present the best stories. This just proves how football especially isn't just about strength and power but also about skill and technique. He relied on his size, strength, and probably intimidation in college so he paid little attention to the fundamentals of being a good OL which got exposed in the pros Then being off the roids took away his false confidence so he was basically toast. Please allow me to clear this up, 1991 I believe Ron Wolf enters the fray as GM, during his previous post as Jets GM Mr. Wolf coveted Favre in the 1990 draft and was unable to attain him. By 1991 he was GM in Green Bay and rolled all the dice, and traded a first round pick for Favre, who was drafted in the second round. This man was willing to risk his career day one on Favre, logic would assume this love and madness for 4 would not have subsided had Sanders been present. P.S. To this day I wonder if the Wolf character in Pulp Fiction was based on Mr. Wolf, both had dangling brass ones

I remembered other factors about Tony's downfall. Unlike today's contract structure, hyped players like Tony Mandarich would sit out and not report to camp until a big lucrative contract was ironed out first. It's often mentioned that when athlete's get paid big money first, their performance may take a nosedive, and unfortunately that's what happened to Tony as well as other athletes demanding to get paid huge money up front instead of earning it. That may not be Tony's fault completely due to at that time of how much money good or even potential offensive linemen would earn. The other factor was that Tony's agent would threaten Green Bay Packers management that if the right amount of money was not offered to him, he would hold out and consider boxing a prime Iron Mike Tyson at that time. I remembered the hype around Tony before he even showed up to Packers' camp. I think Brian Bozworth entered the NFL with similar hype too before he even showed up for Seattle Seahawks playing camp.

Drafting isn't a perfect science. Most of your success in the NFL comes from how hard YOU CHOOSE to study and work on the MENTAL game. In college you can win with pure freakish athleticism and strength. In the NFL everyone is an athletic freak so what really differentiates you is how hard you're willing to study and work on technique, create spread sheets on your opponents moves before every game and study them an hour in the morning on game day, going the extra mile. That's what makes an NFL star compared to a college star.. and these are millionaires who could choose to do literally anything else in the world - but will they still spend their time practicing their craft? Or will they spend it in clubs and doing adolescent type shit.
