I just got a 2002 Isuzu Trooper LS in showroom condition with 60K miles, like out of a time machine.. Flew to Kansas City and drove it home to San Franciso. Stoked.

Awesome vehicle- I drove a 1990 for 12 years and took it from 145K to 245K. As far as I know, it's still driving around Oahu, where I sold it. (I now drive a 2002 Montero.) The 1990 got a new transmission at 185K and a head gasket, valve job and alternator at around 205K. These aren't minor things but they are to be expected. It had no other problems at all. Built super heavy duty and was awesome in the snow. Multiple trips across country and it sat in storage for a few years and emerged still running like a top. FYI, the bull bars on it are from the factory. Looks like they just need to be straightened out. Looking forward to following this!

I remember these rigs well... it was 1995 and wife and I just started our family. It was between the Montero, Trooper, and Cherokee... the XJ won and had that rig until 2004. I’ll be following this series fer sure!

We have Two 90 Gen 1's now- the longer you own them, the more you'll like them. Before you go switching out a lot of front end parts- check your gear box. The OEM parts are *stout* (both mine over 200K and all original Front Ends), but the gearbox is the weak point. Popular upgrade is to put a later box in it. Check the Mitsubishi Monteros USA group on FB. Love your rig.

Why am I just stumbling upon this video? This hits a soft spot, my very first vehicle was a 1989 Montero LS, and boy did I love it. It's sadly rusting out at my parents house, because I keep telling myself someday I'll bring it back to life.

OMG I am so happy to see someone else loving a montero ( old style) I have one 1990 although I prefer automatic and dont do off road except when i was younger we did camping in off road locations and i was selling real estate in the snow, OK so I dont know where you are located maybe you dont get snow- but this thing loves the cold and snow is no problem at all driving my montero- problem is I have been driving it since 1990 wanting to finally get a more modern interior vehicle ( I have been looking for 10 yrs) I cant find anything that is made from metal and has a metal bumper & side opening back door I am abt 5 ft 1 inch tall and on the wrong slope I cant reach a hatch style to close it. I looked at hummer- I cant see over the hood - I have sat in every style suv and none make me as happy as my montero, it needs work and has had work over the years I love it ( Ignatius ) Ign8tus was the planned vanity plate - anyway - I just dont know what to do ? should I give up on the modern luxuries and keep it putting another 3k into it to make sure everything is in safe amazing condition ? 31 yr old chassis - something might be brittle? drive shaft ? I never would have thought of things like this when i was younger maybe i am getting old? i want a safe sturdy vehicle with no mechanical issues pending -

@@TheHooniverse too bad i dont have a mechanical person like you in my area to put it back together and make it safe... I do love it- but 30 yr old vehicle on mountain roads and freeways ? lately just go about 6 miles to and from the store because it is running so rough- in park & neutral rpms go up then down up and down - maybe a vacuum issue already replaced one sensor nothing changed the next one is more expensive. have to put $250 insurance deductible on it because tree limbs got the windshield and back door so now need those repaired... waah and then there is the matter of the heater switch- started arc smoking so had to pull the fuse - dressing like an Eskimo to go anywhere.

Too bad they are great riggs, I have a stick 4dr v6 like his and an auti like yours and 2 2doors 4cyl stick which are even more amazing and can climb a mountain with no sweat (hunting & snow riggs), anyways there is a great Montero group on Instagram (#monteromafia) and some even build parts and know where to get parts and always have some great tips on where to find hard stuff and about repairs, love mine, plus have 3 parts rigs 4dr & looking for 2dr parts rigs. Try to get it fixed, I am your height and have found all the newer SUVs are so disappointing in their construction and toughness I actually sold my Mercury Mountaineer (Explorer) to buy my daily driver (4dr,auto,v6 +factory limo sunroof😍 which I love). Good luck and hope you hang on to it.

My friends parents gave her this exact same color Montero in college, it had a manual as well. So many lovely memories of road trips with that thing. She still has it, although it’s been off the road for years due to failed headgaskets. Cool find! What’s something like that worth these days?

I had a brown 91 way back in the mid 90s. Loved the safari looks... and functionality. I drove it daily and kept my vette in the garage. Head gasket problems for sure but who doesn’t “love the smell of antifreeze in the morning!”

Awesome, I got 2, a SWB 4cyl M/T with 500k miles and the LWB V6 A/T with 310k miles. Off road? AMAZING. You have the original bouncy seat and headlight washers so look for the orange sticker on the door jam meaning that you also have the LSD (limited slip differential) suspension is unbreakable. Wish I can share pics.

My buddy had a Pajero while we were stationed in Japan. Awesomely capable vehicle and a lot of fun to adventure in. On the nickname note, our LeMons team has always been about keeping it simple and reflecting the original name. Most recently our Dodge Caravan was Cara, and our Plymouth Scamp was Mouthy. I think something like that using the letters already in the name (simple ex Monte or Metro etc). Don’t use those they’re terrible but just to give you an idea.

I bought one too. 1990 Montero 4x4 automatic It’s blue. Love it. My trucks name is Brumby cause it drives like a wild horse. Some name ideas: Monty Bear, Tiger , grizzly. My truck growls when I slow down to stop. It’s cool. Going to make a camp truck out of the back. My son is getting his 2003 rally art Montero a new engine. We only drive Mitsubishi’s for years.

Cool rig man! I just picked up a 1990 base model. I've got the 5spd manual, V6, 4x4- but not even a factory rear windshield wiper! Really odd. I wish I had the inclinometer/oil pressure gauges....do you know if I could "add" that on to mine somehow?

I have a 87 one of these called the Pajero here in UK. Has so much going for it! You mentioned breifly how to sort the sloppy steering, is it just the pitman arm or any other parts too? Cheers.

Just bought a 91 Montero for $1500. Rusted but working. Anyone know of good websites to get parts or ideas how to spruce up? Suspension is really soft, probably needs a new fuel pump, eventually a clutch, etc

Mitsubishi won Stock class Paris Dakar. 12 times. Very beyond Toyota or Landover in durability in 3 Rd world. Ie my 03 Montero has a 9 1/2" rear pinon air locker n 4.90 ratio.

I imagine LEDs would look too pimpy/riced out on a nice under-the-radar rig like this one... unless you had a set of properly warm-coloured ones. Also, where is your red G-Shock?? ;)

There isn't a one-stop shop. You need to source from a bunch of places or find a local shop that knows how to work on them. There is a great group for Montero stuff on Facebook though, and everyone in there seems good to help with parts and repair questions.

@@TheHooniverse So no company caters to these ? Only mods I want to make is remover the rear sway bar, rear locker and soft shocks maybe, the rest just minor or replacement type stuff. Yeah I need to find a group to join but I don't have FB.. I am on Pirate 4X4.. Thanks and can't wait to see more on yours. You did convince me it looks better without the brush guard, I will remove mine asap.
