In June 2023 I went to Amsterdam to find out what is happening in the marine industry with electrification. I met many very smart people, and had a lot of enlightening conversations. It is very exciting what is happening in the industry right now, as it feels we are on a wave towards alternative propulsion systems. Is it possible to automate/regulate the trust electronically to improve performance and efficiency in waves and currents ? Just set the desired speed of the vessel and let the system chose the optimal trust and reves.

Permanent magnets have a number of issues they rely on rare Earth metals and those magnets can loose magnetism if heated or subject to vibrations. The supply of the magnetic elements will become an increasing problem as demand increases. However their is an answer and that is to use advanced electro magnets where only steel and Aluminium is required to produce powerful magnetic fields and regenerate they don’t even require copper windings a factor that reduces wt. cost and the global need for Cu already in a supply critical situation. Incidentally these non permanent magnet motors are also easier to recycle. Another UK company has pioneered this type of motor technology AEM Advanced Electrical Machines. They started out on heavy commercial vehicles but they were developed as a spin off from research at Newcastle University … there’s also MOLABO from Germany till recently these motors lagged behind till researchers developed the controllers and software to manage the powerful electrical fields in an efficient and smooth manner. Those problems have largely been resolved enabling efficiency and power to be achieved for even the most sophisticated vehicles. 🧙‍♂️Clive

As someone who has spent his whole life on the water, electricity and water are not very compatible, there are always electrical problems and battery problems, Diesel motors well looked after run for 50 years plus. These people are kidding themselves.

And for longer than that boats and ships have been happily using hybrid electric diesel systems ..plus the whole technology has moved on over the past decade thanks to the need to power cars and trucks.. The other thing you ignore is the fact that increasingly diesel engines are managed and run by electrical systems in order that they can meet the performance requirements and pollution control standards globally.
