Hi! Biology student here. I love that you made a video on the Horseshoe Crabs, I love this little weirdos. I just wanted to clarify a thing. We do know what Horseshoe Crabs are! They are not Arachnids, but are very closely related to them. They all belong to the subfilum Quelicerata, which belongs to the Arthropoda filum. Horseshoe Crabs belong to a group of their own inside the Quelicerates, called Merostomata. They are the only surviving creatures of this group as far as we know. Their other Merostomata relatives were the Eurypterids, those giant sea scorpions from the Paleozoic. Their closest living relatives are the Arachnids (spiders, scorpions, and the like) and Picnogonids (sea spiders, esencially).

There is often a lot of debate surrounding the exact placement of species, and the evidence is not always crystal clear. Genetically, they might seem to be more closely related to one thing, but then their anatomy might seem much closer to something else. And if, for example, all of its closest relatives are extinct (making it the only living example of its classification), it is difficult to say for sure where it should fit in relation to living species.

Printer ink is the most artificially expensive liquid. If you can "refill" those little 20ml tanks, ( are they that big? ) you can buy 4L tanks for about 10-20 times the price. That is, for example, (made up prices, I don't have a price list) 20ml for $50 ( $2500/L ) or 4L for about $500-$1000 ( $125/L-$250/L ).

I caught a horseshoe crab while fishing off a pier in Cedar Key, Florida as a kid. The man who owned or managed the motel we were staying at turned them into clocks to sell to tourists and he promised me $14 if I would keep it until he got back with a bucket. I put my foot on it to keep it from escaping, but it kept lifting it's tail up and it reminded me of the stingrays I'd seen on a documentary so, terrified I would be stung and die, I lifted my foot and it scooted off the pier and got away. Back then, $14 was a pretty big amount of money for a first grader. Looking back, I'm glad he got away. Living creatures shouldn't be killed to make clocks. I didn't understand that at the time. I grew up in Vineland, New Jersey and every year the beaches around us are flooded with mating/migrating horseshoe crabs. They're fascinating creatures but also a major pain in the ass if you're a fishermen lol. They love to eat your bait and then just sit on top of it, so it feels like there's a fish on the other end.. until you start reeling in and discover it's actually just dead weight you're bringing in. Then you're greeted by that little tail breaking above the water and you know the mistake you've just made lol. They're heavy - especially when you've got a mating couple on together, they snap your line a lot - and if you do manage to get them onto shore successfully it's a nightmare to get them untangled and de-hooked. Cool little creatures though, my Grandmom would take us to the beaches when we were younger to help turn over and return to the water the crabs who'd flipped over on shore

I have kept a small horseshoe crab when I had a marine aquarium. It was there to eat the pink ragworms you can get. Three little facts: 1) They cast their shells at intervals. 2) A young one can run quite quickly on land. 3) They have eyelids.

Thanks Mr Lomas, as always I learn at least one new piece of information (if not more) on every video in your channel. With sincerest respect for all teachers, I sincerely wish that EVERY TEACHER would make a conscientious effort to teach their specific subject the way you do; with such palpable enthusiasm as a story teller of sorts, taking their students on a virtual adventure. All with a bit of mystery that will draw the student's unwavering attention until the very end, then revealing the mystery at the end .. Then at the end the teacher would say with sincere gratitude thanks for sharing the journey with me and listening .. ADDITIONALLY I've unfortunately discovered another reason to be upset with the PHARMA INDUSTRY, this is absolutely unexcusable. Especially if there's another method that doesn't require the continual sacrifice of such an ancient, amazing, inoffensive & defenseless creature; this is just unacceptable.

I have taken part in a few horseshoe crab conservation escapades. They are numerous in South Jersey, particularly Delaware Bay. They come ashore to breed and many run into literal obstacles returning to the water. People simply help them get back to the sea.

@@dogarualexandru-stefan Where the horseshoe crabs spawn is not exactly a deep, dark secret. The phenomenon is not exactly a subtle one. And the biggest issue has been locals bulldozing the entire mob of crabs as part of "beach cleaning". That, fortunately, is at least mostly a thing of the past.

A few days later, there was a horrible lightning storm and the next day, the beach at Indian River inlet was covered with dead horseshoe crabs and there were several trucks running up and down the beach collecting them. I'm not sure how long their blood is still viable, but it was crazy to watch.

I live only 3 miles from the Delaware Bay where we see thousands of them every year. We walk the beaches to right them all the time because they get turned over easily. I take pictures of the "art" that they make in the sand. We even have a horseshoe crab festival in my town (Milton, DE, USA). I haven't watched your entire video yet, but they're not crabs, they're related to spiders. Awesome place to learn about them: Dupont Nature Center, Milford, DE.

About every five to eight years the Horseshoe crab arrives on the waterways, beaches usually out-of-the-way places ,I see them at my favorite clam digging place People have been digging up clams in this place for millions of years. For some reason they are bigger there and only a couple of us know this place Also the blue waves arrive about every 10 years at this same place they say it's a glow in the dark little baby krill so small you cannot see them without reading glasses each touch makes them glow it is really beautiful with a full moon for some reason the sharks who come to the shallows to eat at night don't eat when the sea glows I guess the blue chemical tastes bad. Ill tell you what. My wife likes the blue waves and she said they're very romantic and that's always good for us right because if your like me I am always putting my foot into my mouth and I need all the help I can get!

The best skill of this creatures u forgot completly to tell. They showed in a documentary how they deal with heavy injuries and even amputated organs or body parts. They heal until they are completly recovered! They literally cut nearly the half from one of this animals apart and after 1 and a half year, it was complete like before! Just if the central spine is damaged too much or if too much of the body or blood is missing they die. They can even recover if nearly 60% of their body is missing (shell, legs, and also some organs. But in most cases they are an easy prey for everyone if they are injured too much, cant swimm good enough and get washed at land, where they even more unsave. Have a nice time and let them live a peacefull life, by boykotting those methods from pharmacy

Storytime: I found a dead horseshoe crab in the wharf outside the Charleston Aquarium. I had the smooth brain idea that I would take it back to the hotel room and clean it all up to keep as a souvenir. Turns out, dead animals really smell to high heaven! It stunk up the trolley to the parking garage, it stunk up the car, and it stunk up the bathtub. I had to throw the carcasse back into the water somewhere. The morale of this story, kids, is don't take home dead animals. (Unless you're a biologist or taxidermist.)

Long may they, indeed, live. Trouble is, Big pharma don't give a sh1t about the well beings of nature. All they see are dollars signs, profit margins and many greedy people lining their stinky pants with cash covered, in this case, in blue blood. Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish has been caught, only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.
