Party Prison: The villains and murderers banged up in a South American Benidorm

Latin American jails are usually dark places. But San Antonio Prison in Venezuela could be mistaken for a holiday resort, with its swimming pool, food stalls and overnight accommodation for guests.
"This is a surreal paradise. They are safer here than anywhere else in the city", says psychologist Karina Hum. It's so good that many don't want to leave. But behind the dance parties and families having fun in the sunshine, the world of drugs, guns and violence is still evident. The man in charge is El Conejo, a powerful and famous jailed gangster. "The government here does not control anything at all", says Carlos Nieto Palma, who runs a non-government organisation that monitors the prisons. Recognising the authority of criminals solves a big problem in the prison system, but it also means turning a blind eye to what criminals do best. "We are promoting a penitentiary revolution", says Prisons Minister Iris Varela.

i do not know but what i am saying is that this process soften criminals instead of harden criminal...so i can see how this can help society compare to our regular prison systems that make even petty criminals unable to fit back into normal society because of how they have to desensitize their feeling toward fellow men to survive in our brutal prison-and bare in mind if you do not know as brutal as prison is men go their everyday...i think it could work

We would look out for each other more, because we would all be a part of a society. Now it's mostly everyone out for themselves. Depressing.

@wishiwassleeping2829
@wishiwassleeping2829 6 жыл бұрын
@conacal rubdur I'm an American and gotta say, we definitely own a part of this. The US government has been waging an economic war against Venezuela for a long time and it has had crippling affects on their ability to effectively govern. The times they have tried to take back control of the prison system the US starts screaming about human rights violations. Our foreign policy is driven by the military industrial complex and has many unforseen consequences.
@wishiwassleeping2829
@wishiwassleeping2829 6 жыл бұрын
@conacal rubdur the US government would like to see a regime change in Venezuela. By creating unfavorable economic situations the US government was hoping the people of Venezuela would get rid of the government on their own. The military industrial complex means that when war becomes profitable people always want to go to war. Defense contractors get rich when we go to war, so they are eager for conflict with Venezuela.

Criminal life is actually a fulfilling life as long as you don't f*ck up. Selling drugs you'll get more money then you ever imagined. Getting 60k a year working hard ? Selling drugs you can get that in a month or two. You don't need to be someone special to make good money like everyday life. You do good, you'll move up. Unlike the work force where you'll most likely be screwed over year after year waiting for what you deserve as your boss buys a new house and cars. People hate the criminal world, but they reward you when you are good at it.

+ylekiote99999 Idk, I definitely think violent crimes warrant serious punishment and justice, but for non-violent crimes this might be a good model. In Hawaii they have prisons that are basically farms and huts with fencing, and the prisoners even grow their own food, learn a work ethic and the reward of getting a return for their efforts. Granted meth is now rampant there, but I am interested in a more effective means of criminal reform.

Venezuela Government should see the wisdom to have death penalty law (like Singapore) & to severely restrict guns. It is ironic, ridiculous & highly embarrassing that Venezuela is underdeveloped & poor & suffers recession in spite of being a major oil producing country & no typhoons. Venezuela should have same high standard of living of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar & Saudi Arabia.

+Kofukufufu Just to clarify, Singapore has very low crime rate (the 2nd safest city in the world according to www.businessinsider.sg/the-20-safest-cities-in-the-world-2015-1/#.Vw1Lr2R95dg) and sex trade and child trafficking is definitely not a big issue in singapore. In addition, i will say that Singapore prison do treat prisoners with dignity. The prisoners undergo training and education and there are even programs to help the prisoners find job and adapt to the society when they are released. Singapore is not a typical southeast asia country :)

I'd love to see some statistics on this prison. Like what's the recidivism rate, and how does the expenses compare to other more traditional prisons in the country. This definitely doesn't seem like something I'd like to see here in the US but our prison system needs a complete and total reshaping. Here in the United States if you go to prison for any length of time it follows you for the rest of your life. Giving up your freedom temporarily is supposed to pay your debt to society. But if you're a felon here in America your debt is never fully paid. Once you have a prison record your job opportunities are extremely limited. You can lose your right to vote. To lease or rent an apartment you have to pass a criminal background check so it's hard to find housing. Since you can't find work normally you'd qualify for temporary housing assistance from the government but your status as a felon means you no longer qualify for housing assistance or food assistance. If you want to further your education your felon status blocks you from getting a subsidized student loan, and some colleges will not admit you anyway. And even when you're released from prison, most of the time there's a lengthy probation period which comes with a lot of fines and fee you must pay every month. And your assigned probation officer can send you back to prison for any little infraction like getting a speeding ticket, or hanging out with someone who has a prison record. All of this makes it almost impossible to reenter society and become a productive law abiding citizen no matter how hard you try. That's why most prisoners here end up back in prison. You can get caught with a small amount of marijuana at 17 and that one mistake can ruin the rest of your life. That's why we have the largest prison population in the developed world. And most of them are African American males like me. Thank God I grew up in a two parent household in a wealthy suburban neighborhood so I'm one of the lucky ones. It's really hard to get white Americans to care about prisoners and get them involved in criminal justice reform because their relationship with law enforcement and our legal system is a whole lot different than the relationship African Americans have with law enforcement. I think that's starting to change some but it's hard to quantify at this point. Maybe it's conditioning or brain chemistry but it seems like empathy is a lot harder to come by when empathy is needed between people of a different race.

whobad I don't want my tax dollars funding what are essentially torture complexes that do nothing to fix the underlying problem. We need to rehabilitate, not break people. This way they won't just go back out and commit the same crimes or worse. Our current system puts more innocent people in danger by increasing recidivism.
@nickjamesbitch2
@nickjamesbitch2 9 жыл бұрын
whobad this is a little too free in my opinion but the US system is much worse. In the scnadinavian countries they have a similar program with not quite as much freedom and have over 90% of their prisoners, even murderers, never return to prison whereas in the US over 80% do... and that includes non-violent offenders. this video is an example of rehabilitation where in the US we essentially force people to join a gang or get raped by sending them to prison, and we also have the highest incarceration rate in the free world, only closely behind north korea if that doesn't set your freedom alerts off then idk what will... the US legal system strips away the most basic and Constitutional rights of our citizens. The foundation of our country and our freedom is at the mercy of police unions and private prisons.

This would have been better if they minus the booze, regulate the sleep overs and have classes to educate them for qualification when they get out and a proper schedule timetable for their allowances. Its a good idea to try and turn these criminals away from crime by changing their mindset to minimise abuse but I don't think the system was well planned and approved appropriately. I see a lot of benefits for they way this prison is run but there is a lot that needs to be tidied up. Risk your life to save a life rather than to make life worse and threatened in the future?

I don't think that should be the point of prisons...

DynamicSphinxxx FIrst thing we as people need to realize is that we are mentally and physically fucked up brain damaged enslaved idiots that are way worse than animals. The most basic thinking and acting is wrong. When we realize that, then maybe we might relize what prisons are for and they should be for. I mean, in my opinion there should be no prisons, no matter who you are and what you do I don't think there should be any official rights or laws that approve of bad stuff. I kill someone, I am a murderer, the system gives me death penalty. But the system is looked at as justice, right doing and people don't understand there is no difference. Actually there is, the murderer usually is on drugs, mentally ill, badly risen in a poor and non empathic enviroment etc... While the system is very sober, taking months and years to do you harm and make you suffer, I see that as way more evil than a crazy guy on drugs killing someone. EVERYTHING IS WRONG. Tell me when do people act according to what they think it's right? 99 percent of all the conversations and dialoques are about immediate reaction of your predefined brain to certain aspects. most people are egoistic and if anything touches their ego, they react accordingly. If they would feel you have more arguments, they would react accordingly etc... And this reacting accordingly means acting exactly like animals, doing without thinking, reacting without thinking. Just like animals but at least you can predict an animal and they are not deceiving, lying and cunning while people are fucking evil bastards willing to suck the life out of their parents for just a little gain, happy new year by the way...

Before you criticize the manner in which this jail is run, reflect on the number of Americans that die in our jail systems through guard abuse neglect and by fellow prisoners. Prison or incarceration means loss of liberty; people are locked up in a facility for a certain duration of time. That is their punishment. The punishment should not include abuses from guards or fellow inmates. You may not agree with Venezuela's prisons but in contrast to American prisons they make a hell of a lot more sense. Allowing conjugal visits reduces sexual abuse by fellow inmates. Treating people like normal individuals, allowing them visits, to cook and even the use of a pool and music reduces stress and makes it easier for guards. I don't agree with having open bars, serving liquor but all in all their system is far less expensive to run than ours and far more humane. If our prison systems were more civilized than those coming out of prison might not be the hardened criminals our systems produce.

they had to do this guys. gangs had guns and grenades in the prison before. real life talk research it on youtube. bringing kids in the prison family does keep the violence down. at least they did something, they are trying. what is America doing???

Those U.S jails are downright evil.....I'm not defending the criminals but when you treat the criminals like animals you become a criminal yourself.

America prison breed more prisoners and it is big business.This jail really rehab because these prisoners live like when there are free or better,so when their come out in the world it would not be difficult for them to ajust to the society or their community..
